dominioncard2.3.pdf (5.91 MB) (Log in or Register to download.)
Version 2.3 – Updated to incorporate the Complete and All-Encompassing Dominion FAQ by Nick "PunchBall" Knutsen. Also, new section "Reading a Card" with a chart and detailed description of each part of a card. In addition, there are more links throughout, many edits, table of contents has page numbers, font sizes have been changed throughout to improve readability, and rules sections have been expanded and rearranged.

This document includes all expansions through Hinterlands and Governor (Year End 2011). The next edition will feature the Base Cards expansion.

Compiled for the first time in one place, this rules document takes all the rules and rulings for cards created since 2008 and puts them in one place, reorganized to make sense. Most importantly, all Kingdom cards' game text with their descriptions and are included in alphabetical order, with footnoted secret histories for every card. So if you are sick of toting around sixteen rules booklets and trying to find what "Duration" means, its all in here.

Note: This is the sixth release of these rules. The majority of the errors have been found. However, I am certain there are still many things that could be improved. Please post all corrections, suggestions, and comments on this thread. This document will be continuously updated for new expansions and major edits as they become available or noted. To all those who have helped with this document, thank you.

LOL! That was oddly probably the first reason I wanted to make this, followed by the poor chose of Apple Chancery or whatever font is used in the official rules. Arial and Copperplate Bold seemed much more readable.

Hey Derek, great CAR.
I just flew over the first few pages and only reading a few bits so far but here's 1 thing you might want to change at the bottom of page 5.

Quote:
Each player counts up his victory points on the cards in his entire Deck (which includes his hand and his
Discard pile).

you could add the following few words right after :
Quote:
and the victory points tokens on his player mat (if playing with Prosperity)

Keep up the good work thumbsup

Edit: and at the bottom of each page it says 'Ruled' instead of 'Rules'.

Thank you Player77. I added both your suggestion and your correction. I'll wait to reupload for a few more edits first. I'm sure there are a few still out there! I also added you to a "Guest Editors" section added after the "Personal Credits". If anyone else wants a mention, find something to edit!

Since you have explicitly got permission to do this from Jay and Donald, I think you should state that here very clearly (I assume it is also in the doc, which I have not downloaded yet). It makes it a 'better' or 'more important' document in some way if it has been blessed by them.

A really nice piece of work for 1.0. I would like to see pics added to break up the black and white text. I know that is planned at some point. Personally, I like teaching the game A,B,C,D(Draw) instead of A,B,C. It seems to be a bit clearer for newbies.

Note: Heading at bottom of page 8 should read "Differently Named".

Thank you AnnuverScotinExile. I added the disclaimer above beneath the notes section. Hockey Mask, thanks for the suggestion. I added the extra phase, even if it is unofficial, and separated that portion from the Clean-up Phase section. Hopefully it helps rather than hinders since it deviates slightly from the official rules. Also, corrected "Differently Names" to correct language. Both of you have been added to the credits page.

I'll add pictures. Definitely need the basic icons as well as some pictures of tokens and whatnot. I'm still debating if I want to include photos of the actual cards. It seems mostly unnecessary but there are a lot of pages of black and white...

I vote no on pictures of cards. It eats up space and ink and adds little. I prefer the functionality of raw text.

If you can avoid it, keep card descriptions from spanning multiple pages, See Black Market for the worst offender. It seems like the expansion should be listed in the section with the card text and cost, probably right under the name.

This is awesome.

I actually agree with most of this. There really is not reason to include the card photos. Other images such as icons I need to add in and I am planning to add an entire components section which will include expansion information and icons. I also need to show what things like potions, victory point icons, and treasure icons look like.

Quote:

I tried to avoid the multi-spanning descriptions but it increased the length of the document by nearly 10 pages. Ugh. Another option that would use less space is to separate the card descriptions into two columns. It probably would still span across multiple pages but the descriptions would appear more concise. All the text in those sections are already in size 9, I believe.

Quote:

I could but I find the expansion info unimportant considering most people downloading these rules have the majority of the expansions. But I'll check other spots in the descriptions for them.

Thank you so much for this. I just started playing Dominion in the last month and this sort of thing was on my mind to do almost immediately. Saves me the work now.

