Streamlined Circus Maximus.pdf (590 KB) (Log in or Register to download.)
For over 20 years I've been running large chariot races using Avalon Hill's Circus Maximus and 15mm miniatures in an 8-foot long scale hippodrome. Over time, I've streamlined some of the old AH rules to speed up play for large groups. Here are my collected changes to the game in one 2-page document.

It seems clear that this wonderful game needs some update. Yours is a good starting point (in fact I thought the same about points 1,2 and 6... but I will not denounce you for plagiarism ).
I would add to cap the extra speed that can reach the horses when whipped, to avoid reaching "ludicrous speed" (cf. Spaceballs), with a maximum limit of 6.

Speeding *up* a game was never an issue with us — plus, that would have eliminated one of the greatest crashes ever, during a convention game when some kid took the inside lane and set his speed to 8.

Unfortunately, he was drawn last, and by the time he moved, 4 other teams had passed him and whipped his horses, giving him a grand total of 28 speed in the 8 lane.

Damn, that was a good laugh
