Using the central-limit theorem, you can approximate the distribution of the dice sum.

This excel spreadsheet gives you the chances of overoll, the mean hit number if you do not overoll, the mean hit number including overoll for any given number of dice and modified combat strength.

You can even get the probability of doing a minimal number of hit points (useful if you are attacking MF or forts)