Two things: I would vote for pictures, (although that would seem decided on already,) and I would appreciate a more prominent way of differentiating cards from various expansions. It could be by placing the set up with Type, Cost and Text or via colour or font, but I would like something that pops out a little more.

Thanks again.

It's not that people don't have the expansions, but if you're looking for cards that express the themes of a particular set, a way to draw the eye to the distinction would help in scanning quickly to find the ones you may want to examine more closely.

To be honest, I'd vote yes on the pictures.
My game is the German version and with pictures in it, it's easier for me to recognise the card within a second. I'm sure this is the same for people who bought Dominion in Dutch or Spanish or in whatever languages the game is published.

Update: Just switched all the Basic, Kingdom, and Prize card sections to columns. Totally fixes many problems and saved 10 pages! It was awesome. Basic and Prize is now on one page each. Pictures are even less of an option now, though. There just isn't space for them and I still think not having pictures of each card is better for size and printing's sake. I will come back to this after other things have been resolved. I still have to go through each Kingdom card section to try and keep card info on the same page. I will also try and resolve the expansion info problem. I'll see what I can do about keeping that info together. As of the moment, though, I am trying to keep the text color-free for people who choose not to print this document in color (like me). Color text just comes out crappy grayscale and that doesn't help anyone.

Version 1.1 is now up! Here are the major changes:
* Added table of contents
* Added components section which includes the expansion descriptions and the expansion icons
* Made all card sections into columns to decrease page length, increase amount of text on page, and decrease amount of roll-over text onto next page
* Added small expansion icons beside every single card description and removed "Expansion: " from the bottom of the descriptions
* Separated Publishing Information from Credits section

Secret History will be added to the August release. Still haven't added color images of anything to the rules, though I still plan to include the images for treasure, victory points, potions, tokens, and perhaps a few other things. Definitely decided against including card images, though, despite people who wished for the contrary. It will increase the size of the .pdf to more than 100MB (which is undesirable) and the cards will still be impossible to read. I am thinking of implementing one color-specific option to help in quick-searches: changing the text of special cards. I'd make Treasures Black-outlined Gold, Victory cards Green, Reactions Blue, Durations Orange, Curses Purple, and Attacks Red. That pretty much covers all the primary colors and the types of cards, I believe. Prizes are in their own section, but I may make them a different color as well. I'd still outline the text in black, though for those choosing not to print in color.

Again, any edits please feel free to inform me about. Comments and suggestions are welcome as well.

The columns look much beter and the symbols really help a lot. The Envoy symbol looks a bit squashed for some reason. It and the Black Market symbol should be reversed so they are in the same order as written early on in hte set descriptions.

Thank you so much!!!

Three notes:

on page 1: In the Seaside section, "rat- infested" needs to be closed-up to "rat-infested".

Page 15: Black Market is missing "+2 Treasure" in the Text section.

Page 24: Library is missing the rest of its text after "Draw until you have 7 cards in hand." "You may set aside any Action cards drawn this way, as you draw them; discard the set aside cards after you have finished drawing."

Looks good.

Found a couple typos on Page 4 -

Under 2010 Promotional Card (Stash)
it has
! 1 Randomizer (placeholder) cards
(one of Stash and one blank)

Should be
2 Randomizers....

Under 2011 Promotional Card (Walled Village) it has
! 1 Randomizer (placeholder) cards
(one of Stash and one blank)

Should be
(one of Walled Village)

Hmm, and I guess it's a design choice, but I'd put Young Witch alphabetically at the end rather than next to Witch

Version 1.2 not available! I found a bit of spare time before leaving so decided to spend all of it to finish up the next version.

Here are the major changes:
* History of the Dominion Cards section added
* Footnotes containing the history of each card added
* Card information for each card is now on one page – no more need to flip to the next side
* "Type" category has been removed and moved beside the name of the card in bold caps-lock. This will make it much easier to see the type of card on the fly
* Table of Contents updated
* All edits suggested since last version added

Thanks for all the help everyone. I really won't be uploading a new version until August now, but this would should be pretty close to a final version (until Walled Village description comes out). The histories information did add about a dozen more pages, but that's not as bad as I was expecting. Still, Section 8 needs quite a bit of work and I didn't get a chance to read through all of Donald X.'s histories when I copied them into the document. I know he sometimes has grammatical and spelling errors so I will try to run through the whole thing in early August and released a cleaned up version then. If anyone has any further ideas, corrections, or problems, feel free to post. I'll go through all the posts before I release the next version. Thanks and have a great July!

