Twilight Struggle Game Engine v4.9.1

IMPORTANT! This version of the spreadsheet has been tested and certified to run under both the 32-bit and 64-bit editions of Excel 2010

WARNING! The spreadsheet and game log can NOT be added to a compressed file if the spreadsheet and game log are located on a compressed drive. Please ensure the spreadsheet and game log are stored/saved on an *uncompressed* drive if you intend to automate the sending of the spreadsheet and game log as an e-mail attachment.

Description: The Twilight Struggle Game Engine allows players to engage in a complete game of Twilight Struggle using PBEM (Play By E-mail), or ACTS (Automated Card Tracking System; http://acts.warhorsesim.com) or to track the progress of a sit-down game. The spreadsheet supports Excel 2003 or greater and also integrates with Microsoft Outlook (i.e. not Outlook Express) to automate the sending of the spreadsheet by e-mail.

Note: Thanks to Brandon A (bamancio) for pointing out that the spreadsheet can be shared using Dropbox ( http://www.dropbox.com/) and, therefore, it isn't necessary to e-mail the files using this scenario.

Changes (v4.9.1):

- added prompt, when a Card is played for Ops, to select type of Operations which shows Ops modifiers and automatically fills in the OPS type on the Played Cards worksheet
- added E-mail Options form to configure settings related to sending the spreadsheet; therefore, no more prompting (if configured) when closing the spreadsheet
- updated Regional tab for the Summary form that indicates how many times each Scoring Card has been played and which Scoring Cards are available for play
- fixed some bugs and made some cosmetic changes (both of which I didn't bother to note).

If you have any questions, encounter any issues or would like to provide feedback, don't hesitate to contact me. Enjoy!

Twilight Struggle Game Engine v4.9

As a result, I've added a prompt, when exiting the spreadsheet, to send an e-mail with the game log entries of the last round *if* a player indicates they don't want to compress the files for sending by e-mail and Outlook is detected.

This update incorporates both Card histories, as included in the Twilight Struggle Rules (permission provided by GMT Games), and strategy tips for gameplay, based on Philip Thomas' postings on BGG (permission provided by Philip Thomas), when using Card Management. In addition, I've incorporated a registration form that'll allow me to assess the scope of usage of the spreadsheet and determine the possibility of introducing a web-based matchmaking service in the future. Also, I've introduced a form to allow players to send inquiries from within the spreadsheet (Microsoft Outlook required). Lastly, it includes further enhancements, fixes, etc. as indicated:

Changes (v4.9):

- added spreadsheet name to e-mail subject line for sorting incoming e-mail using rules (i.e. when playing multiple games)
- added code to address *most* scenarios whilst playing the Grain Sales to Soviets card
- added code to address *most* scenarios whilst playing the Star Wars card
- added pop-up form with Card history and strategy tips when clicking the Card Name in the player's Card Hand
- added welcome form with optional e-mail subscription (outlook required)
- added Help tab to About form for inquiries (outlook required)
- added indication if Microsoft Outlook is "enabled" (i.e. available) on the Mapboard worksheet
- added checkbox to disable quotations at startup
- added checkbox to remember Full screen setting at startup
- added prompt to send e-mail with game log entries for the last round *if* Outlook is detected and player doesn't compress files for sending by e-mail (i.e. e-mail capability with Dropbox)
- added HL button to Played Cards worksheet in order to play Headline Card without needing to access the Card Hand
- added new formating to Regional score boxes on the Mapboard worksheet
- added summary "bar" on right side of Mapboard for ease of reference
- added Card Hand button to Played Cards worksheet
- added error logging when saving and compressing the spreadsheet and game log
- fixed Space Race / Cards section to show proper Ops value required to perform Space Race attempts and Quagmire / Bear Trap based on Ops modifier
- fixed "One Small Step ..." to properly detect if US is behind in the Space Race
- fixed issue re: select cards with Event message pop-up when played as Operations
- fixed issue re: possibility of selecting additional Headline Cards
- fixed issue re: die not rolling for Quagmire/Bear Trap
- removed Deal Cards checkbox in order to facilitate fair play
- reorganized, reworded and simplified Instructions worksheet

A great big thanks to Ron Gregory (Ron G) for the excellent idea of incorporating Philip Thomas' strategy tips into the Card Hand. Also, thanks to Brandon A (bamancio) for his detailed and helpful suggestions and code recommendations. And, as always, thanks to my core of playtesters who are Daniel Hogetoorn (DeDaan), Ken Watson (The Archon), Scott Pagliaroni (spags) and Ron Gregory (Ron G).

