Variant_Starcraft_Invasions_1-2.zip (156 KB) (Log in or Register to download.)
You have this box in your closet called Starcraft that the only experience your friends remembered was that it last 10 hours.

Then this variant is for you, it allows you to play Starcraft alone. You can also play at 2 players if you find somebody else willing to accept the challenge.

The idea is that an Artificial intelligence will control the factions you are not playing. They will constantly invade your small galaxy made of 3 planets in order to occupy space and destroy the land. Your goal is to accumulate enough points and survive until the event deck runs out.

So if you have starcraft and never have a chance to play, then this is the perfect variant for you. The only person you need to convince is yourself.

Enjoy!

Always wish for a solo variant.
I'll try it this weekend.
Thank you!

I read the rule and tried a solo game tonight, the order card and the combat table work fine. It makes me thinking and enjoying, more trying later~

unfortunately I do not own the game but this looks like a good idea for a neat solitaire experience. Have been scouting the game on Ebay for some time...
Anyway thumbs up for this!

Just a suggestion
Maybe instead of the invader cards (I try to avoid printing out additional cards if possible) couldn't you just use 2d8? Here a possible example

Each die stands for one invader, perform actions after this table:
(1-2) Invader builds
(3-4) Invader researches
(5-6) Invader attacks
(7-8) Invaders does nothing

Not really, because it could unbalance the occurrence of certain actions or certain factions that would unbalance the game in favor or against the player. By using cards, the distribution of the odds is more normalized.

I would suggest using regular cards if printing cards is impossible. Still, it does not require that many cards, they all fit on 1 sheet. It's the unit cards that require much more printing.

I was supposed to make a video review, but since I am badly equipped and since I am not very confident to make videos, I am going to make a picture guide.

It's just that lately, I lack of time because I have started to re-program my video game project (abandoned a long time ago) so most of my time is focused on that.

The question is, do we call it imbalanced or randomized
Using the 2d8 for two differnt invaders you do not get a Gaussian distribution, so I do not think the gameplay will change that much.

It's just that I don't like play cards printet out on normal paper, it just does not "feel" right.

Then print it on card board. I use 110 pound Card board, but it does no fit in some printer. Else 85 pound cardboard works perfectly.

I don't say that the dice system would not work. It's just that since there is not that many rolls, (average 6 turns x 4 = 24 rolls per faction), you could end up in a situation where certain actions appears too much or not enough.

Ok! I thought there would be much more turns...

Then I guess your idea with the cards is most likely the better way.

Already own the Brood War expension, now I just need to find the core game

Generally people try to find the base game first. I was just thinking it it could be possible to play with only the expansion, but I think there is too much component missing to be playable.

I got the game now, played by your rules and really like it

One question though:
If the AI gets an Attack order, are the local forces also allowed to move to a different planet? I most certainly think so, but the rules read like the local forces always stay on the same planet!?

More playtesting (and questions )hopefully tomorrow!!!

Thanks again for these great rules

The local force always stay on the planet. If it controls a planet completely, it will camp it.

Still, that might create a bug if the invasion point does not move and if the planet is full. So maybe if a planet is controlled only by an AI, or if a planet is full, it will move it's invasion point randomly to another planet.

I am happy that you liked it. Personally, I prefer it to the original game because being able to think openly makes the game much more easier. A 2 player cooperative game could probably also be interesting.
