MBT Units Number-crunching
|
MBT Statistics.xlsx 233 KB
Dear Forum,
as I like to analyse, and study the impact of various parameters for different style of play (or, maybe tactical optimisation of units), I have collected all of the game units, from IDF via MBT to the herein uploaded units in an Excel workbook.
I usually describe my style of play as "Outflank Assault", or "Movement-based Counterattacks". I rarely "Turtle".
Hopefully the file is selfexplanatory - I am multiplying different factors from the units (at 1 hex range, frontal armour), and dividing with the points the unit is worth, in order to find a Best Solution to the situation, tactic, or parameter to study.
Example: Outflank-assault relies on speed and firepower - hence:
ARMOUR Swift Asslt = AP*PY*TF KE*MF^2/PT
AP is the AP value, at 1 hex range
PY in a similar way
TF KE is the Turret Front KE armour
MF is the Movement Factor, MF, _squared_, my way of highlighting speed as THE importance in my "Outflank-Assault" tactic.
Winners are Type 99, Strv 122B, Leo 2A6.
Compare this to the "Turtle Defence" analysis:
Turtle DEF = GPDEF*KE TF*GP EFF/PT
GPDEF is the GP defence factor, usually 8 for a modern tank
KE TF, see above
GP EFF is how high GP DEF the "calibre" can knock out.
For "Turtling", the winners are:
Type 99, TR-125, Strv 122B, IS-3 (*giggle*), Asad Babil.
Viewing the analyses it seems like the Type 99 is rather effective, and might be influenced by some Wiki Propaganda? Or maybe am I just neglecting the fact that China has the best tanks in the world, 2011.
Please respond in the Forum section, if you have any thoughts.

A few 1980s-era Swedish units--a 102 Centurion, the S-tank, a Pvb 302 APC and infantry. Artillary would be similar to West Germany and I don't use air units as much, so you're on your own there. As always, comments are welcome. I'm sure there's plenty of room for improvement.

Egyptian M-1A1 & Ramses II Tanks
|
MBT_-_Exported-M-1A1-Abrams_Data_Card_v1.0.xls 64 KB
After watching Egyptian M-1A1's & M-60A3's on the news for the past few weeks, I decided to make a few cards. The Egyptian M-1A1 is a down-armored version of the American Abrams (I gave it the M-1's armor with the "export" 120mm gun I previously uploaded). The Egyptian M-60A3 doesn't appear to differ much from the American one from MBT (although it can lay smoke from the exhaust, as evident from the news coverage--therefore "Smoke Makers" should be "DS + EX") so I didn't bother with a new card. I had been meaning to make a Ramses II for a while now, so I included one of those as well. It's a marginally uparmored T-55M1 with a standard NATO L7 gun. Nothing fancy. I know I probably look like a jerk to be inspired to upload MBT cards after viewing what will hopefully be a peaceful transition of government, but it was on my mind and I haven't done any cards in a while. God-willing, no violence will extend beyond the cardboard "what-if" battlefields of our tabletops. Let me know if you have comments or recommendations.

Modern Chinese MBTs & Infantry
|
MBT_-_ChineseUnits1990s2000s_Data_Card_v1.0.xls 116 KB
Per another request, included here are the Chinese Type 99 & Type 96 MBTs as well as an update to the infantry card I previously posted. The tanks follow the same methods I've described before. The Chinese infantry apparently greatly enhanced their anti-tank missile capabilities at the end of the 1980's so the new card reflects this. As a side note, I also changed the missile designation from "Red Arrow" to "Hongjian" since it sounded better for the card. This could apply to the previous Chinese units I made using the Chinese copy of the Sagger, but the actual stats wouldn't change--just the name. I'm not sure what APCs/IFVs would be in the Chinese TOE above and beyond what I already posted, so I didn't include any. If anyone has any questions or comments, please feel free.

WW2-era German Maus Prototype
|
MBT_-_Pzkw-VIII-Maus_Data_Card_v1.0.xls 39 KB
Weighing in at 200 tons, the German Maus is the heaviest tank ever constructed (at least that I know of). Here's the Wikipedia link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panzer_VIII_Maus). I was curious how the legendary tank would actually stack up against modern weapons...and the answer turns out to be quite poorly. Once shaped charges became more commonplace, the heavy tanks went the way of the dodo and you'll quickly see why (even the basic RPG-7 from IDF can destroy the Maus from any angle on level ground). Still, it could be fun for alternate history/etc scenarios so I thought I'd upload it. In case you're curious, I pulled performance data for the German guns from this website (http://www.freeweb.hu/gva/weapons/introduction.html), which sadly only appears to have WW2 vintage weapons. Enjoy.

USMC Counters
|
MEU_SOC_Counters.pdf 5.33 MB
Squad counters with appropriate number of Marines (vs. the US Army-sized counter that appears in the boxed game). Also includes AAV-7's, LAV-25's, LAV-AT's, LAV-M's, LAV-AD's, and various HMMWV variants. Aircraft featured include the AH-1W, the CH-46, CH-53, UH-1, Harrier, and F/A-18. Everything you need to run a MEU-SOC is present. I have artwork for Ospreys if anyone is interested in playing with those instead of the CH-46's.

