Nice. It would be handy if future versions had a list in the beginning of not only the type of game, but also how many players. I often find myself picking the game based on the number of players first and other criteria second.

You might restart page numbering at the beginning of each game, so that people could just print out ones they wanted or just reprint ones that had changed (when there was an update).

Also, you might consider removing games that didn't pan out. Examples: Turtlebutt was developed into Terrapin, and so shouldn't get a separate entry. Steal 6 was removed from the wiki by the author, because it didn't ultimately work out.

I think that this is a great idea. I own the Decktet book but bought me a DINA A5 folder for additional or updated game rules.

Matthieu, do you need help, i.e. for checking which rules did change?

I originally wanted to make a compact booklet, to reduce the amount of paper needed for the printing. But it's true that it makes updating an existing one impossible.

I made scripts that grab the content of the Wiki, compare the text with the previous version and turn the text into LaTeX format for typesetting, so in theory I don't need help, but proof-reading the booklet before submiting it to BGG could be helpful.

The rules for chicane's setup are missing a sentence or two.

Quote:
Setup
Decide arbitrarily who will deal the first hand. In subsequent hands, the player on the dealer’s left becomes the new dealer.

Deal the entire basic deck out evenly to players. Three players will get 12 cards each; four players will get 9 each. The player on the dealer’s left starts bidding by calling either a suit, top or bottom. If a suit is called, then that will be the trump suit for the hand. If top or
bottom is called, then that determines how cards will be read for the hand. In a top hand, the topmost of the two suit symbols determines the suit of a number card. In a bottom hand, the bottommost suit symbol does.

Example: In a top hand, the 8 Wyrms-Knots is a Wyrm card. In a bottom
hand, it is a Knot card.

[missing text]

Continuing around the table clockwise, players must bid a number of tricks that they think they will be able to take. Once all players’ bids have been recorded, the player who bid first selects a card
from their hand to lead the first trick.

It seems to be missing this from the Wiki:

Quote:
The next player, clockwise around the table, must then declare a trump suit (if the first player called TOP or BOTTOM) or TOP or BOTTOM (if the first player called a trump suit. After this call, it will have been decided both how suits will be read (top or bottom) and which suit is trump.

Thank you *very* much for your work on this!

If it isn't too much too ask: Would it be possible to add an alphabetical list of content to the file with the entries linked to the actual pages? Finding specific rules would be so much easier... Of course it would be even better if the game entries on the other two lists (category and # of players) were links as well.

And regarding the layout: The black rectangles with the name of the games on the side are a very good idea, only they look a little too close to the text. I guess you planned them to be reading marks that can be seen on the border on the printed book. But in that case, I don't understand why there is a white border beneath them and the page's edge. Shouldn't the black rectangle reach out unto the edge, so the final cut of the book will show the black from the book's side later?

Finally, maybe I missed it, but otherwise it would be nice if the next release (if there will be one) could carry it's version number somewhere, so it would be easier to see which one is the latest file version on your reading device if you don't print it to paper.

Do you mean links inside the PDF file? Since the booklet is meant to be printed, I thought it wouldn't make any sense. But I guess I can make links, yes. In this case, an alphabetical index (with links) is also a good idea.

The idea here was to be able to flip thourhg the book and find quickly the games in alphabetical order. Putting the black tabs on the edge of the paper isn't going to help regarding the viewing-the-book-from-the-edge affair, because for most games the rules are short (a few pages) and there are too many tabs in different length to see anything. It makes sense in a very thick phonebook or dictionary (thousand pages, 26 tabs), but in here (180 pages, 57 tabs) I'm pretty sure it won't do much good. Moving the tabs away from the text and closer to the edge of the page is a good idea though, it will probably look better. will not work, because printers cannot print to the edge of the paper. If the tabs are flushed with the page's edge, they will only be partly printed and become unusable.

That's an easy addition to the booklet

But your PDF-file is absolutely perfect as a rule library on your iPad. That is where I keep it right now and that is why I would love to have links... You might say I could use the wiki instead, but I do not have an internet connection everywhere and even then the PDF-viewer is simply faster to look up a ruleset than the browser.

Ok, it was just a proposal because I thought that was what you intended from the beginning and most likely I won't even notice that anymore using the file on the iPad.

But still I don't agree with the point that it would be useless: Even if the tabs run up and down the side of the pages several times, they can be very helpful to quickly find a specific passage again. Having "equipped" some of my books with similar markings manually (using text markers) even if it was only for 2-3 pages, my experience is that it doesn't matter much how long the marked chapters really are. If too many short chapters follow, spreading the side of the book still makes the tabs perfectly visible. At least I always remembered the specific patterns of such markings very fast when working with such a book.

Version 1.7 of the rules booklet is in the moderation queue. It's 210 pages long, and I start to wonder if it isn't becoming too big...
