JLeHavre 1.26

This is a computer version of Le Havre. It was designed in Java by Grzegorz Kobiela with the approval of designer Uwe Rosenberg and publisher Lookout Games (Hanno Girke). It uses the original graphics with permission from Lookout Games, the rights holder, and Klemens Franz, the artist.

ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.

Do NOT distribute this game and do NOT use any parts of it without permission. Let your friends download this file from here. The simple reason is, I'd just like to know how many people are playing this game.

You may play this game free of charge and how often and how long you want. There are no restrictions to that. However, if you like the computer version, consider the purchase of the original board game.

This is version 1.26. It comes with the base game, the Essen 2008 and 2010 special buildings and Le Grand Hameau.

___________________________

Obligatory zip file 3/3

Comes with:
* all the class files containing the game logic and GUI
* all the patches and updates since the last release

This file DOES NOT work on its own.
You also need to download these files unless you already got them:
* the basic files (BasicFiles.zip)
* at least one of the image packs (Images_XX.zip) consisting of 4 partial RAR archives
* the images addon pack (Images_Addon.zip) unless you already have the image files for the Essen 2010 bonus buildings

Unzip all these zip files to the same folder. As for the images from this archive: add the containing image files to the proper directories. Do not delete any image files that you've received with the Images_XX.zip archive.

Attention!
I forgot to include two important files in this ZIP archive. The game won't start without them. You can create these files yourself easily. Just follow these steps:
- After you've unzipped all archives as necessary, head to the "config" folder of your game installation.
- Create a new file "lang.txt". Open it and type "en" or "de" (without quotes) and save the file. This will be the language the game will start in for the first time. You can later change it in the Login Window of the running game.
- Create another file "login.txt". You may leave it empty for the first time you start the game. You must enter a game and user name in the Login Window later. These data will be saved in this file.
I'm sorry for the inconveniences!

Start the game via the "JLeHavre.jar" file according to the procedure of your operating system. On Windows, double-click the jar file to start the game.

This is the only file that may and will be subject to change. Any updates will replace this file with a new one containing all updated classes. If not otherwise stated, any such release is INCOMPATIBLE with older releases. This is especially true for version 1.0. You can't play against opponents having the old version.

Here are some of the things that have changed since the last version:
* (2011/2/6) You could return loans for other players, but ended up returning your own and a negative cash total. This behavior is illegal by the rules, so has been disabled. It was never planned to be enabled anyway.
* (2001/2/6) If you sold stuff on another player's turn, you wouldn't see your new cash total immediately, only after the end of the current turn.
* (2010/12/31) At the end of a round, if you had 0 francs, you could sell a building any number of times. It wouldn't get sold, but you still would get the money. This is no longer possible.
* (2010/12/29) The Shipping Line cropped the text informing you about your shipping options. It now displays the whole text like intended.
* (2010/12/29) The Trafficking Spot was ill-coded. You can now exchange more than one good of one type and receive more than one good of one type.
* (2010/12/23) If you undid the move in which you got the Rattletrap car, no-one would ever get it. Now the Rattletrap car should work like intended.

If you like the game, please consider a donation - hard cash or geek gold, both are fine ways to show your appreciation. Thanks so much in advance and have a lot of fun with the game.

JLeHavre 1.25+

Obligatory zip file 2.5/3 (ENGLISH + GERMAN)

Comes with:
* the Essen 2010 bonus buildings image files.

This file DOES NOT work on its own.
You also need to download these files:
* the class files (Classes_YYYY-MM-DD.zip)
* the basic files (BasicFiles.zip)
* all parts of one images pack (parts 1-4)

Add these images to their proper folders. Therefore you need to already have downloaded and unpacked the images pack.
You don't need this file if you already got version 1.25 as these images were part of that release.

You don't need to download this file again when there is a new version. This file contains stuff that will never be subject to change.

What to do with the .rar files?

For people who have never seen .rar files before: A .rar file is an archive file like .zip on Windows. You need a special program to open these files. There are freeware and shareware programs that are able to handle .rar files properly: e.g. WinRAR, RarZilla, etc.

The default .zip feature of Windows does not allow for split archive files. The images zip file is 25 mbs, but BGG somehow only allows for files up to 5-7 mbs, so I needed to split the archive and decided to use .rar. Therefore you need to download 4 partial archives named .part1.rar, .part2.rar, .part3.rar, and .part4.rar. All these 4 files form a single entity. Download all of them, but open just the first of them (.part1.rar) and extract the contents.

The contents are a single .zip file. Extract this to your Le Havre installation folder. Then you're done.

Just a quick note - I created a bat file to launch the application (create a text file in notepad and name it lehavre.bat).

I used:

javaw -Xmx256M -jar LeHavre.jar

After it starts, you can close the little dos like window. This gives the application a little more memory - I noticed it started to slow down a lot after playing a little while, so I upped the memory and it ran much better.

For info, anyone with connection issues, one pc dropping out or lagging behind, try the following (from Hamachi Support):

After installing Hamachi you may encounter connectivity issues due to connection Metrics. Windows uses Metrics to determine the order it will attempt to acquire internet access. What is happening here is the Hamachi adapter is being auto assigned a lower Metric than the adapter that provides your internet connection.