Twilight Struggle Game Engine v4.8

IMPORTANT! This version of the spreadsheet has been tested and certified to run under both the 32-bit and 64-bit editions of Excel 2010. However, previous versions of the spreadsheet do *not* support Excel 2010.

This update incorporates a number of enhancements, fixes to address language-specific errors, and Excel 2010 compatibility.

Changes (v4.8):

- added instructional prompts when Card played as an Event instead of when played as a Card
- added code to automate Final Scoring when ending Turn 10
- added code to provide instructional prompt when attempting to perform Final Scoring when Turn 10 isn’t ended
- fixed Iron Lady Event text re: removing *all* USSR from U.K.
- fixed issue re: language-specific errors by changing code to be language-independent
- fixed issue re: Quagmire canceling NORAD when played for Ops (i.e. Quagmire only cancels NORAD when played as an Event)
- fixed issue re: Star Wars, Wargames and The Cambridge Five Cards being removed (i.e. not canceled and discarded) when Event conditions weren't met
- fixed issue re: Our Man in Tehran to disable [Draw Cards] button after being clicked
- updated Probability tab for the Summary form to indicate a successful Coup Attempt based on removing the minimum Influence (at least 1 INF)
- updated Card Event text to better clarify canceling Events when a Card is played as an Event
- updated Instructions worksheet as needed
- renamed [REMOVED CARDS] button to [PLAYED CARDS] and added discard pile lookup to form
- renamed [Current Card] button to [Headline Card] button; Headline Card now played from separate form to address random discard during Headline Events
- removed some graphical elements to remove dependence on Microsoft Common Controls which are no longer supported in Excel 2010

I'd like to extend a *huge* thanks to Daniel Hogetoorn (DeDaan) for his extensive feedback and rigorous play-testing. Also, thanks to Alban Ullrich (PacoHolliday) for identifying and providing information re: the 64-bit edition of Excel 2010.

If you have any questions, encounter any issues or would like to provide feedback, don't hesitate to contact me. Enjoy!

IMPORTANT! Due to some language-specific coding, it has been discovered that some Windows computers using other languages (ex. Dutch, French, etc.) can NOT perform some necessary functions (ex. Dealing Cards). I've identified and fixed the issue; however, I won't be posting a new version in the interim. If you are affected, please send me a PM (personal mail) with your e-mail address and I'll send you an updated version. A big thanks to Daniel Hogetoorn (DeDaan) for the heads up and testing!

This spreadsheet has been my obsession since I discovered Mosse Stenstrom's excellent Player's Aid and decided to add some "refinements". Initially, for me, this was an exercise to better understand the rules of Twilight Struggle and VBA (Visual Basic for Applications). To this day, I haven't played a complete game of Twilight Struggle!

If you encounter any "bugs" or have some suggestions, please don't hesitate to let me know. If you have found this Player's Aid useful, I'd appreciate hearing from you! We can all use some positive encouragement during these tough economic times :) God bless.

P.S. I'd like to thank Sam Lai (ah3dog) for his assistance in play-testing this spreadsheet. I'd also like to ask his forgiveness for "bailing" in the middle of our Twilight Struggle gaming session (through ACTS) so I could begin work on implementing his great recommendations!

