These are the diffent steps I took to make my 10 stage Giro 2010 Cardgame:

1. The Giro D'Italia is 21 stages. Because I felt that the Cardgame is a much lighter version of the Giro-game I wanted to reduce it to only 10 stages. So some of them needed to be left out.

2. First of all, the 4 time trials had to go, since there is no point in doing that within the context of the Giro Cardgame. 17 stages left to reduce to 10.

3. Then I looked at the overview of the Giro 2010: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_Giro_d%27Italia.
there are 7 flat stages, 5 intermediate stages and 5 mountain stages. Reduced to 10 that meant: 4 flat stages, 3 intermediate stages and 3 mountain stages.
I used the same wikipedia page to pick out the stages I would use to follow the same flow of the real Giro.
1-2: flat
3: intermediate
4: mountain
5: flat
6: intermediate
7: mountain
8: intermediate
9: flat
10: mountain

4. I looked for the longest stage. 'Lucere to L'Aquila', with it's 256 km, would be the race of 12 steps, where the riders start with the maximum of 36 energy. The energy for the other stages was just then compared every stage I was going to ride with that maximum.
# steps for the stage = (# km for that stage/256) x 12

5. I used the stage maps on this site ( http://www.steephill.tv/giro-d-italia/) to convert the stage into cards. I didn't use any formula or anything, I just did it 'on sight' as I would call it. The biggest problem was of course the material. For instance: Stage 1: Amsterdam - Middelburg is completely flat, but there are no 10 flat terrain turn cards, so I had to include a nasty little downhill.

6. The sprint and energy cards were put on a spot where they 'felt' right within the flow of the race.

7. I changed a little part of Stage 7. I switched the downhill cards at the beginning and the end of the stage because the real race ends with a very long downhill phase.

that's about it
I'm very interested in comments or questions

greets

Tony