To manually assign a Metric:
Windows XP

1. Open the Control Panel
2. Go into Network Connections
3. Right Click on the Hamachi adapter, and click Properties
4. Highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and click the Properties button
In a 64bit OS, it will be listed as Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)
5. Now choose the Advanced button
6. At the bottom of this page, uncheck the box labeled Automatic Metric, and enter 9000 as the Interface Metric

Windows Vista

1. Open the Control Panel
2. Go into Network and Sharing Center
3. In the left pane, click Manage network connections
4. Right Click on the Hamachi adapter, and click Properties
5. Highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and click the Properties button
In a 64bit OS, it will be listed as Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)
6. Now choose the Advanced button
7. At the bottom of this page, uncheck the box labeled Automatic Metric, and enter 9000 as the Interface Metric

Performing the above steps will assign Hamachi a very high metric, normally making it the very last thing Windows will turn to to attempt an internet connection. If that does not resolve it, perform the same steps on the adapter you want your internet connection to be on, but assign it a 100 metric.

This worked for me running two WinXP machines and a Vista machine, both hardwired and on a wireless network.

There is a possibility to play by email:

Create a new game for every player that you plan to play with on your computer, given them their proper names and colors and start the game. Save it exactly in that moment and send the savegame file to the first player. This player opens the file and loads the game, does their move and clicks on the PROCEED button and saves again. This savegame goes to the next player and so on.

Most probably you didn't get all of the files in the correct folders.
Please, first check if your files structure is exactly as listed above.

Here's a work-around to start a game without the jar file: Open a terminal window and navigate to the game folder. Use the following command to start the game:

java -cp ".;./jars/commons-logging.jar;./jars/jgroups-all.jar;./jars/log4j.jar" main.LeHavre

Replace any semi-colons ( ; ) with regular colons ( : ) on any operating system other than Windows. Please google to find out how to use terminal windows. Here are some tips: On Windows, press WINDOWS and R simultaneously to open a command window. Enter CMD and press ENTER. A black terminal window should pop up. To navigate to your game folder (let's assume it's saved at "C:\JLeHavre1.0") type the following:

cd "c:\JLeHavre1.0"

After that use the command above. Note, however, that regardless of the method to start the game, the file structure needs to be exactly how described above.

Very exciting! I am having trouble getting the code to run, unfortunately. Quick note/caveat: I'm using a Mac.

I downloaded the various zip files, copied everything to match the desired file structure, and fired up the .jar file, but it would not execute. So I tried the command line option you offered. Again, no joy; the error was:

Exception in thread "main" java.lang.UnsupportedClassVersionError: Bad version number in .class file
at java.lang.ClassLoader.defineClass1(Native Method)
at java.lang.ClassLoader.defineClass(ClassLoader.java:675)
at java.security.SecureClassLoader.defineClass(SecureClassLoader.java:124)

at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(ClassLoader.java:251)

The error is the same whether I try to run the original or the patched version.

Any thoughts? Thanks for your help in advance.

The error message occurs when you're trying to run an old version of Java. This is the case with most Macs. You've most probably have Java version 1.5, but you need 1.6 in order to run the game. There are some workarounds for Macs, but there are other geeks who know better.

Maybe ask user dreadpirate ( http://boardgamegeek.com/user/dreadpirate). He got the game to work on a Mac.

I got the program running on MacOSX

You need the java 1.6 version from Apple - which I think is only for Intel machines and for Leopard ie version 10.5

I ran this in the terminal

First cd to the directory the LeHavre.jar file is in

Then I used the command line
/System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.6/Home/bin/java -cp ".:./jars/commons-logging.jar:./jars/jgroups-all.jar:./jars/log4j.jar" main.LeHavre

If you had chosen java 1.6 to be your default then you do not need the full path to java

Hmm.
This sounds very cool. I wish it would run.
All I get is a split second flash of the black command box and then - nothing.
I guess it's something to do with me not understanding the first thing about Java.

We have some trouble with the game.

1. Some players have no visual game window. (Other players confirm that they are in the game.)
2. One player joined twice and couldn't be kicked.
3. After a while we got an error "maximum 5 players something" while testing it with 4 players.

Any idea what went wrong? Most log files are empty.

I've got 9 log files 6 empty,
twice:
Quote:
[2009/06/23, 19:54.37] Event logging started.
[2009/06/23, 19:55.07] Login data saved: [Game=Le Havre] [Name=marwar]
[2009/06/23, 19:55.17] Event loggin stopped.

and once

Log files are closed when you close the game - they stay empty as long as the game is running. So, don't wonder why they were all empty.

Could you please describe how you were attending to play the game? Online via Hamachi or locally via LAN? Do all players have the latest version (including the patches)? Did you try to log in all at once (maybe a concurrency problem I haven't thought of)? Do you play via WLAN or if playing online do some of the players connect with Hamachi via WLAN (this has caused problems in the past - due to Hamachi!)?

I've never had a similar problem, yet, so I currently can't think of the reason for this failure.