Twilight Struggle Totally Revised Edition! v3.3

I've spent considerable time and effort to make this spreadsheet a "one-stop shop" for everything Twilight Struggle. It has been drastically overhauled since v3.2 with the following items in mind:

- make it as easy as possible to visually identify Controlled Countries (and Battlegrounds) and easily determine a Region's current Scoring state
- provide as much information as possible in the form of concise Rules, FAQs and Strategy Planner
- include time-saving form controls for easy entries and updates for Played Cards, Action Rounds and the VP Track
- visually alter the physical map to better represent the world

Changes:
- auto update Turn Track and Space Race Track based on entries for Played Cards
- form controls (checkboxes) for Action Round Track and Played Cards (Event & Operations)
- conditional formatting of Country boxes, based on Control, for easy visual identification
- conditional formatting of Region boxes based on DEFCON Status (highlights Region box in red if DEFCON restrictions in effect)
- included Region summary boxes so as to easily note number of Controlled Countries (and Battlegrounds) plus Scoring reference as reminder for quickly determining Scoring state (Presence, Domination or Control) for a Region
- automatic updating of VP track, from Calculations worksheet, by clicking VP button (macros must be enabled) when Scoring Regions; VP track keeps running tally of earned VP for each player and presents Score using Twilight Struggle standard scoring convention
- add concise Rules summary as well as FAQs based on offical and collected rulings

Ultimately, I've attempted to create as much automation and information as possible so as to make this an invaluable tool for tracking progress, calculating scores and easily referencing questions during gaming sessions. If you encounter any problems or have some suggestions, please let me know. God bless.

I use it with an ACTS game , it is very good job. Really thanks for this work.

May I report something ?

In Card index, Cards 101(Formosan revolution,102 (Iran-Irak War),103 (Defectors) are referenced in the "Late War " section.

Shouldn't be part of Early War section ?

Another updated version? Wooww....(I guess the new family member has not come yet, right?)

Let me play around this newer version!

O, I have one "BIG" recommendation...as almost everything is already in your spreadsheet, you may also want to implement the card playing mechanism as in ACTS, e.g. deal the cards to different players (different tabs, with password protection), show the table cards (playing, discarded..etc) in another tab, show the play log...

i.e. we don't have to depend on ACTS, but we can share the same spreadsheet on (upload/download) from the web server.

I know it's huge....but think about it when you have spare time

P.S. No need to thank me, I enjoyed being your tester.

Hi Sam. Baby is overdue by a week now and, if he/she isn't born in the next couple of days, we'll likely induce.

That aside, you've read my mind! I had been thinking about card management as being the next logical step in the evolution of this player's aid, however, you are right; it is a monumental task. I'll definitely store it in the back of my mind until such time as I have the inclination and/or time. Another great recommendation! Let me know if you encounter any bugs. Over and out.

Noticed a slight error in the card manifest.

"Junta" is listed as: "Add 2 Influence to any country in Central or South America. The USSR may make free Coup Attempts or Realignment rolls in either Central or South America using the Operations value of this card."

It should read: "Place 2 Influence in any Central or South American country. Then you may make a free Coup attempt or Realignment roll in one of these regions (using the card's Operations Value)."

The card isn't USSR specific. I don't know if maybe it is different in earlier editions, but the latest one is definitely not USSR specific.

Anyway still, so very useful. Excellent work!

Another error:

Card #67, Grain Sales to the Soviets, doesn't have the updated card text on it -- "...if the USSR player has no cards, or the card is returned, the US player may use the Operation value of this card to conduct Operations normally"

Noticed an error today using this great resource. When I try to enter the card NATO (I'm the US playing it for Ops) it won't let me, stating that Warsaw Pact or Marshall Plan need to be played first. Of course, if I'm just playing it for Ops, those cards don't need to be played first.

Great work!

A quick reference page which allows a game to be stopped for the night then continued would be very helpful.
i.e. list of cards in draw deck, discard pile, out of play, and what the players are holding when the game is paused.

Useful to have a comment box for each turn.
That way you can keep track of which cards were discarded via the placeholder. Particularly useful in the rare circumstances a scoring card got discarded. Maybe implent a discarded/burnt card column for each turn.

Excellent stuff.

Hi Troy.

Here are some other card text changes for your file:

CIA Created:
USSR reveals hand this turn. Then the US may Conduct Operations as if they played a 1 Op card.

Olympic Games:
Player sponsors Olympics. Opponent may participate or boycott. If Opponent participates, each player rolls one die, with the sponsor adding 2 to his roll. High roll gains 2 VP. Reroll ties. If Opponent boycotts, degrade DEFCON one level and the Sponsor may Conduct Operations as if they played a 4 Ops card.

