Description

[Edit] [History]

Briscola is a traditional Italian point trick taking game for 2 to 6 players. It uses a 40-card deck Ace through 2 minus the 8,9 and 10 with the Ace being the high and worth the most (11 points), followed by the 3 (10 points), King (4 points), Knight/Queen (3 points) and Infantry/Jack (2 points). All other cards do not score any point.
Each player is dealt 3 cards with one turned up as the trump suit. Play does not need to follow suit and the winner of each trick replenishes their hand first. The total points in each game are 120 and whoever has the higher scoring wins a manche of the game.
Play with 3-6 players just takes a few minor adjustments to the rules or cards and the versions for 4-6 are played with partnerships.
Two interesting variants are:
- "Briscola scoperta" in which all the cards are face up and visible by all players.
- "Briscola chiamata", played in 5 (3 vs 2). It has an initial bet on the expected final scoring. Who bets the highest amount calls a card, whose owner becomes (secretely) his partner and play with the caller against the other 3 players. So the players (except the called one) do not know exactly who are the opponents and the partners.