Hamachi with mixed OS (some Linux and some Windows clients).
Quote:

Some players tested it last week. So if there were no changes during the last week, it should be the same version.
Quote:

I don't think so. There was no join 3... 2... 1... now command. How long does the log in take?
Quote:

I don't use any WLAN equipment, but I have to ask the others. Still Hamachi seemed to be running fine and smooth.

Thanks for the quick reply! I was one of those who never saw the game window, so I can't tell you if I'd like your work or not. Still those who tested it last week seemed pleased.

Let all players start the game from a terminal window:

java -jar JLeHavre.jar

(You need to change to the installation directory first.)

Maybe there are some exceptions during log in.
The log in usually takes some seconds, but I never had any problems with it.

Tried starting from the jar file and from the terminal and can't get it going.

Got the latest version of Java (This release updates Java SE 6 to version 1.6.0_13, J2SE 5.0 to version 1.5.0_19, and J2SE 1.4.2 to 1.4.2_21.), and have set it as first preference in the Java Preferences program (for applications).

This is the only Java application I'm having trouble with (am a Kingsburg and BSW user - among other Java applications). So I think I must be missing something in the instructions. I take it that other Mac users have had success with the instructions above? Looking for some further tips.

From your post I didn't get which java version you exactly have. You definitely need 1.6 to run the game. Get your terminal window running and type

java -version

If it tells you anything below 1.6, that's bad. As far as I know you need to do some manual updates to get 1.6 as Apple doesn't support 1.6 right away. That's at least what I've understood from other users telling me.

How do you get Hot Seat to work? The only way I could accomplish this is to open several instances of JLeHavre.jar and use one as a "server". If there is a less convoluted way of doing this, please let me know.

You're right, this is the only way. Le Havre was meant to be played via network from the beginning. My next version will allow single instance hot seat. But I haven't even started programming, yet.

Thanks for the very cool program.

My wife and I (in UK) are trying to play with my brother-in-law in US. My wife and I are obviously both on the same network at home and I can't seem to get this working with our two pcs.

I've tried wired and wireless.

The software works fine, until we try to use Hamachi. All latest Java and patches.

We can't play 2p (my wife and I on the same network, despite different ip addresses). We can play 2p with one of us in UK and the USA player. SO it's clearly an issue with us both being on the same network, and I'm assuming it's Hamachi and not the JLeHavre software.

Has anyone come up with or know of an workaround? (I'm not hugely savvy with software and networking stuff)

Thanks in anticipation.

James & Sharon

Yeah, sometimes Hamachi doesn't work like intended. It has especially problems with wireless networks (don't ask me why - I don't know!). The only thing I can say is I cross my fingers that you get the game going.

@all: Apropos, I finally started planning version 2. This time I'll put some work into planning the design before programming.

I managed to get it working.

Hope this helps someone else

James

My Marketplace caps at 2+2 resources, even if I have 3+ craft symbols. Hope this gets fixed in 2.0. Maybe I can top 260 then.

Love the game, thanks for programming.

The Marketplace works absolutely correct. The solo rules have been corrected after realease: In SOLO games (only), the Marketplace is limited at 4 goods. If you like, change this in the Settings Window.

Are there anyone on the Hamachi network willing to play Le Havre. So far I have joined all 4 of the BGGLeHavre network and no one shows up for the game at all. Ponton really did a great job creating this program. I love it. It is way faster than actual real game. Anyway, please join Hamachi network and please chat/ping me to play Le Havre.

cheers,

In case somebody gets confused: I think Eric was talking about JLeHavre 1.0 - there is no 2nd version (not yet). I'm always willing to play. However, the difference in time between Germany and Canada might be a problem, Eric. What's your time zone? I'm GMT+1 (until End of October we've got summer time here, so effectively we're GMT+2).

Sorry I feel like an idiot. I can't find the town's buildings. I am playing a solo game. I see the buildings that get built during the game but not the construction type buildings. What am I missing?

Henning

ps. Thanks for the program, you did a great job on it.

Tried a short game and the construction buildings show up fine. It is only in the solo long game that they seem to be missing.

Just got it to work on my Mac. As I understand it, Java 1.6 only works on Intel based Mac, not PPC. If you have Intel based Mac, go to application, utilities, Java preference, then drag Java 1.6 to the top to run it as default. Hope that helps.

Nice program!

Maybe just redo the copying.

1. Get the main files in Executables.zip
2. Overwrite the necessary files with those from the Patch04.zip
3. Finally, overwrite again with the files in Patch05.zip

Hello.. thx for putting so much wrok into this, im really looking forward to use this game, but I had trouble getting it to work. Maybe this will help others:

I use linux (Kubunt 9.04), with java version "1.6.0_16"

When i start the jar, I can choose "Join Game", but if i leave Bind Adress blank, i get "One player has lost connection".
If i use 127.0.0.1 i get this text:

muellert@schattenspiel:/crypto5/home/muellert/Desktop/JLeHavre$ java -Xmx256M -jar LeHavre.jar
[2009/10/14, 21:59.03] Ereignislog gestartet.

log4j:WARN No appenders could be found for logger (org.jgroups.JChannel).
log4j:WARN Please initialize the log4j system properly.

