ALIENS.rtf (78 KB) (Log in or Register to download.)
This is a great game, but even in the original rules some rules were not described properly (or at all). For instance there were many grey areas on carrying Incapacitated Marines, the Movie Scenario that was laid out by Leading Edge was also weak. And while the ammo restriction rule was a good idea the constant paperwork was a pain and it never really came into play unless you had a bunch of foolish Marines just standing around firing at everything possible (if Marines are doing this they will probably die anyway, so what's the point of keeping track of their ammo).

My rules 2.0 version is titled THIS TIME IT'S WAR, these rules simply take all the original rules (and some optional rules) and bring them together in a simple precise concise order. Also a VERY detailed movie scenario crafted by me has been put together. I have also included a BRAND NEW scenario, the MED LAB. Time to kill some Facehuggers, if you can!

I have played this game for about a decade, figuring out what worked and what didn't. Way to much time has been spent by me creating what you are about to read, I hope you enjoy it.

Please email me with any questions or just to give me some feedback, I hope you enjoy!

Hi Neil,
I've just discovered this game and I was just going through your improved rules set and noticed that you did not include the "Firing Through Marines" or "Additional Aim Time" optional rules from the expansion.

I was just wondering if you could explain why you have dropped those two.

I also noticed that in your rules Marines cannot move through each other but they seem to be able to in the original.

[Awesome effort by the way.]

It was just a matter of playing this game over and over in different ways. Through multiple plays using different rules the game came to life in different ways. Eventually playing with a certain combination of rules made the game seem most fair, streamlined and fun. Which is what I finally settled on and put down on paper (such as it is).

In addressing specific things, moving through marines never worked for me. Marines being able to move through each other never made sense at all in the air duct scenario, and actually makes that scenario alot easier. And it was also a matter of balancing. By getting rid of that move through, the grenades were made way less lethal. As in the movie they use they grenade launcher alot without actually killing each other immediately by doing so. Just an example of play that is more fun while giving a slight negative in return, a negative that in my opinion makes the game better.

For the firing through Marines rule, that didn't work for a few reasons. Mainly the Aliens are so lethal. Giving a Marine a chance to make a really terrible shot is usually just worthless and it gives a player another chance to make a bad move when they should be doing something else. Especially cumbersome for new players that don't really understand how brutal the Aliens are yet. By killing that rule in my opinion not much was lost at all and it makes the game more streamlined, and definitely friendlier for new players.

Additional Aim Time was another thing that was okay in theory, like keeping count of ammo. But in the end it was just another thing to remember that usually came to nothing. The position of characters and who is alive changes so fast on the board it was just to bothersome to use or implement. It was also another rule that was terrible for new players and would just get them killed while at the same time it was something that a really experienced player could at times abuse.

I hope that answered your questions. I'm happy so many players enjoy ALIENS 2.0. Thank you.
