The Adventurers Variety Cards V1.pdf (3.30 MB) (Log in or Register to download.)
My son and I have been thinking long and hard about how to expand the re-playability of The Adventurers, and we came up with the cards included in this file. At the start of each game, simply draw two cards at random, and apply the effects described to every player for the length of the game. Each game is now different, and has slightly different challenges. There are some very simple little effects, and some whoppers, including some killer combos if they come up together! We have found that this changes the game just enough to make it interesting to play again...

Nice job, we'll apply this variant in our next game.

Thanks for your comments, everyone. We've played a few games with this variant now, and it looks pretty solid. We haven't used all of the cards by any means, but the ones we have used have been fairly balanced and thematic. If people do play with this variant, I would appreciate feedback and comments on any improvements that could be made to any of the cards (the Native Tribe and Poisonous Snakes are two that springs to mind - maybe a little too harsh?).

I like elephants. I like how they swing through trees.

These are terrific, David. I just picked up this game after playing it a few times here and there. I know my girls (8 and 5) are going to flip over this (they are big Indiana Jones fans and press-your-luck gamers), but this will help add some variety after we've played a number of times.

If you don't mind, I'd like to pretty these up a bit and put them together to make an Artscow deck. I may add a few more, too. I wonder if there are any other types of variant cards we can make to add up to 54 for a whole deck?

Poisonous Snakes, no, because you know ahead of time that they might affect those types of treasures and you can always choose to discard them if you're worried about that. But Jungle Tribe doesn't seem to work because if you know that's the case, then you'd be silly to hold on to any treasures of that value. But if you just change that one to function like the Snakes (roll a die for each 4-5 treasure you have and die on a 1), then I think it would be fine because again it's your choice and your risk. This game is all about the risk and you can't take it too seriously if you end up getting offed by snakes or jungle tribes at the end. But they are great thematic fits, as are the others.

These are great, and we've used them a number of times.

Just as an aside, however, on card "Valuable Treasure," the treasure in the alcove is actually worth 9 points. 14 points for picking a lock makes the game a race to get there!

Not to quibble, but on page 4 of the rules, the set-up picture shows it to be the "Value 6 Lock Picking tresure". Backed up in step 14 of the set-up on the next page.

That was one fo the main reasons for this particular card - not enough people thought that value 6 was worth the risk, so I added one in to make it more worthwhile...

Just bought the game last week. Played it before. Love the idea of these cards and will print them out when I get home today.
I would love an Artscow version.

And I was thinking of making the ending cards a deck of their own.
Maybe 10 cards. 4-5 nothing happens.
1 snake in a box. Like above.
With a chance to live or die.
2 tribe. Tries to kill you if you have a certain treasure.
You do get a chance to escape.

Plus 3 others.