---------------------------------------------------------

---------------------------------------------------------
** view: [127.0.0.1:35808|0] [127.0.0.1:35808]

If I use a non-assigned IP in my network, it crashes.
I used ifconfig to find my real IP adress (192.168.2.100 in my case), and then the game stars. Works like a charm, thank you so much

Cheers,
Thomas

Maybe some Linux issues, I don't know. This behaviour never happened before. Sounds like you got it up and running. Have a lot of fun!

BTW @all: There is a bug with steel. Don't use it as iron. I'll need to fix it. Oh, and somehow in my last game the Town has built the Steel Mill, but the game somehow didn't set it as built and it couldn't be entered unless bought...

Yes, i got it figured out, but a fried on mine cant run it. He has the same problem, bun unlike me, he doesnt have a local area network adress (because he uses static IP "dialup"). He has the same problem like me, when we want to connect to online games, we get:
org.jgroups.ChannelException: unable to setup the protocol stack: Property assignment of bind_addr in UDP with original property value null and converted to null could not be assigned. Exception is java.net.UnknownHostException: Invalid bind address /192.168.2.101
Can someone confirm, if this game is working in linux and with network?
So far I can only play the solo version..
Cheers,
Thomas

I have found the solution to my problem....

As far as I know ( and tried )

OS X DOES NOT work like windows

... let me explain...

I've unpacked the main executables and images separatly.. then time to merge them together : so I drag the folder and drop it onto it's parent ( the "images 1" renamed to "images" and drop onto the "JLeHavre" folder)

-On a windows machine : New files in folder images within JLeHavre gets copied existing files gets overwritten...

-On my mac (all mac???) : the whole sub folder "images" gets deleted and replaced with the one I am trying to copy... so I end up with only the updated files.. and nothing else in folder

So I had to go file by file (or batches of), folder by folder and copy newer files in proper folder for it to work....

I hope this will help anyone having the same problem I had... please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong about OSx.. and how to fix this annoying behavior..

Hi Ravachol, yes, please, post the French files - I'm totally OK with this. There's no bug with Marketplace - check if you've got the bigger images in English, too.

Thanks for creating this great game Ponton.
But could you explain a bit more about the English images (I can't find them in the files section) ?

Or are the English images already included in the files (JLeHavre1.0_Images1.zip, JLeHavre1.0_Images2.zip, JLeHavre1.0_Images3.zip), so I only need to make a configuration change ?

THNX

You should upload it on the BGG,or get a rapidshare collector account.
Because this file has been downloaded ten times, (the maximum).

I downloaded all files, run the .jar, the game window comes up, I enter some details in (game name, user name, IP) then click Login and nothing happens. Same if I try to load a .sav game.
I use Java 6 update 17 on Windows XP.
First time I downloaded the game I got past this login screen, didn't complete the game just existed, then ever since I cannot get past this Login screen.
Any ideas?

Thanks

EDIT: found this fix on the other thread and used it

... I tried "127.0.0.1" (loopback) and it worked...

It's now working.

Bug report

Building the Yatch failed. Note: I may have misunderstood. The Yatch was already in town.

I entered the Wharf, the Yatch showed a build option. I selected the Yatch. My Iron ship was removed but I didn't get the Yatch. And it left me in the middle of the build ship action.

I completed the action by building a Steel ship. Then rolled back. My Iron ship did not come back.

Hope this helps you improve what is already a terrific rendition of Le Havre!

Cheers,

To newbies that haven't tried the game yet, it's great. I played many rounds without problem. This bug is on the fringe of the game.

Thanks, Larry. I've already heard about the two special ships being buggy, but I hadn't had the time to fix these bugs, yet. Just ban them from your games by changing the settings before the game.

Great conversion into Java!

Just wanted to bring light to a bug I ran into when dealing with the MSDagmar card.

2 Player Game
Round 14, about 1/2 till round end
MSDagmar had been sitting in town

I had purchased a luxury liner at the beginning of the round. Moving back into the wharf, I had the opportunity to get the MSDagmar (it had the build icon above it) but when I tried to build, it didn't do anything. I could select the option, but nothing happened.

I guess this is one of the other buggy cards now that I see you've recently responded to a similar issue with the Yacht. I'll remove them from the game like you mentioned.

Nonetheless, it's a ton of fun and much appreciated!

Hi Sean, I'm glad you have fun witht he game and I strongly apologize for the bug with the MS Dagmar. During playtests both ships have worked, maybe I've screwed something with some newer updates. I haven't had the time (or better: motivation) to chase hese bugs down. I promise to do something during the following two weeks.

I've found the bug and fixed it immediately. The problem was a missing text message in the language files. What a banal error!
Either wait for the update to be approved, or manually add the following line to your language file (English: 'lang/en.txt'; German: 'lang/de.txt'):

ENGLISH
logChangeShip <b>%s</b> swaps a ship of their own for: <b>%s (%d)</b>

GERMAN
logChangeShip <b>%s</b> tauscht ein eigenes Schiff gegen: <b>%s (%d)</b>

Nice program...

