Monopoly_Deal_FAQ_1-2.pdf (98 KB) (Log in or Register to download.)
FAQ 1.2 updated 4/11/11. All answers verified by HASBRO multiple times. This FAQ covers questions not covered by the official FAQ or rules sheet. This version corrects an error regarding houses and adds some minor things. All questions have been asked of HASBRO 2-3 times. After finishing this version I submitted the entire FAQ to HASBRO to see if anything was wrong. They confirmed that the information was correct.
Screen shot of e-mail:

Official FAQ:
http://www.hasbro.com/monopoly/en_US/discover/faq.cfm
(At the bottom under regular Monopoly.)

**Edit 4-27-11**
Q - Is it true that if a player gets a house as
part of a payment and he doesn?t have a set to
play it on, that it stands alone among his
property until he can play it on a set?
A - Yes

Q - If you play a house as an action does it
retain its monetary value therefore is it able to
be used to pay a debt? (Rent etc...)
A - Yes, you may pay rent with a house or a
hotel.
**These two are now suspect, see thread linked below for more info**

I still don't believe that the House/Hotel related rules make a ton of sense.

Did they cover whether stealing a monopoly steals the attached houses/hotels?

With regards to it being +4 not +7? I agree that it is not spelled out in the game and I think it is natural to assume that they stack when reading the cards. However in my communication with Hasbro and others I have seen on the forums they have maintained that it is +4. That being said it wont kill the game to house rule it otherwise, It will make the combo more devastating but one could argue that getting a hotel out on a full set warrants the advantage. I play with the +4 personally.

Yes! They cover that in the official FAQ:

"Q - IF I STEAL A FULL PROPERTY SET (USING A DEAL BREAKER), CAN I STEAL ANY HOUSE AND HOTELS THAT ARE ON THAT SET TOO?

A - Yes. You can steal all of the Property cards in the set and the House/Hotel cards too!"

The text on the Deal Breaker card explains this clearly (at least it does for me):

Steal a complete set of
properties from any player.
(Includes any buildings.)

It's possible that I have a newer printing of this though... an older printing might not have this text.

The rule clarification in the FAQ doesn't follow from this game's rules, but it does follow from how plain vanilla Monopoly works: There, you don't build hotels until you've built four houses, and then the houses are replaced by the hotel.

**Edit. New version is posted.**

I am currently in the process of updating and double checking this FAQ. Version 1.2 will be up as soon as I get a few more answers. There is a thread in the rules section where I am asking for rules issues. Please contribute if you know of any.

Of note version 1.1 is wrong about houses/hotels staying around after the set is broken up. They go to the bank. I have further clarification from HASBRO now.

Houses and hotels are hot item for us. We have two house rules:

version a) houses and hotels can be reorganized even from your cash back onto property sets or from property set to property set.

version b) houses and hotels must be played onto a property set or into cash. If you are paid a house or hotel that was from cash, it stays as cash. If you are paid a house or hotel that was on a property set, you may put it onto one of your property sets. You may reorg houses and hotels from one property set to another property set.

I prefer Version A because it's flexible, simple, keeps them from being underpowered cards that never get used, and it's far less wordy.

There is a flow that is constant save one exception.

Cards go from hand -> table as property or as bank. They stay in that state with the exception of houses and hotels that are on a legal set and then that set is broken up. These got to your bank. You receive cards in the state they were in when paid to you.

Clint, does your FAQ INCLUDE the official FAQ? Or do I need both?

You would need both. I considered putting that FAQ into a separate document here because it is lumped in with the regular monopoly FAQ and sometimes doesn't like to load at all, but I didn't know how acceptable that would be. Here is a link to it.

Does using the Forced Deal card mean the trade has to be of equal value? For example, if I use the FD card and want to take my partners Boardwalk card valued at 4, do I have to give him a property valued at four as well?
