This is the catalog of the exhibition Asian Games: The Art of Contest, held at the Sackler and Freer Galleries in Washington, DC, in the first quarter of 2005.
The exhibition presented works of art, all to do with playing games, from China, Japan, India and Persia, on loan from more than fifty public and private lenders worldwide.
Co-edited by Colin Mackenzie and Irving Finkel, the 325 page book is divided into four parts:
Part one: Tossing and Turning
This part deals with dice and dice games
Part two: War and Territory
This part deals with Chess variants and Go
Part three: Games of Matching and Memory
This part deals with playing cards
Part four: Power and Dexterity
This part deals with Pitchpot, Polo and Kickball games
Chapters are authored by the editors and other renowned games writers (e.g. David Parlett pens the first chapter, Andrew Lo writes on many Chinese games).
Full color pictures of games and their beautiful bits make this a visual delight. Rare and unusual games not commonly described in print are featured (e.g. Chinese promotion games, Liubo, Ganjifa).
