Excellent guide for newbies such as myself -- thanks for posting it!

The one thing I might add / stress is the importance of the occupations and minor improvements (especially if a number of them work well together). These cards enable players to take a nonstandard path through the beginning of the game, and this in turn helps them avoid the fierce competition that exists for certain resources.

Great guide, though, and you brought up a number of things I hadn't thought of.