Thank you. I actually found that one myself on my last run-through. I noticed it had a footnote when none of the other Prosperity cards said anything other than "See Section 8". Oops!

Corrected.

I really like having the "History of" information included in the text.

My opinion is probably in the minority but I would rather see the histories listed in the body with the card info rather than in a footnote. Maybe have it in italics and keep it in a smaller font.

I just think the whole thing would read smoother instead of jumping up and down the page. Then again I probably read this document more for the histories than just about anything else.

I am guessing that this file will be a nightmare to update with each new expansion using footnotes compared to just plugging in cards alphabetically with the histories attached.

Thanks again for all the hard work. It is looking great.

I rather consider the histories the annotations to the rules. They are not a part of the rules and should not be considered "game law" and are, therefore, in the footnotes as a reminder that they are not officially part of the game. I originally had them in the body but, besides extending the document almost 15 more pages, they didn't really seem to fit in. It made the document seem more cluttered, oddly, while also making it harder (yes, harder) to organize. Once I put in the footnotes, everything just seemed to come together. Granted jumping up and down on the page is sometimes annoying, but I'm a historian and Chicago Manual of Style is my format, which means lots and lots of footnotes. We'll see how it goes with a new expansion. As it is, I really wish Donald X. would release a proper Prosperity secret history as his "new style" one does not work at all with the footnote or in-text style of this document. Instead, it extends the document two unnecessary pages by being full-sized.

Donald, if you read this, I ask for the sake of this document to write a proper secret history for Dominion! For my sake at least!

All good points. I think my use for the document leans more toward the histories and less toward the rules. That isn't what the document is intended for so I understand why you did it the way you did.

The Prosperity histories is a mess and not clean at all. There are a few cards that can be broken down into footnotes but a proper history from Donald would be welcome.

I've begun work on including the available information on Hinterlands now. I probably won't be doing a new update of the rules until that expansion (and its secret history) is released. Version 1.3 and 1.4 (both unpublished) does have some new things, though, including card images in rules (and an image of victory coins), some more cleaned up formatting, the Walled Village description, and the addition of the Hinterlands game description, preliminary contents (no card names known yet), and preparation for its copyright and suggested kingdom cards sections. All-in-all, good things are to come.

Still, if there are any suggestions to make the current version more fluid, look better, or any general editing suggestions, feel free to suggest away! The new edition will mostly follow the current one with edits. Before the next version releases, I will also try to find a way to better integrate the Prosperity secret histories...hopefully...

– New Section: Cards by Type
– New Section: Cards by Illustrator
– New Section: Cards by Name

– Illustrators now listed with other card information
– Added new Hinterlands rules, cards, descriptions, and secret histories

Which is? I've searched through all the rules documents and not found a single card called "Archivist." Is that a fan expansion or a card I am still magically missing? I've found nothing on Google related to "dominion archivist".

It's a fan card. So I wouldn't add it.
It's apparently up on Isotropic but only available through a special option that unlocks fan cards.

DominionStrategy.com ran a "design a card" contest and the winner was Archivist. The prize for winning was that the card would be included in isotropic, however before it was included it had to get approved by Donald.

@ The Broox: But since Archivist is still not printed, it will not be included in this rules set. Sorry, but this is canon cards only. Hopefully it will be printed someday and then it can be included.

@'The Completist': Technically the Hinterlands and Governor icons are stand-ins. I'm still waiting for someone to upload official icons for those two expansions. They look pretty good in small font, but the larger ones in the components summary don't look quite as crisp as the others. 'twill be fixed sometime soon I hope.

Um, this is my image... I don't know why it was used? LOL. I made an SVG of this horse if you want a larger resolution. whistle

ps: With higher resolution card scans I can now see that there was no mane after all...

A quick Google search... and I turned up with this http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=875.0

Davio wrote:

For those who are wondering what this new "Fan-Created" expansion is on Isotropic, have a look at our Dominion Fan Card Contest topic.

