oddjobs_bigbuildings_HQ.pdf (1.51 MB) (Log in or Register to download.)
A small expansion that allows you to "invest" your colonists into a work regimen to grant a series of small bonuses. Also included are two new large buildings that are independent of the expansion.

300 dpi high quality version with one small clarification: Navigator may only be used once per Captain phase.

Hi. This expansion looks great, but for some reason, the term "Odd jobs" doesn't sit right with me, because, when writing instruction sheets that account for this expansion, things like this don't flow well: "If a player has the surveyor odd-job occupied, they may search through the discard pile and select one they desire from there". It seems to me that a one-word substitute would be better. I'd suggest "Assistant", but feel free to use something else (a thesaurus might help here).

I'd also suggest that, since the word "Bank" is written in big letters across the place on the game board (not yours, the one that comes with Puerto Rico) where the money is kept, that you rename yours to "Investment house", "Mutual fund", "Superannuation", or something similar.

In one place, you misspelled "Cathedral" as "Cathedeal" (in the Cathedral section, last mention before the examples).

I must say, though, that between this and your other buildings, it looks like you've produced some of the most worthwhile fan expansions.

Thanks .

I thought I'd point this out to you:

http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgameexpansion/69178/haiti-fan-...

If you made a separate "Expansion" page for this odd jobs thing, then it could get listed in the Expansions section for Puerto Rico (like the above), rather than just disappearing in amongst the files.

HTH,

To clarify: the ability granted by the Navigator can only be used once per Captain phase.

Sounds good, but I figure if people really like it enough, someone will make it.

I see what you mean. It may be a bit too late to rename the expansion, but hopefully after players have become acclimated with the rules, they'll be familiar with the mechanics more than the bizarre name. The name was partially inspired by an Arkham Horror character. I thought it was fitting because you're essentially putting unemployed people (who might otherwise wind up on indefinite siesta) to work doing various small tasks.

Ugh. This building was inspired by the San Juan card, as are nearly all my buildings. Obviously, San Juan does not have a doubloon bank. Well since my expansions aren't meant for beginner players, hopefully there will be no confusion...

Thank you! It's been fixed and a new version has been submitted. The new version also includes the clause that a player can only use the Navigator's ability once per Captain phase.

Thank you again! Yes, I've found that I'm much better at expanding upon brilliant ideas than developing my own from scratch (part tried-and-true element, part "limits encourage creativity"). PR definitely lends itself well to custom components with very little effort involved, as opposed to DOOM or Descent (in which you have to make your own figures or design entire scenarios) or Arkham Horror (Chris Jennings has mercifully designed a genius program that can make high-quality custom components) or Agricola (getting custom cards to match the style of the official ones so that they blend in is a task unto itself).

I definitely like this expansion and I'll be sure to try it soon. It sounds really cool. I'm eager to find out how it influences the game dynamic.

I have a couple minor suggestions. The name "Artisan" doesn't seem to fit the job description. The artisan sounds more like a migrant worker, drifting in seasonally and taking whatever work is available.

Also, the name "Navigator", while not bad, seems imperfect for the role. Takes a barrel during shipment and stashes it in supply? Sounds more like a smuggler to me!

What do you think?

I'll be sure to let you know how my first game goes with your new expansion! Thanks for sharing!
