I just tried this variant this past weekend. It was fun, but there were a couple of minor snags.
First, if one player gets dealt no Aces or Kings in their first hand, they spend their first 5 turns doing nothing. One of the players was dealt such a hand on the first round, so rather than forcing her to sit out the entire first hand, I made up a rule on the spot that says that each player starts the game with a piece already on their entry space. There are other ways the problem could be solved. The published game Dog has a rule where each player passes a card to their partner at the start of each hand, so in this case their partner could pass them an Ace or King. Another option is that if a player is dealt no Aces or Kings on their very first hand, they can discard any card to bring a piece on.
Another thing is that the rules say that landing on another piece sends it back to start. But it doesn't say that you can't send your own piece back to start. The rules also say you can't just discard a card that can be legally played, even if its play is detrimental to you, so we encountered a case where a player was forced to play her last card to move one of her pieces to send another of her own pieces back to start. Should there be a rule that says you can't send your own piece back to start? I guess it's fine either way, but it seems like a missing rule.
