Puerto Rico 2P Variant.doc (35 KB) (Log in or Register to download.)
Disclaimer - I wanted to try playing Puerto Rico with my hubby instead of waiting for 3 or more players so I decided to combine the official Alea 2P variant with recommendations from the Fernori 2P variant from BGG. Play and winning is as per the original (not official variant) game rules for multi-players. Kindly geek-mail your feedback or amendments (if any) as I’m relatively new to PR game so your expert advice would be much appreciated. No ill-intention. Just trying to be helpful by combining both variants & sharing with everyone here. Happy Gaming!

The fernori variant is essentially the same as the official Alea variant, just with the following modifications:
1. use 3 & 5 & 7 capacity ships, instead of 4 & 6 capacity ships
2. 3 space trading house, instead of 4 space trading house
3. 70 VPs, instead of 65 VPs
4. Governor chooses 3 roles and opponent 2 roles per round (remaining 2 each get a doubloon), instead of 3 roles each (remaining 1 gets a doubloon)

Having the Governor choose 3 roles and opponent choose 2 roles is the most common amendment of the Alea variant, and can be dubbed the "Craftsman Angst" variant because it adds tension to choosing Craftsman at the end of a round. Its main advantage is that it eliminates the back-to-back roles that result from the Governor Effect. The Kungfro variant is another version of this Craftsman Angst variant.

I'm still hoping that the person who posted it (Bruce H, aka fernori) will post some justification for his other suggested modifications to the Alea variant.

For a more detailed overview and analysis of the official Alea variant, along with a description and discussion of other two-player variants like the one in this file, see this article:

Just as an addendum, the Alea variant does not have a random building selection to start the game.