One minor rules bug I noticed messing around with it: in the Short Solo game, there should be a 2-value Wooden ship available for building/purchase, in addition to the one the player starts with.

First I'd like to say Great job!

Everything works and runs fine but I can't see the game cards in English. I've scanned this page lightly and can't find anything about it.

Is there a way to see the cards and the game board in English?

You've to check the file pages here. Some other geek has uploaded all the images in English. IIRC, there are 4 zip files with English images.

Here's the link: Final English version files for Le Havre Computer game 1,2,3,4 of 4

Thanks. It does. I've tried on my netbook.

The next big step I'm planning is to get the game resizable. My current problem are the images. With a super high resolution, all images are 80+ megabytes - way too much for Java to process.

Bug report (possibly fixed when I upgraded to LeHavre.class Nov.23 edition)

Solo game: If the Dunny comes up and all the build piles are empty, the game fails to finish the end-of-round transition to start the next round. GUI remains active, hovers still work, but you can't do anything because you can't take any actions.

= Obscure condition but restart is the only workaround.

Thanks for a great game! I've played dozens of rounds with no problems what so ever.
Cheers,
Larry robot

BUG report: we were playing 3 to 4 players via Hamachi. Then one player suddenly goes offline. He tried to rejoin but to no avail as the whole program just CRASHED. What do do? Should one just freeze and do not play a hand until the person comes back ONLINE and join back in when (s)he left off. The saddest part was it is like in round 12 of 17 when that happened. After tinkering for over 1.5hrs playing patiently to only come towards NO GAME END. Help.

ALSO, who is interested in joining my HAMACHI network group:

LeHavre-CN
pw: lehavre.

AND - if you are inactive...I will EVICT you.

I've fixed it. I forgot to think of this case. The new version (1.21 incl. expansion) will already contain the fix. I won't upload a fix for the old version (1.08).

Rejoining never has worked smoothly in the past. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. The main problem here is Hamachi itself. I know it's sad to have to quit shortly before the game ends. I'll try to look at that particualr part of the code again, but I can't promise any fix. This game of yours is lost - the new version will be incompatible with old savegames, so saving it for a future fix won't work. I'm sorry.

Nice program...

One minor rules bug I noticed messing around with it: in the Short Solo game, there should be a 2-value Wooden ship available for building/purchase, in addition to the one the player starts with.

No, there are no additional ships at start except your starting ship.

Perhaps this is a rule change from 1st to 2nd edition or something, but my (2nd edition) rulebook says:

"In the solo shortened game, players start with a 2-value Wooden ship card. An additional 2-value Wooden ship card is placed on the Wooden ships space on the game board."

LOL, you beat me. Actually, I've never played a short solo game before and must have missed that part while reading the rules. I'll fix that too with the new version. Anyway, no bug here, just a missing feature. THANKS!

Hi,

I had the same problem on Debian Sid (Linux):

elfstone0411 wrote:

---------------------------------------------------------

I used ifconfig to find my real IP adress (192.168.2.100 in my case), and then the game starts. Works like a charm, thank you so much

But this solution to use my real IP didn't work for me.

I found out, that the game bounds to IPv6 protocols, however it uses IPv4 address:
udp6 0 0 127.0.0.1:34999 :::* 3287/java

SOLUTION: Disable IPv6 in Linux

- it can be done dynamically (by root):
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv6/conf/all/disable_ipv6
- or for ever: edit file /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf - add there:
blacklist ipv6
- and then reboot.

I had a similar-sounding problem on my Mac that I solved by starting the installation again from scratch. The second time I used the command line (Terminal) and tar xvzf filename.zip on all the files to make sure I had no mistake in unzipping and copying them to all the right directories. I can't be sure, of course, that I had the same problem you do.

Does it still work for you? I am running java 1.6.0.17 on Mac OS X 10.6.3, and when I start up the game, it just hangs after loading the game board. I can still click on all the buttons that are still active such as the building stacks, the help window, etc. The game just does not start. I have tried installing it several times and the results are the same each time.

How did you use the command line to do the copying in the terminal on the Mac? The tar command does not seem to work on the zip files that are linked to in this post.

I imagine this won't be terribly helpful for you, as I use Windows XP, but I recently downloaded the game and it works fine right out of the box.

Well, I have the hanging problem on my Mac, and I get exceptions on my netbook with Ubuntu, so I guess Windows XP/Vista is my last resort. I would really rather not have to boot into Windows to play the computer version, but I guess I already do that for Civ IV.

You don't need to drag the disc. Juts double clic on the good/building you want to grab/use and that's it. After that, you need to clic on the yellow-orange button with "> > > >" symbols to go to next action, or you can clic on the "< < < < " symbols to undo your last action.

That was the first thing that I thought but as I saw the dates of the other files are 3 days ago and some parts are already uploaded, I thought I was missing something...

Good then! many thanks again!!

Just downloaded 1.24 yesterday and I am able to play solo but online on Hamachi I tried to start a game with one other person and we could link up but once the "Start Long Game" was selected the game would load only for the initiator not the other player (the other player would remain in the "ready" screen). Help?
Thanks for the awesome game Grzegorz!

