powergridmat-v1.pdf (4.59 MB) (Log in or Register to download.)
I made the following mat originally because I did not care for the paper money and wanted an alternative means of money counting. I expanded the mat to include three things:

1. Three spaces for placing your power plants as you purchase them. There is a fourth space that includes the payments, though this space can also be used for a fourth power plant in a two-player game.

2. Elektro Counter Board: Instead of using money, there are two sets of counter spots: one ranging from 0-9, one ranging from 00-190. To keep track of your money, put one counter in the single digits and one in the multiples of ten (so, for example, if you have 57 Elektro, you'd put one in the 7 and one in the 50). Slide them up and down as necessary. The spaces are designed to be used with the houses included in the game (since you are unlikely to use them in most games with more than two players), but any small (1 cm) counter or chip works.

3. A brief summary of the turns. (Between this and the fourth power plant space above, you won't need to use the summary cards included in the game.)

Simply print the mats, cut them to 6x9" (which fit nicely in the original game box), and laminate them if you are so inclined.

Wherever possible, I tried to maintain the aesthetic of the original, using the original fonts as I could and matching the colors to the downloadable rules guide. Rights to the original images remain with the publishers.

Comments and suggestions are welcome!

Looks great, but isn't money supposed to be hidden?

I don't think you necessarily need to. The rules don't seem to specify, and I generally played it with money on the table. Since all the ways of gaining or losing money (auctions, buying resources, bureaucracy) are done in full view of other players, it's pretty easy to determine how much money people have anyway.

The official faq on the developer's website clarifies that the default methodolgy is for hidden money. But whatever works for you is fine too.

The boards look great.

If anyone has used these, please elaborate your gaming experience. I am curious how people liked the Electro-Counters. My game group is a "money-hidden" group. I don't know if they could be swayed.

Great work on these boards -- I really like them!

If I can offer one suggestion, I'm worried about the fiddlyness of counters resting on these boards. One method that works nicely for tracking numbers is two sliding clips (like paper-clips) on the edges of the board -- Monsters Menace America uses this method to great effect for tracking health on various monsters.

Edit: As I think about it again, that might be a problem to easily move the sliding counters on the edges if there are power plants sitting on the card. I think I'll try using these as-is, and report back to you.

Thanks for posting these!

These player mats are great!
Beautiful and handy!
We always play power grid with visible amounts of money.
So they are suitable for us.
The game was faster without the continuously money exchange with the bank.

Thank you Nersi!

Thanks, Nickos! I appreciate the feedback! I know the visible money isn't for everyone, but it's nice to know the mats are helping people out who play that way.

Clint, I'd be interested in seeing what your experience with the mats has been too.

The only drawback I see of this is that it would make it easier to make mistakes in amount of money (accidentally or on purpose). I've seen many times the game comes down to 1 electro that could have gotten someone the city to win the game. I like the idea of the mat integrating spots to put power plants and the turn order summary and the payment schedule for the plants. Its also thematic and worth my thumbs up.

The reason money is hidden is because otherwise it could extend the game and turn it into an AP mathfest. The last couple/few turns could come down to everyone looking at the amount of money someone has, bidding in the auction 1 electro over what someone can afford to pay, and knowing exactly if they need to try for the 15 cities this turn even though they can't power them all, or wait for next turn (instead of gambling if the other player can end the game this turn). Now many gaming groups are probably not that competitive and calculating, but just having a blanket game rule about hidden money helps prevent that possability from occuring.

Hide the amount of money
Question: Are you supposed to hide the amount of money you have?

Answer: The rules are not explicit on this point. You should play with hidden money, to prevent AP in the last (couple of) turn(s).

What?!? Power Grid isn't supposed to be an AP mathfest? I haven't played a game of PG that wasn't yet.

I love this little board, I'm going to bring it out the next time I play Power Grid.

As for hidden money... I play with pencil and paper, writing down my current amount of money, then working backwards from building.

I wish I had the design skills to make a neat PG wallet to just stash my money and keep it invisible to the other players. A calculator cover would be nice, too, because calculators come out at our PG table at times.

Glad you like it! I was debating making a small screen of sorts to hide the money from players around the table, if people think that would be worthwhile...

I made some screens to hide our poker chips. I'll post them this weekend.
