Cineplexity was developed over the course of several years. JonMichael (JM), John and Sean all met in high school in Hudson, Wisconsin. When they were waiting or traveling, they would play a movie game akin to the old Kevin Bacon game.
The idea for Cineplexity in its current format actually began with the publishing of Word Freak. JM tried to cast the movie game as a tile placement game. John thought little of this idea, but thought that a card game version may work well. They brainstormed the first deck of cards and brought Sean on board to help refine the cards as well as sell the game.
JM, John and Sean regarded their design as a deck of cards for which they developed many different games, but it was Out of the Box that ultimately developed the play style for the base game.