I can't help a lot with Hamachi problems. Just try again. Some players don't seem to have any problems when playing online via Hamachi, others do have a lot of them. I can only wish good luck and am very sorry for my implementation. If I knew a little more about network programming, I'd make a Hamachi independant version.

There is no board and nothing to activate. Clicking and double-clicking all around the board produces... nothing! There are no discs to move or anything else to do.

??????????????????

Dave, this happened to me.

Make sure to get all FOUR of the English Image.rar files unzipped properly and in order (when you put them in your folder it may ask if you want to overwrite click yes). Before this I realized I had not been unzipping these Image.rar files correctly. Ended up downloading "Jzip" free download which worked like a charm.
Re-download everything and start over. Unzip in this order into a new folder:
Basic file -> (4)Image.rar files -> Class file

I'm having the same problem here. The rar files are not zip files. That is what's throwing me.

Hey, I don't know if I'm the only one having a problem with this, but hopefully someone can help.

I've been trying to download the files needed to play the game. I downloaded the Basic files and the Classes file and extracted them successfully into a folder, but when I try to extract the files from the image rars it says that the files are corrupt and I cannot extract them. Is anyone else having this problem?

I've tried using Jzip, and I've tried deleting everything and starting the process over and haven't been able to get it to work.

Any help would be great. Thanks!

All 4 rar files form a single entity and need to be unrared together, not one by one.

Bug report

+1 on the thanks for your excellent work Ponton!

A couple of quirks I noticed while playing the Solo Game:

1. the game won't let me use Charcoal in place of Wood as a building material (whereas I believe you should be able to sub any upgraded material for the raw one when building, e.g. should be able to use 2 Bricks to build the Bakehouse)

2. sort of the opposite problem - when I use Brickworks to convert Clay to Bricks, the game additionally allows "re-conversion" of Bricks to Bricks (costing 0.5 energy per brick and yielding 0.5 Francs). So for example if I have 11 Clay and 1 Brick and 2 Coal when I use Brickworks, the game is letting me convert 12 units, consuming all the Clay, Brick, and Coal, and yielding 6 Francs and 12 Bricks. This seems wrong to me - while I believe you should be able to sub Brick for Clay when building, I don't think this flexibility extends to conversions. (So also you should be able to re-smoke smoked fish or re-bake bread or re-slaughter meat or re-char charcoal, right? Or re-tan leather or re-forge steel or re- coke? Haven't checked how the game treats all these other conversions though...)

Cheers,

Guy

Both are per the rules. Charcoal can't be used as a building material, and bricks can always be substituted for clay, even when converting to more bricks.

Hayekian, as Haggis has already pointed out, both your issues are consistent with the rules. Only bricks and steel may be used as clay and iron, respectively. Note the design of the resource chits for bricks and steel - they say "(= clay)" and "(= iron)", respectively. No other chit says the same as no other resource may substitute another one (except francs always being food, of course).

Also, there is no limitation on what you use your bricks for as a replacement for clay. Yes, you may re-convert them to bricks. Also, you might re-convert steel to steel, although no sane person would do that. However, as no other upgraded resource than bricks and steel may be used as their basic counter-part, you can't re-smoke smoked fishes, re-coke coke, re-slaughter meat, re-backe bread, and so on.

Maybe I sound silly now, but how do you open 4 rar files all at once? I can't open more than 1 rar file in Jzip at the same time

Download all of them and save them in the same folder. Open any one of them (e.g. part1) and extract the contained zip file. Then unzip the extracted zip file to the game folder.

Thanks, but...
When I then extract the zip file of the next part e.g. part2 it says that the files are corrupt and I cannot extract them
(because all rar files contain a zip file with the same name?)

You can't extract the zip file of part 2 by itself. Basically it's one big file that's been split into four parts. If you open part1 in the right program (like 7zip or jzip or winrar or whatever), and extract what's inside, you'll get everything.

Thank you for nice game. I have one complain to this concerning image resolution. Please make the board and cards a bit larger so that labels of card could be easily readable - now it's almost impossible.

Concerning to dynamic resizing of board - wouldn't be better to make already prepared layout and graphics for resolutions 1024x768, 1280x1024 etc. and user could switch as he/she wants

Phew, got it. Looking forward to giving this a go it looks beautiful.

Though I spent 30min figuing out how to extract the RAR files, I've never done that before you may want to include some instructions on how to do that for dummies like me who need a bit of handholding in figuring that out.

Excellent, thank you, I may have to make a contribution, my wife and I played a 2 player game this afternoon and we really enjoyed it, thank you!

One thing I noticed. when I shipped on my final turn it seemed I got more money than I should have.

I shipped 10 goods worth 38 money, using 4 coal. And the game awarded me 50 money I can only guess, the game gave me the money for the coal that I used the energy with to make the shipment.

Not sure if this is a bug that is repeatable, but I thought I would make you aware.

Sorry my bad, just rechecked the math, added wrong. Program is right.

2 steel, 4 leather, 1 cattle, 3 coke

16, 16, 3, 15 = 50

You're very welcome, I consider it a bargain price!

