My first Excel game. I would have loved to added graphics but it still gives me that 'cheese fix' when I have a few spare moments.

If anyone notices any glaring errors, please let me know. Or perhaps any suggestions for improving it.

Suggestions I have had so far are:

Add pictures for the tiles - Alas, way beyond my ability with Excel
Make a smaller play area.
Keep a permanent high score.
Improve the colour scheme.
Add a 'current score' option.

All opinions welcome.

Some help with this would be welcome. What do I need to do to get this to work? Do I need some specific software to open the file and use it? I tried downloading it, and nothing happened that I could make sense of.

Hi, thanks for downloading it. :-)

Firstly, it is an Excel file. So you will need Excel to use it. (It might work on OpenOffice but I haven't tried it)

Secondly, you must have 'macros enabled'. By default, Excel usually disables them from untrusted sources so you will need to enable them to play the game. It has been thoroughly check with Norton, AVG, Kapersky and I have had no complaints so... trust it. :-)

Any more problems, feel free to contact me via BGG.

Doesn't seem to work in Open Office due to the following error:

The following Basic script could not be found:
Library: 'Standard'
Module: 'PlaceTile'
Method: ''
Location: 'document'

I don't have Open Office installed anymore (no HD space!) so I can't really help with this.

The game MUST have VBscript enabled to work in Excel, so if there is something similar in Open Office, that might do the trick. (Fingers crossed)

One day, I'll try to make a Flash version of the game. (If Bran kindly gives permission again )

I looked it up and it has VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) and OOB (OpenOffice Basic), but I don't know what it would take to port it over.

Open Office 3.0 (and later) should have VBA support. (Note the word 'support' not 'compatability')
There are some programs out there that claim to convert (for a fee) VBA to OOB, but I have no experience with them myself. As much as I like to support open source software, I'm afraid I can't really help. I'm more than happy for anyone to convert it to OpenOffice and then they can take credit for it though.

I'm not too worried about it, but I look forward to seeing your Flash version, thanks for sharing your hard work!

Just a minor tweak - break down the Tiles Left info into the four types of tiles. That way, you could know how many Cats are coming up !!!

[EDIT: One more. It would be nice if it could create a file that would show the order the tiles came out and how you placed them.]

Cheers. It's been a while since I tinkered with the file.
I'll hope to catch a few spare minutes and probably set it on a separate page so people have a choice of playing with these hints.

I particularly like the idea of recording moves. I've always wondered about how to calculate the best possible score. This will give people a challenge to see if their score could be improved with the same tiles.