Soviet TOS-1 "Heavy Flame Thrower System"
|
MBT_-_TOS-1_Data_Card_v1.0.xls 89 KB
The TOS-1 looks like something from a bad sci-fi movie (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TOS-1), but I couldn't resist making a card for one :) Included here is the TOS-1, which is based on a T-72 Ural chassis, and its associated reloading vehicle, the TZM (also based on the T-72). For all intents and purposes it's basically a large, incendiary mortar launcher on a tank chassis, so that's how I represented it. Russia used an up-armored version (to T-72A standards) in more recent conflicts, so I also included that. I have to admit, though, this is only a slightly less ridiculous unit for MBT than the Davy Crockett nuclear bazooka I made before, so I probably put WAY too much time into it as it is :)

UK Berlin Brigade Chieftain Mk9 & FV432/30 RARDEN
|
MBT_-_UK-Berlin-Brigade-Armour_Data_Card_v1.0.xls 80 KB
I've been kicking around fitting MBT rules/units to smaller hex scale mapsheets for urban battles. With West Berlin being an obvious urban hotspot for the 1980's Cold War matchups, I was adding additional units to fill out the Berlin Brigade's OB. Jim Day has already posted a modern UK OB elsewhere, but I still needed a pre-Stillbrew Armour Chieftain and the unique FV432/30 RARDEN (only 13 were ever built--1 for evaluation in the UK and 12 deployed to West Berlin), so here they are. It doesn't translate to MBT cards, but the UK armour of this era had a pretty unique camo scheme (to say the least) in West Berlin. It's worth a look online if you've never seen it. Once again, feel free to comment if you see any room for improvement.

French AML-60 Recon Vehicle

Another French vehicle to supplement StarDog616's earlier units. The AML-90 was already included in the Israeli force in IDF. I swapped out the 90mm gun for a 60mm mortar and a coaxial machine gun. Nothing too fancy. As always, comments are more than welcome.

1980's & early 1990's French Infantry
|
MBT_-_FrenchInfantry_Data_Card_v1.0.xls 52 KB
To supplement the French units that StarDog616 uploaded a while back, I whipped up some French infantry. They basically look a lot like the West Germans, but with no AA missiles (please correct me if these were available at this time), the French version of the Swedish AT-4 and another domestically produced, shoulder-launched anti-tank weapon. Nothing fancy. As always, comments are welcome.

Generic Civilian Vehicles
|
MBT_-_CivilianVehicles_Data_Card_v1.0.xls 53 KB
Someone asked me about creating an automobile card for MBT. Although they had asked about a specific make/model, it would appear to me that the differences between just about any 2-wheel drive vehicle would be nominal in MBT terms, so I made my card very generic. In short, it is an open vehicle (not necessarily a convertible, mind you--MBT doesn't give credit to any trucks/unarmored vehicles for FC) which is faster than the fastest tank on pavement, but as slow as infantry off-road once conditions deteriorate. While I was at it, I made a generic civilian 4x4 card to simulate pickups, SUVs, etc. It's basically a slightly smaller Light Truck (I assumed the Light Truck in MBT was a standard, military 2.5 ton, in spite of the listed weight on the card), so nothing fancy there. In theory, the addition of weapons to the 4x4 and the removal of the transport capacity could turn this into a "technical", but there's already one for a HMG & 106mm recoillies rifle in IDF, so I didn't replicating cards which already existed. As always, comments are always welcome.

Yugoslavian (and successor state) M-84 tanks
|
MBT_-_M-84-Data_Card_v1.0.xls 149 KB
This file contains variants of the M-84, which was the designation for T-72s produced in the former Yugoslavia. Included is the base M-84 (which is basically a T-72G/T-72M), the M-84AB (which was an upgraded export sold to Kuwait around the time of the First Gulf War), two Croatian variants, and a Serbian variant, which is similar to the Russian T-90. This was the last set of vehicle cards I was working on, but I enjoy the research/design so if anyone has any ideas please feel free to suggest them (or try your hand and making your own). ...and, of course, if you have any comments or suggestions, please leave a comment.

Romanian T-55 & T-72 Variants
|
MBT_-_Romanian-T-55s_Data_Card_v1.0.xls 105 KB
Included are the Romanian TR-77, TR-85, TR-85M1 & the prototype TR-125. The TR-77 & TR-85 are upgraded T-55's, with the most notable change being a larger engine which resulted in an extra road wheel being added. They don't appear to have exported, but would have the primary MBT in the Romanian army at the close of the Cold War. The TR-85M1 is a modernized TR-85 which is in current service in Romania. The TR-125 was a prototype T-72 with a larger engine (and an additional set of road wheels) which was never deployed. I made a card for it anyway since a) it sounded kind of fun and b) Jane's still assumed it was a potentially front-line vehicle as of 1990. As always, comments are welcome.

Polish PT-91 "Twardy" & T-55AM "Merida"
|
MBT_-_Polish-T-55-and-T-72-Upgrades_Data_Card_v1.0.xls 66 KB
Included is an updated T-55 from the 1980's and an updated T-72 from the 1990's. The "Merida" was a standard T-55 with an improved fire control system. The "Twardy" was an upgrade on the previous domestically-produced T-72 in Poland, the exported T-72M1 (technically not the same vehicle as the "T-72M1" card in the boxed game, which is a T-72A by modern designations, but the differences would be nominal, at best, in game terms from what I can gather). Detail on the this tank was a bit light, but from what I can tell it was much closer to the T-72B than something more modern, which is in part why Poland adopted the Leopard 2A4. If you know anything more, please leave a comment.

Modern M-1A2SEP & Marine M-60A1 from First Gulf War
|
MBT_-_Modern-M1A2-and-Marine-M60A1-circa-FirstGulfWar_Data_Card_v1.0.xls 63 KB
Although the M-1A2 in MBT always seemed a bit too good compared to the competition, now that some modernized units are uploaded I thought the M-1A2 actually needed a pick-me-up to stay realistically competitive. Also included is a Marine M-60A1 from the First Gulf War that I was using in a couple scenarios recently. As always, comments are welcome if anything looks amiss...or if you just want to say something :)