If I may make one suggestion if you plan to do future versions, it would really be nice to be able to access the Round Summary Card during the game, to give you heads up of what is coming up. Maybe there is a way to see it Im not sure, but if not Id really appreciate being able to view that for reference.

Hi, I am tryin to start the game.

When I click the Jar, it open the log window. I type in a game name and my name, then click join...

the log window vanishes, but then nothing happens afterward.

Why do I need to double-check ?

The Overview card is the first card in the Town tab. I don't remember if I've already added a "detail" menu to it. This would be accessible via right-click. Hold the mouse over the card to get a tooltip as usual.

No idea what this bug is related to. Some very few people seem have to have it, most do not. What OS do you have?

this could be great but can someone compile or release a version that actually works. Doesnt run for me, tried opening it with version 1.6 and 1.509 and 1. jrel, with java javaw and javaws.exe

any chance of a version in proper format, like a standalone exe? I have the board game at home so no worries if not, I can wait. Was just hoping to check it out solo beforehand to get used to rules

java sucks by the way.
Totally appreciate your effort on the other hand

All right I admit it I'm an idiot. I don't think I have things in the right folders.

Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: main/LeHavre

I do not see a structure for the folders anywhere. Once I unzip/unrar things am I supposed to just flatten the folders so that all of the files are at the same level? blush

This is an amazing program! Thanks very much for taking the time to create it.

I'd like to inform you of a bug I ran into while playing a two player long game via Hamachi.

I used the Harbormaster building to remove my opponent from a building I wanted to use. That worked perfectly, but after I performed the building's action, the button to finish my turn didn't become active. I could use the redo button and tried that a few times but I kept getting the same result.

Any thoughts?

Hey there! None of the image.en files links are working for me. Whenever I download one of them and open with IZarc I get a popup that says "volume ID:0" with a text box with the file path and two buttons underneath ( ok and cancel, both of which do nothing)

any ideas? thanks, and I can't wait to play.

I'll see if I can make the game backward compatible. But IIRC I once tried and didn't succeed.

Is there any easy way to make the graphics larger, its hard to see some of the elements, I know that you can mouseover to see a larger card, but I would really love for the whole game display to be larger.

Thanks again for a great program.

In fact, there is a way to enlarge everything.

1. make bigger images yourself and replace the current one - IIRC, you can find every card of the game here on the geek in a bigger resolution

2. find "gui.txt" in the config folder and start editing it, i.e. fooling around so long until your game is playable with the bigger graphics

I haven't had the motivation to automate that process, yet. I might do sometime in the future, but maybe not now.

Ponton, I know you can play JLeHavre hot seat by opening up multiple instances of the program. But will the new version (1.25) allow hot seat play within just a single program? (Or does the program already do this...?)

Hi Steven. unfortunately, I haven't done anything about the ability to play hot seat in a single instance of the game. I may, however, consider this for a future version. Thanks for the suggestion.

BTW, German players may already make a little correction. I just noticed, the file "lang/de.txt" misses something. Search for "E2010", then add to the description: "(außer Stahl)". You'll notice the card text mentions this, but I forgot to add it in the language file.

English players, currently there is no English version of the Toy Fair card (E2010), but Klemens promised to create one soon. Once he has done it, I'll make it available for download. Until then, you need to play with the German card. I'm sorry for the inconvenience.

Hi,

I'm sure I'm doing something wrong, but I can't get the program to start at all. I've unzipped basic, then done the rar images thing (I followed the instructions above, and I've looked through the images, and having played the game before, I'm pretty sure they're all there, so I'm guessing I did it right), then done the images_addon, and finally the classes from Feb. 6 (v. 1.26 above). I looked at the folder list in the discussion above, and I have them all. I updated Java before trying to run. But when I double-click the JLeHavre.jar file, Windows starts working on something, and then... nothing happens. No window comes up, nothing. The hard drive goes for a while (maybe a minute) and then eventually just stops.

I thought it might be interference from my anti-virus stuff, but I've installed the same files on 3 machines: my desktop w/ XP, my sister's laptop w/ Vista, and my laptop w/ Windows 7. Each is running different anti-virus software.

Any ideas? Is it perhaps due to the new release? Should I try running v 1.25 and see if I get a different result? Or might it be the version of Java I downloaded?

Thanks for any help!

Hi Kevin, as you are the 3rd person having problems with it despite 143 people who downloaded and did not have problems or don't care to ask, I'll have a look at the problem.

I strongly recommend to try 1.25. If the problem persists, there might be something else wrong. Regardless, I'll help you get the game going. First thing I'll do is download my files from here and try to get it started.

Found the problem: Somehow I forgot to include two files in the new Classes release. You can fix this problem yourself easily:

- Go to the "config" folder of your game installation.
- Create a new file "lang.txt". Open it and type "en" (if your language is English) or "de" (if your language is German) and save the file. DO NOT TYPE THE QUOTES!
- Create another file "login.txt". You do not need to edit this file. It may be empty for the first time you start the game.

Then start the game and enter a game name and user name, and IP if needed.

