Here's a 2/3 size variant of Tikal that seems to work pretty well. Gives you the same essential gameplay but only 2/3 of the length, so it doesn't wear out its welcome.
We just played the regular rules last night & by the end we were all wishing it had ended after the third volcano. We played the auction version, I won & we could all see that the last couple rounds just increased my lead. I could see shortening it by just calling the third volcano the end scoring.
