“Fixing Chippawa”
A guide to fixing the “Chippawa” scenario in Napoleon's War Battle Pack II
I'm very glad that Worthington saw fit to include “War of 1812” scenarios for an expansion pack to their very fine game “Napoleon's War”. Hopefully more of these will be forthcoming. As interesting as the scenarios are for Battle Pack II America's War, a few of them could use a bit of tweaking in order to make them more historically accurate.
This article will show how the Order of Battle is easily corrected to put it more in line with history, still be a balanced scenario and his more fun to play.
“Chippawa” was the first major battle where the US infantry proved themselves to be equal of the British. The long training under Generals Brown and Scott had paid off. The main error in the stock scenario is the composition of the US Army. Although the composition of some units needs altering because both sides utilized Militia and Indian units. For game purposes militia and Indian units will both be considered the same.
Attached is the corrected Order of Battle for “Chippawa”. For the militia and Indian units players can used either the gray plastic units (the Prussians) and mark the space with a red or blue counter. Alternately, player can use the plastic colored pieces for each side and use the brown 'militia' counters provided.
With these alterations the game will be much more historically accurate and the British player will face the situation more closely to what General Riall faced in 1814.
