Yes, you read correctly: by now the set of rules me and my group are using is so different from the original ones that it would be almost misleading to use "Leader 1" in the title :)

How have we ever gotten so far? We liked the game a lot from day 1, but were disappointed by some of its mechanics causing the races to resemble the real ones rather poorly, while offering very few strategic options. After lots of brainstorming and then testing, we finally arrived to this set of rules, which seems to play out nicely for all kinds of routes, while not being too complex. Enjoy!

As a bonus, a separate section of comments, where I discuss the motivation and real-life examples behind the new rules. Also, a bunch of concepts we have invented from scratch in order to make the game more versatile or realistic:

Appendix 1: additional concepts
Appendix 2: cobbled races
Appendix 3: individual time trials
Appendix 4: team time trials
Appendix 5: other classifications in stage races
Appendix 6: simulating real races
Appendix 7: peloton AD 2009

Last update, 21.01.2010:

- explicit "zero energy" rule (C.5),
- explicit "game end" rule (C.6),
- no blocking (you can pass through other riders),
- enhanced time trial rules,
- corrections and clarifications (especially when introducing team pursuit points, a.k.a. TPPs),
- brand new peloton 2010.

Nice set of rules!

Re: Peloton AD 2009: CSC stopped as a sponsor for Riis Cycling in 2008, so - until a new sponsor have been found - the correct name of the team is "Team Saxo Bank".

We played our first two Leader 2 stages this weekend.

When we were done, my friend looked at the rules and said "Peloton A.D. 2009 . . . John Madden, you have been served!" (referencing the Madden NFL computer game).

We did our best to approximate the Alpe D'Huez in our second stage - and then went at it.

An incredible amount of work Garf.

It's about time we tried out some of your suggestions and fed back our experiences.

yay

btw, there is an update coming soon. includes minor improvements mostly:
- paying +1 already when attacking (limits the number of silly short jumps),
- what to do when energy is zero: move the rider free-1, but minimum 1,
- update on skills in the peloton.

Superb piece of work!

Thanks a lot!

Can anyone advise on how to determine a hill-race. The kind of 'Amstel Gold Race' and 'Luik-Batenaken-Luik'.

Riders need a certain 'Hill'-skill plus having some uphill sprint would help...Riders like Kirchen and Di Luca or Gilbert usually do well there.

thx modest

Hilly races are indeed a big challenge, because you need the hills and downhills to be short, but sharp. I solve it by introducing new tiles, see:

http://boardgamegeek.com/image/519917

You could try printing these in your local copy shop, or even at home using this software: http://posterazor.sourceforge.net

In my peloton, Kirchen is a leader with explosiveness and aggressiveness, Gilbert is a rouleur with the same skills, Di Luca is doped

Thx Daniel,

Have any ideas gone to team management.

Like having a budget and having to recruit riders by making bids?

This would realy add to the season or campaign feeling of this game.

I would love this kind of stuff, but the majority of my fellow players is not into cycling so much, so I'm happy enough I persuaded them to do the Leader 2 season, although I still have to choose myself the optimal line-up for each race for some of them.
