readable_asop_v1.pdf (182 KB) (Log in or Register to download.)
This 29-page booklet reformats the text of the original 4-page Advanced Sequence of Play (ASOP) out to a full 22 pages, which makes the ASOP far more readable and easy-to-use. The text is fully searchable, of course, and bookmarks provide quick access when the document is viewed in Acrobat Reader. A new 6-page Appendix is also provided, which cross-references all of the rules citations within the ASOP.

Nice work, Jay. Thanks again! I couldn't agree more on your assessment of the Official ASOP. For myself, I had recently decided that one of the Pre-Game steps that I would include in my EOP for SK3 (whenever I can do it and get some eyes to review it) is to introduce the process of Checking Errata for the subjects of Scenario, Map(s), and Counters as a step prior to play. It would be assumed that the Rules and charts/tables available for play had already been erratacized. So, though it may not be official, I believe confirming the presence or abscence of errata for a play is an important step that should be included. Just my $0.02.

Several people have reported that the bookmarks within the PDF do not always work properly. I have not been able to reproduce this error, but it does seem likely that there is some sort of problem with the PDF.

This has no effect on anyone who simply prints out the file, and it is only a slight nuisance to those who access the file onscreen, but I will try to get this fixed (if I can ever figure out what's causing the problem!).

EDIT: The bug has been found; see the discussion here:

Jay, I'm seeing the same issue in Preview 5.0.2 in OS X 10.6.4. I don't care, though, personally, because this baby will get printed out, placed into plastic sheets, and nestled up against your ASL Phases Quick Reference pages.

Just thought you should know that there's one more person noticing the bookmarking issue. Other than that, fantastic work and thank you!

One thing I would love to see added would be some kind of color coding or symbol to indicate items that are PTO only, DTO only or Night Rules only.

I had actually considered doing something like that, but I eventually discarded the idea (at least for now).

A couple of points to consider:

* With this expanded formatting, it seems relatively easy to skip over items that don't apply to a given situation (if you're playing a standard scenario), or to not overlook an applicable item (if you are playing a DTO/PTO/Night/etc. scenario). So I'm not sure how useful this additional color coding would actually be.

* In looking over the Appendix, it's clear that a significant portion of the ASOP is made up of items outside the "core" chapters (A, B, C, and D). If all of those items were to be color-coded in some way, it could add a lot of visually annoying clutter to each page... I fear that it could be a case of the cure being worse than the disease.

For those who have seen the ASLSK rulebooks, the highlighting used in them is a good example of this type of color-coding. The highlighting makes it easy to see which parts of the rulebook are new/updated... but it also makes for pages that are visually cluttered, and rules that are not quite as easy to read as they could be.

I haven't had a chance to use this new version of the ASOP very much yet. As I do get more experience with it, I'll get a better idea of whether or not the lesser-used portions should be color-coded in some way. And, hopefully, if other players agree with Steve they'll take the time to add their comments as well.

Thanks for this Jay!

Quick question, on the top of page 6 you list exceptions to the one action limit in the rally phase. What do you mean by, "Recovery (A4.44) is not an action by a broken unit?"

Thanks again.

First, to clear up any possible misunderstanding here, I did *not* write that text; it's found on the official ASOP in the 2nd ed. ASL Rulebook.

As for what it means... it does seem like a nonsensical exception at first, because broken units cannot make recovery attempts. But, remember that a SMC can attempt to recover a SW/Gun from a broken unit.

If a SMC attempts to recover a SW/Gun from a broken unit, the exception tells us that this does not count as an action by the broken unit, so the broken unit would still be eligible to make a rally or self-rally attempt later in the RPh.

Awesome job, Jay!
Now, didn't I help you with this several years ago at your shop? Hmmm...I wonder why my name is missing from the the credits.......?

Seriously, an excellent job!
