When I lived in the Tidewater area, I gamed with the designer of the variant and a group of people who played 7 Ages at least 40 times. Charlie came up with the variant as a means of introducing random acts (good and bad) into the game. It made a great game even better. Sometimes the variant affects game play little or not at all, but sometimes it influences events and every once in a while it changes it dramatically.

We have played it another 40 times since then and will be playing it this coming weekend (Oct 29/30).

And also, importantly, adds a mechanism for ending the game in a more satisfactory manner than time limit, play to end of an age, or to the end of age 7, which can take a VERY long time indeed!

BTW I would welcome feedback/comments from any groups that
have tried this variant. Always room for improvement!
