W&W Game.xls (797 KB) (Solve captcha above to download.)
Holding a large gathering where you want to play Wits & Wagers? Well, here is a spreadsheet for running the game for large teams on a projection screen. Supports play for 3 to 7 teams.

You will need Excel 2003 or later, a projector and the Wits & Wager game. The user can enter Questions from the game or customize them for the group, but is really meant for the latter. The spreadsheet includes Questions for several themes, but you can easily add your own.

Instructions are provided in the spreadsheet, but if you have questions or suggestions for improvement, please let me know.

Notes and disclaimers:
1. This spreadsheet is intended to be used in conjunction with the awesome Wits & Wager board game by North Star Games and a projector to support large group play. The pens and dry erase cards are needed for play (or can be replaced with pen and paper/large dry erase board).
2. The resolution of the projector should be set to 1,024 by 768 pixels. Higher resolutions work too, but you will need to set the Zoom (View-Zoom) to an appropriate level so that you can still see the red rectangle around this page. You will need to do the same Zoom value for each page.
3. You may not use this program in conjunction with any event that charges an admission fee without first getting permission from North Star Games. Please contact Dominic Crapuchettes at 301-493-4331 or dominic@northstargames.com. This includes raising money for a charity (although permission will surely be granted).
4. Many thanks to North Star Games for making such a great game and allowing the use of the Wits & Wagers questions and concepts for this spreadsheet!
5. This spreadsheet is version 1.2, created by Bruce Bridges and uploaded on 3/14/08.
6. This version fixed a bug where scores were not updating for certain question sets with fewer than 5 players. Also, betting rules were updated.

W&W Game with macros.xls (804 KB) (Solve captcha above to download.)
This file is exactly the same as the W&W Game.xls file except it has one macro installed which resets the game after a game has been finished. There are two versions since some people may be leery of using a spreadsheet incorporating macros. You will be able to use the reset feature only if you enable macros in Excel.

Instructions are provided in the spreadsheet, but if you have questions or suggestions for improvement, please let me know.

This is awesome but I would like to pre-create my own question groups. How would one go about doing that? I don't want to have to create them right when everyone is wanting to play.

Also it was a little confusing that I had to select/create my questions and then click RULES to go to the next step.

Thank you for your comments and questions about this file.

You can pre-create your own question sets, but they will have to be saved in different Excel spreadsheets. I would create one set of questions and save the file under one name. Then do the same thing for another set of questions, save the file under a different name, etc. If I can remember the password that is protecting the file, I would give it to you so that you could add a whole series of questions, but I have not used it in over two years that I forgot. I'll try to play around later to see if I can remember it.

I can see how clicking Rules can be confusing. I probably could have used the word Next instead. If I can remember the Excel password, I will update the file changing everything to Next.

No worries.

I found a little VB code that hacked the password although it didn't tell me what it WAS.

I see where you put that in and where to select from etc. Least I can do is rewrite the existing questions

Not a big deal about the "Rules" thing. People on here can see that when they go to download the file now

Thank you for the awesome file. I think using this is cool and very simple to do. Sure it takes a little longer but it's still very quick.

What an excellent little sheet :-)

I have a gathering with 20 of us in a few weeks, and this will help me manage the scores even without a projector... with a projector, even better :-)

As thegreatcerebral said, it's a shame it's protected, as one of the best things about this is that I can create my own questions in place of the ones you have there already, but to do that, you need to unprotect one of the sheets.

Fortunately, his tip that there was a macro that could break the password led me to search the internet for one, and I too managed to break it, so I now have your file with a whole choice of sets of my own questions to pick from which is excellent :-)

For others to be saved the trials of doing the same, the macro I used said that 'a useable password' was:

AAAABABAB<

I'd be surprised if that was the one you used, but certainly it did seem to work when I tried it to unlock the other sheets, so for whatever reason, it worked for me and may well work for others. I'm assuming you don't mind me posting that info, since you say above that you'd have provided it yourself if you'd not forgotten the password.

-----

One other point is that in the rules I got with the actual game when I later bought it, it mentions about being able to lay extra poker chips along with your bet in order to win more. As far as I could tell, your program didn't include functionality for this. In the end I was able to add a column for 'extra bets score' and add them into the total so this worked well enough; I just had to work out the extras myself as wasn't smart enough to get it to work more automatically like the other bets. But if you're considering ever doing a second version then that might be worth looking at (unless it already does that and I've just missed a trick somewhere).

Anyway, this was useful enough to me that I went and bought the game straight afterwards to go with it ;-)

Thanks :-)

Yeah I'd love to have this updated for the new edition. I'd seriously run this like gangbusters.

This is great. But I would like to run it where the groups get to choose their own wager. Exactly like the real game. Any interest in updating the spreadsheet to support that? I'm not an Excel guru.

I was going to try to add the wagers to the spreadsheet myself, but then I ran into the password issue that I see was discussed above. For those who were able to break it, can you please upload a new version that is not protected? Thanks!

Edit: Never mind. I see it's easy to Bingle, such as here.