Lone Gunman:
US Player reveals his hand. Then the USSR may Conduct Operations as if they played a 1 Op card.

ABM Treaty:
Improve DEFCON one level. Then player may Conduct Operations as if they played a 4 Ops card.

Soviets Shoot Down KAL-007:
Degrade DEFCON one level. US gains 2 VP. If South Korea is US controlled, then the US may place Influence or attempt Realignments as if they played a 4 Ops card.

Glasnost:
USSR gains 2 VP. Improve DEFCON one level. If 'The Reformer' is in effect, then the USSR may place Influence or attempt Realignments as if they played a 4 Ops card.

Shuttle Diplomacy:
Play in front of US player. During the next scoring of the Middle East or Asia (whichever comes first), subtract one Battleground country from the USSR total, then put this card in the discard pile. Does not count for Final Scoring at the end of Turn 10.

We Will Bury You:
Unless #32 UN Intervention is played as an Event on the US player's next round, USSR gains 3 VP prior to any US VP award. Degrade DEFCON status one level.

South African Unrest:
USSR either adds 2 Influence in South Africa or adds 1 Influence in South Africa and 2 Influence in any countries adjacent to South Africa.

ALso, it would be handy if the map for this Deluxe version could be updated to include the new naming for the space race levels. They're named slightly differently to the original map.

I'm currently working on a card management system to replace ACTS internal to the spreadsheet. It is going very well so far! I'm also planning to implement logging which is necessitated by some of the card Events. All of your suggestions should be handled in the next release. Keep the ideas coming!

At the moment, the spreadsheet prevents NORAD from being able to played as an event if Quagmire's already been played. This is incorrect. NORAD should be playable as an event after Quagmire's been played.

The spreadsheet makes extensive use of VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) and has been tested under Office 2003 and 2007. I'm unsure if OpenOffice support VBA. I suspect the "proof is in the pudding" and that you won't have much success under OpenOffice.

I have Open Office and I'm at best computer semi-literate but it opened for me. I got a prompt to use either the original format or OpenOffice with an advisory that the original format might lose some data and apparently I Chose Wisely by clicking to the OpenOffice application since it functions correctly.

It's a thing of beauty, thanks for your hard work.

Hi,

awesome work you made..

I was trying the last version and was happy to use the card management feature, but when i click "Deal card" no cards are dealt.

When i click "Card Hand", it keep telling me "This functionality has been disabled..." even if the "Deal Cards?" is checked.

I'm using Excel 2000, and before upgrading my version, i was checking if i have done something wrong.

Keep your good work!

I haven't tested on Office 2000 and it sounds like you are doing everything right. However, I'm surprised you wouldn't receive an error message. It is likely that this is related to an issue of VBA support for the specific functions I'm using in the code. Can anybody else test under Excel 2000 and post results?

Hi,

Just to tell you, i made a try with a Excel 2002 and i wasn't able to use the cards feature too.

so it must be a function you used.

Thanks anyway!

I'll try to upgrade to use it. Keep up your work!

This is AMAZING, but I am having trouble walking through a few test turns. Is there a quick start guide that tells me exactly what to do, and in what order?

I tried to start a game with "testRED" and "testBLUE" as players.

- I'm not prompted to place influence or anything when I log in with testRED, so I assumed I would have to place influence at startup as normal.
- I dealt cards
- I added +3 inf to Finland and Poland by entering the appropriate numbers directly to those soviet boxes
- Then I chose my headline ("Socialist Government")
- I save the file; it logs me out as testRed
- I reopen the file; log in as testBLUE
- I can view my hand
- I notice that I can click the "played cards" tab to unfairly view the soviet headline. Note to self: don't click on this tab at this time. But how will I know if Soviets have chosen their headline?
- I add +4 to West Germany, +2 to Italy, +1 to Greece, +1 to Iran, +2 to Israel
- I choose my headline ("Defectors")
- I save (and therefore log out)
- I log in as Soviets
- I'm stuck at this point, as I don't know how to proceed. Will the spreadsheet prompt me as to what action now needs to take place? Shall I just ignore the "Socialist Government" card because Defectors is played? Should I just proceed to play a card from my hand?

