The file says that the tiles are rendered to pdf at 92%. What does that mean? Do I need to re-size these before printing in order to ensure I get the correct size for play?
Typically, the "print scaling" field of the Adobe PDF print dialog is set to "shrink to fit" which will scale the PDF down as needed to fit the entire PDF page into the printable area of the physical page (this printable area varies by printer and print driver). However, if you choose "none" so no scaling occurs, the top or side edge of the image may be cut off. On my printer, "shrink to fit" causes the page to print at 97% of it's original PDF size.
My copy of 1830 (original edition) has tiles that are 1 17/32" flat side to flat side. The board has hexes of 1 5/8" flat side to flat side. John Tamplin's 18xx sets use ever so slightly smaller tiles at 1 1/2" flat to flat (IIRC).
Regardless, the easiest way to get the desired outcome is to print one of the pages to regular paper and then measure the resulting tile. The tile should not exceed 1.5" flat side to flat side and may benefit from being a tad smaller (to allow for cutting inaccuracies) which is why I rendered these at 92%. Printing on my printer yields: scaling "none": 1 15/32" scaling "shrink to fit": 1 7/16"
