GP rules edited and clarified.docx (36 KB) (Log in or Register to download.)
Boy, are the rules as written bad! I usually think such cries are exaggerated, but in this case its true. Large parts of the rules for Ottomans or Habsburgs are totally unclear without the FAQ.
So, I have re-edited and altered the rules using the FAQ. I have taken out the examples and historical statements to leave just the rules. Obviously a first time player should also use the examples from the original rules. Where a question had no answer in the FAQ I have my own answer in red. Also in red is a minor point different to the FAQ. The FAQ says money should be limited to what comes in the game. That makes no sense to me, especially as it does not say who gets their full income and who does not if it is about to run out.

And the older you get, the fewer things you really love. And by the time you get to my age, maybe it's only one or two things. With me, I think it's one.

Works OK for me.

Also I was wondering if you could justify the rules you added in red in addition to the unlimited money rule:

Quote:
The only thing that can be directly traded between players is money. Money can be given to another player at any time.

Players wanting to trade money (for favours I'm presuming) hasn't come up in any of the games I've played. I suppose there's no harm in allowing it but I'm just wondering if you added this rule since trading isn't explicitly disallowed in the rules.

Quote:
Cossacks that were purchased by a player will also fight, even if now alone

I thought there was a rule about not attacking with Cossacks unless you had troops as well. Are you just treating defending as not attacking & therefore Cossacks can fight invaders? Part of me doesn't want to allow this rule but then I can also see why you might want it. It also doesn't seem that thematic as I suspect the Cossacks wouldn't want to get involved...

I'd love to know your thoughts.

Thanks,

Ben

Trading money for favours is a useful oil to diplomacy in this game. It works in favour of a more graduated and nuanced co-operation, which is a good thing given the many temptations towards selfishly screwing around with the collective future of Poland that exist in the game. Since you lose VPs by giving money away it is not going to be indulged in wildly. You can also go for extortion of money by threats... It adds a vital dimension in my opinion.

Do Cossacks help defend if alone? - this was a question left open in the FAQ. I decided to say yes - if made loyal by purchase then they function as a border defense, as was their historical role.

I think I should have added something else. Reading the mapboard and the original playsheet, and thinking about history, it seems clear that you can only ride with the royal Polish army to relieve Vienna in phase 12 (Poland Fights Back) of turn 3 (whereas the original rules don't specify, suggesting that it could be in phase 12 of turn 3 or 4). I am playing it that its only in Turn 3.

Yes....the compressed file downloaded ok. After the files were extracted I took the largest xml file (219kb named 'document') to be the one to open. It opened in Windows Explorer ok but in xml code...I couldn't get Explorer to translate this. Could you not convert your work done into a pdf file?