Again, this is an amazing piece of work! I'm just a little disoriented

This seems to be a common issue about how to select your Headline Card. It appears most people play their Headline Card which is incorrect.

There is a drop-down list in the Card Hand under Step 2 which is entitled Select Headline Card (please see Instructions section). Use this option to privately choose your Headline Card. Once both players have selected their Headline Cards, the result is shown in the Game Log. At this point, play the first Headline Card, as indicated in the Game Log, and resolve the Card.

As for resolving Cards, simply perform the actions as shown on the Card based on the Instructions section. In some cases, a player will be prompted to automatically perform common tasks (ex. add VP, Military Ops, degrade DEFCON, etc.).

I like your idea of a quick start guide (i.e. example play like in the TS manual). I'm working on a new version with new features and I'll incorporate this idea. Thanks!

Is there any reason why the CARD HAND is a separate window that cannot be resized?

My problem is I'm using a netbook with a maximum screen resolution of 1024x600. The CARD HAND window is too tall to fit on the screen and I can't access the controls on the bottom. I can access every other worksheet fine because they all have scrollbars. If I could either scroll or resize the window there would be no problem, but both options are disabled.

Why not have the card hand as another worksheet?

No worries mate. I've reduced the size of the CARD HAND and I should be uploading an updated version shortly. If you want to send me a PM with your e-mail address, I can send it to you right now (because you are special). However, I would like to know that it fits on your particular screen if I send it your way. Also, does the EVENTS-IN-EFFECT window fit completely on your screen?

If necessary, I might be able to do something with scrollbars, however, I don't believe a userform's windows can be resized. I'm hoping the reduction of the size of the CARD HAND window should do the trick. Thanks for the feedback.

I had briefly tested using OpenOffice and, unfortunately, the dependence on VBA is a major issue. To ensure the spreadsheet works as advertised, you'll need either Office 2003 or 2007 and, therefore, running under Windows. I've yet to test under Office 2010 ...

Hi Troy,

Amazing tool! But I fear that it's only working for people with Windows in English (see this article: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3254443/excel-vba-behaves...). I'm no computer expert, but a friend of me had the same problem as the Frenchman a few posts ago. Maybe the filename of the card management tool is not being accepted by foreign Office versions?

However, my version is working great! Thanks a lot!

Cheers,
Daniël.

Hi Troy,

Just tried your program on my laptop (where I have a Dutch version of Excel). And indeed, it doesn't work :-( It doesn't give the question about the optional cards and the button "Deal Cards" doesn't work, although the function on the mapboard is triggered. I installed all Visual Basic add-ins, including the Translation tool, but nothing helps. I really think that the problem is related to the article in my previous post. I don't know if you can maybe change some file names or so to solve the problem. On the other hand, I myself will use the program on my "English" computer, so I don't really need the fix. Just trying to help our foreign Twilight Struggle friends ;-)

Cheers,
Daniël.

I know I've played with someone who used the Hungarian language and it worked fine. In the case of the Frenchman, are you referring to Jean-Francois Dube? If so, he was using Excel 2002 and the minimum requirement is Excel 2003 (or greater). However, I never did hear back if he continued to have the issue once he upgraded to Excel 2003. What version of Excel are you using?

In any case, I'd like to test on my end. Can you provide me with the details to setup the Regional and Language settings to match those on your Dutch laptop? I want to make sure I'm comparing apples with apples here. Oh, did you receive an error message? That would be helpful as well.

Lastly, I really appreciate you letting me know about this issue. I'd like to keep my foreign Twilight Struggle friends happy too!

If you'd like my personal e-mail address, let me know and I'll send you a PM with it. Thanks for your help.

I just started using Player Aid. I am the USSR and my friend is the US. He selected his headline event and sent me the spreadsheet. I followed the instructions to select my headline event. When I pushed "go," a message popped up telling me to look at the game log, etc. When I click on the "OK" button, Excel totally crashes. I've tried this multiple times, always with the same result. I'm using Excel 2010. Is this a known issue? Here's the error message:

I'm hoping to post a new version in the near future which includes some major updates and information re: Excel 2010. The current (and future) version support the 32-bit version of Excel 2010; however, the 64-bit version will not be supported because Microsoft hasn't ported over some critical controls, to a 64-bit environment, that I use as part of the spreadsheet. I'm not too impressed about that because they are called Microsoft Common Controls which are standard and widely used. Thanks Microsoft!