I'd like the discussion of the winning card and its results/strategy to take place in that topic and a general discussion about the inclusion of fan cards on Isotropic can be held here.

Just some quick info:

- The fan created card is called Archivist and is the winning card from our contest. It was designed by rinkworks.
- The fan-created expansion is a fake expansion, designed to hold only that card. It's done this way to make clear to the players that this isn't an offical Dominion card and isn't endorsed by Donald X. or Dominion in any way. Donald X. wanted to make sure players wouldn't get confused, that's why it's being done this way.
- You can enter "Archivist" into the Required Card(s) box and play with it that way
- This fan-created expansion isn't meant to open the flood gates and you shouldn't submit all your fan cards and expansions to either me or Dougz. The chosen card was the winner of a carefully constructed contest and ending up on Isotropic was a surprise for exactly that contest.
- I am uncertain if such a contest will ever be held again. If I do or someone else does, there is no guarantee that the winner will end up on Isotropic too.
- Dougz holds every right to maintain Isotropic in any way that he chooses. If he decides the fan-created category must go, it will.

But for now, we can all have fun with it!

I really like the idea of fan-made cards (contest winners) occasionally getting official releases. If Donald X gave final approval it could be a great way to get a new approach toward Dominion. Until then, I agree that Archivist and cards like it should not be included in the annotated rules.

rinkworks wrote:

Archivist: A Single Card Engine Card « on: September 25, 2011, 10:45:35 am »

The "single card engine" thread got me thinking about what other kinds of single-card engines are possible. I really like Minion (even though I get tired of playing them after a while), and so I was mulling over what might be similar but different.

When I realized we don't have a non-terminal "draw until X cards in hand"-type card, the rest came easily.

The problem with Library/Watchtower is that you can't spam them. Even if you threw on +1 Action, only the first one works; the rest become cantrips. But what if the card in question could also discard stuff, to set up the next one? So I came up with this, refined after a little playtesting:

Archivist
$5 - Action
+1 Action
Choose one: Draw until you have 6 cards in hand; or +$1 and discard 1 or more cards.

A single Archivist is roughly a Laboratory. Better if you can play Festivals and Fishing Villages first; worse if you draw it into your hand after your draw engine has started working.

But the idea of the card is to amass a critical density of them. With two in hand, you play one for the discard, throwing out the substandard cards in your hand so that the second one will draw a larger number of cards. With three or more in hand, you probably play for the draw first, so the second can discard more, so the third can draw more.

If your last Archivist draws an Archivist, just play the new Archivist as a cantrip. But if your last Archivist manages to draw two or more, you can repeat the cycle. The idea is that eventually you wind up with a 6-card hand with your best cards in it. Contrast with Minion, which earns more money as it goes but ends on a purely average 4-card hand.

It might sound like a lot of work to go to: a pair of Archivist is roughly a Cellar, after all, right? Well, not quite. Cellars use up spots in your hand. But because of the way Archivists draw, they don't really take up any space at all. So it's more like Cellars paired up with Laboratories.

I added the +$1 coin after playtesting showed it was still a little weak. But I think that did the trick. The bonus only applies to the discard part, because otherwise you don't get any benefit with that option other than to set up another one. Now you get benefit just by cycling in addition to the fact that you'll end the chain with your best cards in hand. It also allows you to get benefit from an Archivist if you only have one left, and your hand size is more than 6 cards. Play it, discard a Province, and you're up another coin.

It combos very interestingly with other cards. As I mentioned, Festivals and Fishing Villages and all the other cards boost a Minion engine will also boost an Archivist engine in the same way. It's also interesting when there are other drawers present, like Smithy or Rabble or Torturer, because you can try to time playing those to "up" points within the Archivist cycle to maximize benefit. That was probably the coolest thing I stumbled on. I really have to think that we'll get a non-terminal "draw until X" card in a future expansion, because even without the cycling piece of my card, the combos with other drawers are just too cool.

On page 73, the description for Diadem is incorrect and totally confusing.

First, the text (or Value) should include "2 Treasures", like other treasure cards.

