Thanks for posting this. Two questions:

1. When you place a well on a land hex because of famine, I assume you can still build on that hex in later turns? Or does the well marker make the famined hex unusable for the rest of the game?

2. What happens to wells in the Dignitary area that are displaced by huts? Are these wells removed from the game or do they become part of the game well supply?

Thanks!

Answer#1: The space is unusable for the rest of the game (the well marker stays on the hex). This was a key component of the design which strongly directs the player to spread out. The game was very stagnate until I added this little mechanic.

Answer#2: They become part of the game supply. This is a very important item to take note of. If the game is forced to remove the huts from the dignitaries due to famine, the player cannot fill those spots on the dignitiaries (you must displace a hut marker to take a dignitary space). It is better to occupy the dignitary space to displace the hut marker so that the game can use it then the other way around. Improved scoring depends on how well you manage the well markers.

Too many clumped well markers due to famine can create a road block that makes expansion more difficult.

First attempt (using "challenging" rules): 60 points - game loss.

Definitely some brain-burning moments. I came very close to a premature game end due to the "empty spaces in the Dignitary area" rules, but I was able to save myself and make it through the entire game. Unfortunately, I lost anyway!

There is a delicate balancing act that you need to create based on what you know in the coming season. This will aid in the limiting of famine hexes and the pressures that the dignitary area can cause.

Sometimes I just want to negate the point loss at the end of each era but often this limits what I can do later. Getting a 2nd ziggurat as soon as feasible will aid in your expansion (even if it is not that far from the 1st) and help in gaining points at the expense of the dignitaries. You just cannot do this too often.

Challenging rules from the start ... glutton for punishment?

If I'm gonna lose, I might as well lose BIG.