Also, the Microsoft Common Controls aren't registered by default for the 32-bit version of Excel 2010, however, it can be done quite easily using the following instructions (see end of post).

Also, it'll be required to save the Excel file in the Macro-enabled format (.xlsm), when using Excel 2010, which will be backward compatible to Excel 2007. Therefore, if you are using Excel 2010, you'll only be able to play PBEM games with players that are using either Excel 2007 or 2010.

Unfortunately, the Excel 97-2003 format (which is the default format of the spreadsheet on the BGG website) doesn't appear to be very stable in Excel 2010; it worked perfectly fine under Excel 2007.

Long story short: If you and your friend are using at least Excel 2007+, download the current spreadsheet, save the file in Macro-enabled format (.xlsm) and it should work fine for you both.

Subscribe to this file and you'll receive a notification when I post the updated version.

Let me know if that helps.

Thanks for the response. I'm running the 32-bit version of Excel 2010 on the 64-bit version of Windows 7. I registered the mscomctl.ocx file, but Excel still crashes as before.

Hi Brian. After your initial post, I did some digging and discovered 3 issues related to Excel 2010 with my spreadsheet. I won't get into any details but I believe I've solved all 3 and that my lastest version of the spreadsheet will run reliably under both 32-bit and 64-bit Excel 2010 without the common controls required. If you'd be willing to send me a PM (private message) with your e-mail address, I'll forward you the latest version and if you could test it, I would greatly appreciate it. Let me know and thanks.

Fantastic work!

In the DEFCON 1 box on the board you write "Game lost by player that degraded tension to DEFCON 1"

Shouldn't this be "Game lost by active player when tension is degraded to DEFCON 1"?

regards

That's a good point Thor. I'll make the change for the next version. Thanks for the feedback and the compliment.

How does one place the additional startup influence at the start of a game ( 6 for USSR and 7 for US ?) Do I simply click on the country and place it? The "Place Influence" section at the bottom won't allow many of the initial placements.

Thanks

P.S. Is there a more appropriate forum for questions on using this spreadsheet?

Yes, you can enter the influence directly into the country for initial influence placement by clicking on the appropriate side of the country box and simply entering the amount you want added. By default, the spreadsheet will add the number of INF to the current amount for that country.

This is spelled out in the Instructions section so check that out as well.

As for questions, to be honest, I don't receive many inquiries related to using the spreadsheet. I've tried to answer all questions in the Instructions and Quick Start sections. I'd say just post your questions here and, in that way, others may benefit as well. Happy gaming!

Troy,

Thanks for doing this, it is awesome.

In the past we've used your spreadsheet with ACTS to keep track of the cards. Now, we were hoping to use the excel spreadsheet to do everything.

Weird thing...when I click on the 'x' to close the window when I'm done with my turn, it tells me I'm logged out (so far, so good) and then asks if I want to create a compressed file for emailing (which I do).

When I indicate that I do, the following appears:

and then excel hangs.

Any idea? I assume I have something set up wrong, but have no idea what that might be...

Thanks!

Dave

Thanks for the kudos Dave. Assuming your opponent is using a different computer, does this happen to him/her? If not, I'd recommend ensuring the spreadsheet is being saved to your local hard-drive (that is NOT compressed) and NOT a networked hard-drive, USB key or removable drive of any type. I encounter issues with compressed files at work when extracting/saving to a network drive (that is likely compressed). This isn't an issue of the spreadsheet necessarily. Let me know if that helps ...

P.S. I can send along the latest version, that I'll be posting in the near future on BGG, although I doubt it'll help as I haven't made any changes/fixes pertaining to your particular issue.

I was trying to get them onto a thumb drive, so maybe that was the issue. I will try to save onto my hard drive instead.

Edit: That seems to have been the problem. When I have the spreadsheet on my hard drive, there are no problems with generating the zip file.

Thanks!

Dave
