After some thought I know now why you use poker chips. You put two bags or boxes in the middle of the table to put the Mission votes into. Yes this will speed up and make more secure the secret identities.
That's actually how the Ancient Greeks did their jury system - two tokens, one signifying "guilty" and one "not guilty". Then they simply dropped one token into the box signifying that that was their choice, and the other into a discard box.