Second, the description should read (with corrections highlighted):

Quote:
This is a Treasure worth 2 Treasures, like Silver. You play it in your Buy phase, like other Treasures. When you play it, you get an extra +1 Treasure per unused Action you have. This means Actions, not Action cards. So for example if you play Farming Village (which gives you +2 Actions), then Diadem, Diadem will give you an extra +2 Treasures, for 4 Treasure total. If you play no Action cards at all on your turn, you will have one unused Action, so you will get 3 Treasures total from Diadem. This is a Prize; see the Additional Rules.

Thanks for the edits. Corrected in the master and will be on the next version along with your name added to the Editors & Contributors list. If you find any more, pass them along. I have no idea how Diadem got so screwed up (blame the misses, she transcribed Prosperity for me from the rules).

That's what I've been doing with it. Now I just have to get my Memoir '44 guide up to the same caliber. These rules are a work-in-progress, though, so if you find errors, speak up!

Thank you very much for this! One request...could you make it available in some reflowable format? I'd like to carry it on a portable device since it won't fit in my compact storage box with all my cards. I'd love to have it in epub or mobi so I can put it on my phone, ipod or kindle.

If you don't create those formats yourself, I'd be very happy to create them for you if you wouldn't mind sending something more editable than pdf. Word? html?

I really appreciate your efforts here!

I use this on my iPad all the time using iBooks. That app is available for iPods and iPhone too. The file was created using Apple's Pages, though, and it does not save well into Word or HTML formats. In fact, it was originally a Word document that I had to transfer to Pages because Word kept crashing.

I just tried creating an .epub file out of it but I have too many floating images (the expansion icons) and it said those need to be made inline to work properly, which I can't do because they will screw up the overall formatting of the file. Sorry!

Version 2.1 is up!

New and updated features:
Prosperity secret history re-formatted into footnotes (still large section in History section, though)
– New icons for Hinterlands and Governor
– All Recommended Lists of 10 linked to cards
– Errata to Throne Room added
– Updates in Secret Histories when "future#" cards are later known
– General edits and cleanup throughout

Sorry for the delay on this but I was literally running out the door when I uploaded the file. Please continue to provide feedback, comments, requests, and corrections. If there is anything that should be added that is not, feel free to note that as well. As of the moment, I am fairly happy with this document as is. Bring on the last two expansions!!!

Should have spoken up earlier! Anyway, I've already got two other edits. I'll wait for a few more than post 2.2. I've still got a lot of potential links I want to...well...link. But I've got to get back on track with me Memoir '44 Complete Scenario Book too. So many projects, so little time...

Version 2.2 is just around the corner. It's mostly full of minor corrections, edits, and whatnot but I am finally going to finish the job of linked ever mention of every card in the document. In any case, I want to get this minor update out by the end of the month so am sending a call out to any additional edits that need to be made before then. So, ANY EDITS THAT SHOULD BE INCLUDED? SUGGESTIONS? CORRECTIONS? OMISSIONS? ANYTHING?

I'll start work on including the basic card expansion info as soon as version 2.2 is released.

And now you can return to your normally scheduled programming.

Well, you could always include the names of the next two expansions and mark them as future releases.

Dominion: Dark Ages – out at Gen Con 2012 in August
Dominion: The Guilds – Q2 2013

As mentioned in New Game Round-up: Queen & Rio Grande Unveil Packed 2012 Schedules, Ora et Labora No Mora & Nürnberg 2012 Shapes Up

I've already thought of that but I don't think I'll do it unless we get a confirmation on the official name of the base cards expansion first. As it stands, I'll have to add a third page for the Components section when the new expansions come out and I'd rather not do that until it is absolutely necessary (i.e., the contents of those expansions is in the book as well).

Many new changes coming to version 2.3. That's right, I skipped right past 2.2. Too many changes in one version. Here's a preview of what to look forward to:
* A near-complete integration of the Complete and All-Encompassing Dominion FAQ by PunchBall
* A new section — Reading a Card — that includes a chart of Village with explanations of each part of it and references to other cards
* Revised formatting throughout including larger-font card names, larger-font subsection names, fixed fonts throughout, and reorganization of some sections
* Footnotes in the rules section (many of which provided by the above-mentioned FAQ)
* Inclusion of the Dominion playmat in the section: Playing the Game
* Removal of references to the "Draw Phase"
* Many many minor edits throughout

As I wrap up work on this edit (before the release of Base Cards), please provide any edits or updates you feel are necessary. This version will hopefully be out in the next few weeks. Thanks!