Wow, that was quick! Thanks! And yes, that fixes it. I got the program to work perfectly just a few minutes ago.

Thanks for all your hard work on this!

btw, is it supposed to read v 1.25 up in the window title bar? I don't really care, as long as it works, but I thought you might care.

This is hard coded and I always tend to forget to change it. It may matter if you try to play the game against somebody who actually does have 1.25. The game might fail. Otherwise, there's nothing bad about it.

I think, that my market place does not work as it should.
If I could choose one of two special buildings, the program shows me one.
That would be at least a simulation of the DDR, but not of LeHavre.
It is the same Problem with special 037. If i should be able to choose of three special buildings, i just get one to choose.

What is the problem?

Screenshot? I don't have this problem. The only problem was the two/three buildings being too small. However, I never get only one unless there is only one left in the pile.

The UI for this is excellent, a real quality piece of work. I have so far only found one bug, however. Other than it saying ver. 1.25 (even though it should be 1.26), I found that the Special Building "Diner" expects incorrect input amounts and produces incorrect output.

The Diner requires 1 Wood, 1 Bread, and 1 Smoked Fish. In exchange for these 3 items, it gives 8 Francs, and can be done up to 3 times in a single action.

In the current version, the game allows 6x exchanges instead of only 3x, but is only granting 3 Francs per exchange, rather than 8.

Hope this helps. Keep up the great work!

This is a copy&paste error. You can correct it easily. Create a file named "buildings.txt" in the config folder. Type this into the file:

016_win 1
016_Gin 1
016_Fin 1
016_$out 8
016_Lim 3

Save that file. Re-start and the Diner should work correctly.

(1) Is it possible to save game configuration (buildings used and their order, Supply tiles, ...) after the game ends or while it still continues? I came across this issue when after finishing solo game I wanted to store the configuration for replaying that setup and to share it with a friend (so we can compare our results). (It could be safer to warn user before showing configuration while the game still continues as this reveals information (s)he should not have by the rules.)

(2) Could you add unlimited undo/redo, especially in solo mode?

(3) Is it possible the get entire game history? The "log" window seems to be limited and does not show everything from the start of the game.

(4) Maybe it is just me (my configuration) but after starting the game the window is always a bit to small and shows vertical scroll bar. Also it seems to not remember last position and size.

1) You can only save a pre-set configuration, i.e. one that you did yourself in the Settings Window. As I'm now working with another guy to do an online version and am already programming, I might consider creating a setup file. Shouldn't be too difficult.

2) Unfortunately no. Undo is already buggy enough and extremely dirty solution-wise. I won't mess any further with this. Not with the current code.

3) The log is saved automatically after you properly close the game. Look into your "logs" folder. You cannot access it in-game, however. If you want to have a longer log in the chat window, change this value in gui.txt: "chatMessageLimit" - set the value to anything higher than 15. Please note, extremely high values tend to cause lags towards the end of the game.

4) No, it doesn't remember last position and size. Anyway, you can't really re-size the window. Everything is fixed. And no, I won't mess with that. The online version is supposed to be resizable.

How is going the online version? Any prediction when will it come out? Will it obsolate the local version or are you going to maintain both? Thumbs up for the effort! If I could be of any use I will gladly help!

As of now, there's no release date. Just wait and see.
The local version will be maintained, but I won't fix any network related bugs after online release.

BTW, saving the settings isn't as easy to accomplish as I thought. Please try to save the game after setup and send it to your friend. He should be able to play the exact same game. There is and will be no way to get the setup information at the end of the game. I'm sorry.

You may consider sharing the code so I can have a look at it. Doubtful if I would do anything but still doesn't hurt to try. Yet it requires sharing the code which might not be what you want to do. If you feel like it notify me with GeekMail. If not then leave it.

Good luck with the online thing.

Check out Qzoom at http://mira96.com/2009/07/19/107/ which is a full screen zoom tool like the one in Mac OS X. You can zoom into the screen and out using customizable hotkeys or the mouse scroll wheel.

As for me, I'm struggling to run the game myself. I have Java 1.5 so I'll need 1.6 which is already obsolete. Which more recent versions will it work with? Should I download the latest? (Recommended Version 6 Update 27).

The PC-geek in me relishes the thought of massaging those file structures, bat files etc. etc. but for others perhaps a more user-friendly large self-extracting file hosted on a free download site would be an improvement. But don't take that the wrong way, you've obviously worked hard on this and I can't wait to play it!

I think I ran into the same issue, running 1.26. Played a few games, and the Marketplace worked fine in all of them except one. In that game, every time I used the Marketplace, it just showed me one of the special buildings. I neglected to take a screenshot, but will if it happens again.

It's worth noting that the single special building it showed me was centered in the pop-up window for the Marketplace. No idea if that helps narrow down what the issue was.

I'll take a screenshot in the future (if it happens again), although I'm not sure what it'd add to the debugging process.

Replying to myself, my problem was simply that I hadn't downloaded the Essen 2010 building images - after looking at the log files, that was the common building between my games in which this error occurs. A similar analysis of log files and game states might resolve other problems.
