I would like to see this file, but am getting the following error:
"This file has been damaged and cannot be repaired."

Does it work for others? If so, could anyone email me a copy of the working file? Drop me a PM if so... thanks!

Nevermind. It suddenly worked.

Very nicely done!

Brilliant work Peterk, thank you for making Jays excellent tutorials easy to print. I have had them printed and bound so have a very handy reference/learning aid.

Kudos to you

I downloaded thinking, yeah, yeah ... another file. ho hum. But then when I looked, I had to flip you a gold. Good work. Very good. Jay's material was the best as it was, but this new packaging makes it flow perfectly.

I agree with everyone else; this is a well written document with great use of images and examples.

I am a little confused, though. I thought ASLSK1 was released to introduce ASL to people in a bite-sized chunk, hence the lack of vehicles as well as the shortened rulebook. I like the official rulebook, but wanted something a little better organized and easier to reference. This rulebook tops 130 pages - for a SK that was only meant to come with 11! Even printing it double-sided, I'm still looking at a 66 page rulebook.

Am I missing the intention of the document? I was under the impression it would give me a simpler explanation of ASLSK1, but it seems to be for the folks who would like a more extensive explanation, not necessarily a simpler one.

Please don't get me wrong - everyone seems to love this one, and it will probably by my go-to guide when there's a rules dispute. But is there a better document for teaching the game to new people?

This is NOT a rulebook! It's simply a very detailed tutorial to help you learn how to play ASLSK. Even though this file is formatted to sort of look like a rulebook, this document does not replace the official ASLSK rulebooks. You cannot play ASLSK using just this document.

Note that this file is a compilation of numerous individual articles here on BGG that together cover all three of the original Starter Kits, not just ASLSK #1. So if you are learning only ASLSK #1 by itself, there's a lot more here than you need right now.

As far as the document's intention? It addresses a widespread problem with the ASLSK line: people would purchase the ASLSK games, but be unable to figure out how the game works just from reading the rulebook. ASL/ASLSK isn't hard to learn if you have an experienced player teaching you, but it can be an incredibly opaque game system if you are trying to learn it on your own. This tutorial walks you through the main rules of the ASLSK system, explaining each one in exhaustive detail and giving extensive examples of the rules in action.

I wasn't trying to simplify any aspect of the ASLSK rules; I just wanted to make sure that a reader could understand how the rules worked. Is it overkill? Too much explanation? For some people, perhaps, but I've received almost no complaints in regards to that.

Given the choice between possibly overexplaining some aspects of the game system, or using shorter explanations that risk leaving some readers unclear about how some rules work, I chose to explain everything as thoroughly as possible. The overwhelmingly positive feedback that I've received indicates that I made the correct choice.

The official rulebooks are your only option. MMP certainly would not allow anyone to post any sort of an alternative rulebook for the ASLSK system. The rulebooks in the later ASLSK releases are better – more complete & correct – but they are identical to the ASLSK #1 rulebook in terms of the writing and the organization of the rules.

The rulebook in the ASLSK Expansion Pack #1 is currently the best ASLSK rulebook available. If you want a better rulebook than that, then consider moving to full ASL, whose rulebook most certainly is well organized and easy to reference.

Thanks, that clarifies it. Maybe I should have said 'learning aid' rather than 'rulebook'. Either way... a way to learn ASL.

I wasn't calling it that. Yes, it's a long document, but overkill is in the eye of the beholder. I actually complemented it in my first post as being 'well-written'.

Good. I'm glad people like it. Again, I like it, too. I was simply looking for something more abbreviated that I could use to teach new people.

Thanks for the tip, though I probably won't. I'm looking for something a little shorter than that to teach people with little to no experience to wargames.

Thanks for taking time to respond,

David

Ah, I see... a teaching aid. In that case, I would agree that my tutorials probably aren't exactly what you are looking for.

There really isn't a whole lot of teaching material available for the ASLSK system, but here are the links to the ones that I know about. I can't recommend any of these one way or the other (I'm still so "burned out" from writing my own tutorial that I can't stand to work through anyone else's introductory material), but perhaps you'll find something more suitable for your purpose here:
