Hello everybody,

I tried to develop map and rules whitch would be well adapted for 2 players. If you have any comments or suggestions to improve the game, just let me know, they are welcome!!

English is not my first language so I hope the rules are clear!

Looks great! One question - what if the 2 cards for the +3$ spaces are the SAME color. Do you double up on the +3$ bonus?

Sorry, in my excitement about this map I didn't read that you don't shuffle ALL of the cards you pull out. My apologies for the stupid question. I am hoping to try this out soon!

You’re right. You only shuffle 5 cards, one card of each color except Brown (because there are no “Brown” locations on the map).

Hope you will like it!!

I printed it to 8 1/2 x 11 sticker paper and I bought some 9x11 construction boards at staples. Gonna tape them together and stick the map onto it. Could have bought a bigger board, but I didn't feel like cutting it down.

You can also print the 6 pages on regular paper and stick them together with transparent scotch-tape. If you do that, when you put 2 pages together, you need to trim the edge of one of the sheet to make them fit.

If somebody wants to print it on a very big printer (plotter?), I can provide an uncut map.

Ok, now I'm getting mad. So, I went to assemble this today and I realized that when I printed the map out, it came out with the edges cut off. I tried borderless printing and that didn't come out right either. How the heck am I supposed to print this?? HELP!

Try to put the Page Scaling option in the Print Dialog Box of Acrobat Reader to Fit To Printable Area and it should work.

I’ve just tried it again a few minutes ago to be sure and the pages fitted well. Of course you'll need to cut the edge of some pages before to put them together to make them fit.

On my computer that option is by default, so I didn't think to specify...

Let me know it if works.

I'm really sorry for the inconvenience.cry

Just wanted to let you all know that my sticker paper idea on board worked out pretty well. I'm not Cathy Craft by any stretch of the imagination, but here is a pic of what the finished product looks like. A bigger pic can be found in my gallery. Packing tape on the back to reinforce the seams so in can fold up across the middle.

I played the Great Lakes map once so far with the +3 Color Profit Zones being Green and Purple. Overall, I was very impressed with your map. Here are my comments based on one play.

St. Lawrence Seaway Navigation Season
I really liked the changing of the seasons. Players have to plan for Winter so that they have meaningful actions. The 2nd player can also plan to take advantage of having 4 actions in a row with the flipping of turn order. Normally there are plenty of building resources provided by the Ships, but during Winter there usually was a building freeze.

I can envision other maps with changing seasons, such as an increase in profits for selling cotton during the summer or a decrease in coal/iron cubes when building in winter.

+3 Profit Color Zones
I really liked the zones. There is an incentive for players to compete heavily in these zones. It's brilliant that these zones are variable during setup. This rule alone should keep the game as fresh and interesting as the Great Lakes.

Northern Ontario
In my session Green was a +3 Profit zone. This made the Northern Ontario location an obvious first build and perhaps overpowered. It would have been slightly less powerful if Blue was the other +3 Profit Zone (it's on the opposite side of the map,)

I do like that there is a special location based on the actual geography of the region. However, if it does turn out to be an overpowered location, one possible change is to ignore the +3 Profit for building an Iron Works if Green is one of the 2 selected colors.

Coal & Iron Demand Displays
I highly doubt that any overbuilding will take place with 6 spaces per demand display. This is another reason that makes Northern Ontario a prime spot to build for there is no risk of being overbuilt by your opponent.

Two-space Cities
I really like that each 2-space city has a Port. Players have to decide if they want a Port or not.

Wisconsin & the Presqu Isle Ship
I always like special locations. Wisconsin is always a possible winter build.

Setup for Cards and Counters
The number of cards and counters removed seemed good to me.

The Great Lakes is currently the only map that I would consider playing a 2-player game. The 2-player experience on other maps would benefit from removing cards and/or counters. Has someone already done so for NE, Germany, Japan, and/or Minnesota?

I agree with you that Northern Ontario becomes very Powerful when the green color is the +3$ profit zone. However, I think it’s important to keep an advantage to build an Iron works there given the importance of mines in that region.

Your proposition to ignore the +3 profit for building Iron works could work. However, that would constitute an “exception” which might complicate the rules a little bit and might be easily forgotten? In order to keep the rules (fairly) simple, another solution could be to reduce the building cost of an Iron Work in Northern Ontario by 1$, meaning that it would cost:

1$ for a level 1
4$ for a level 2 and
8$ for a level 3.

Northern Ontario would remain an interesting location without being too powerful. I will try that.

That’s an interesting comment. I didn’t explore the possibility to remove some spaces from the demand display. Having fewer spaces would increase the possibility of being overbuilt by the opponent. I will have to test that!

Thanks!

Claude

Great job on the map!

I had this map printed on a 20" x 30" canvas at artscow.com and it turned out pretty nice. I modified the map to be closer to 20" x 20" so that it would fit on that size canvas since the 20x30 is a reasonable price when purchased with a coupon. The shrinking caused the city squares to be just a little smaller than the cardboard tiles, but it's not an issue.

It turned out very nice. I hope to play it the next time I have a 2-player game night.

If you are interested in having one of your own made via artscow.com, here is the direct link to the map: http://www.artscow.com/gallery/0wo8h3gatysv.

They often have coupon codes available at this link: http://www.artscow.com/promote/fcfs.aspx. As of the time of this posting, you can use a code to get the 20" x 30" canvas for $24.99, including shipping.

Since these canvases have a tendency to not lay perfectly flat, you may need to lay a clear plastic sheet on it to hold it flat. I bought a $11 post-frame plastic (24"x36") at Michael's for this purpose and it works pretty well for this map and the Ticket to Ride: UK map I also had printed at artscow.com.

Jack, You're getting ahead of me!

Yes, I'm developping a new map and wanted to contact you about it by Geekmail because I would need some feedback from experienced players before to post it on BGG. I’m still not sure if the result will be good or not. Don’t have too much expectation!

The future map won't be for 2 players though.

Claude

Claude, are you planning to do any more maps? I'll be breaking out this great 2p map again on Wed, but I'd love to see what else you can do.

Claude

Can't wait to see it

Post your thoughts after you've played it so I know that I'm not just being a fanboy when I speak highly of this great map.

I tried this map the other night. I will need to get more plays in, but the first go went really well.

It plays quicker than a normal game (with the reduced cards and sites) and is a nice tight space for 2 players. The winter season frozen lake mechanic added some urgency and timing that provided a nice rhythm, and the predictable turn order swap immediately after winter spiced up the 2-player strategy.

So far, it's the best AoI 2-player map available. Great work Claude! I'll be looking forward to trying out your next map(s).

Also, cheers to Bruce for preparing the Artscow map template for us.

I ordered a print of the Great Lakes, it's definitely more expensive than printing it out -- but worth every penny, Claude's map looks fantastic printed on canvas.

I hope we can someday see Treefrog printing of the map (or a version of it, Mr. Wallace might want to tinker ;-) ).

Official or no, this is the best 2-player map for AoI to date.

There's $20 that I would happily part with.

Thanks for your comments Greg! I appreciate.

I don't know why I haven't thought about that before, but I should have adapted the map to the 24 X 20 inches format (even though the current format is very close - 24 X 21).

I did minor modifications in the rules (especially regarding the scoring) which I should post shortly. I also did a few minor esthetic improvements on the map which doesn't have any impact on the gameplay. So the map you've printed will still be good.

For the other maps I'm working on, I'm still waiting for feedback from some BGG players who are playtesting them!!

K

Download the file from August 24. It contains the rules and the map in letter-format.