Version 2.3 is up!

New and updated features:
- Integration of PunchBall's Complete and All-Encompassing Dominion FAQ
- New section: Reading a Card
- Revised formatting throughout with larger fonts and more subsections
- Footnotes in rules section now
- Remoed references to the "Draw Phase"
- Dozens of minor errors corrected

This will be the last update until Base Cards is released in March/April. Keep bringing the edits. I've already found a few. And yes, I know that Tournament spans two pages. It doesn't have room on one page and I have tried and failed to fit it. Sometimes word processors reach their limits and Tournament is apparently Pages's limit.

Spotted a few issues for the next release.

Prosperity does not come with embargo tokens and your indention in the component breakdowns is not consistent, just need to hit tab in a few places.

Thank you. Oddly, I didn't touch that section in this update so it's funny that you bring up the errors now. In any case, I copied the Seaside template for Prosperity, as you probably guessed, hence why embargo tokens were there. They are removed now. I also wasn't quite sure what you meant about the "tab in a few places" but I did make all the components consistent now. In most places, I actually had to delete an extra space, though in some spots I had to add one or two. I think they are all consistent now and the section definitely looks better for it, so thanks.

I checked out the list but I don't see it as necessary. I already have a complete components breakdown with the expansion icons, plus I have the icons in another places and on each card. The box covers are part of the cover of my document. The themes are included in the expansion description in the components section and in the background info on Page 1. But since you requested it, I will add the release location information and the month and year of release for each expansion to the components list. Will that satisfy? It won't be as succinct, but it should work.

Page 2 needs a footnote with the original text for Cornucopia...

Quote:
Autumn. It seemed like the summer would never end, but that fortune teller was right. It's over. Autumn, the time of the harvest. Agriculture has advanced significantly in recent years, ever since the discovery of the maxim, "leaves of three, let it be." Autumn, a time of celebration. The peasants have spent a hard week scything hay in the fields, but tonight the festivities begin, starting with a sumptuous banquet of roast hay. Then, the annual nose-stealing competition. Then you have two jesters, one who always lies, one who always tells the truth, both hilariously. Then, they fight to the death! This celebration will truly have something for everyone.

That needs to live on somewhere.

I copied it off some gaming site that never updated the revised text. I know Donald commented on the change here on BGG but it may have been something as mundane as 'I don't know why he changed it".

Added to the original text without a footnote. The footnote would have been too unnecessary and would have broken the flow. Meh. I like it.

Alright, as I rev up to releasing Version 2.4 with Base Cards and some of the early Dark Ages stuff, I want to ask for some suggestions and help. Currently, I've just been updating my Annotate Rules' cover with new photos with every expansion. That system will hold until the very last one coming out next year. But even know, it's looking rather cluttered and I don't like it anymore.

In anticipation of next year and to make the entire document look better, I would like someone to create a new cover for me. It must state somewhere on it "Dominion Complete Annotated Rules." It may mention "Derek 'Whaleyland' Whaley" as the compiler. It may mention Donald X. Vaccarino. It may not have Rio Grande's logo on it, except from cover art. If anyone is willing to give this a shot, please help me out. My document is in 8 1/2" by 11" format so try and scale it for that. Size doesn't matter because I can shrink it to what I need.

Second, I would like to add more indexes to the back of the book. Currently, I have an alphabetical index, a type index, and an author index. I'm thinking of adding a cost index as well. Are there any other methods of organizing the cards that I could add to the back of the booklet?

Finally, is there any major thing that could be added that I am missing. I know of one that I would like somebody to provide for me: could somebody scan the Dominion Big Box playmat for me? I'd like to include it in the setup instructions.

Is there anything else that could be added?

Thanks for the help. Version 2.4 will be out as soon as Base Cards is released and the components and authors are known. Parts of Dark Ages are already added including the flavor text and an early speculative card list. I may remove all of that for the 2.4 release and add it back in for Version 2.5. Thanks!

Version 2.4 will be up in just a bit but I will be deleting it for a micro update tomorrow due to the additional confirmation of the Trash illustrator and me forgetting to check the correction above. So hold tight until tomorrow night!
