I have not played the game, nor ever seen it up close.

This is a common assumption, but I think it's group dependent. The people I play with tend to have a lot of fun with the headlines, and start making up stories about what they say, quite spontaneous, but usually amusing.

I'm sure the VG reprint will be nice, but I have no problem owning an original.

There is language on some components (story headlines and advertisements), but it's just for flavor - you don't need to understand it. As long as you can distinguish one German headline from another (so you can see who has the biggest story for each one), you'll be fine.

Thanks Michael. Does this mean that the "Duck/Advert (Zeitungsente/Anzeige)" tiles cannot be removed from the FAX board using the remove tiles action? I would assume they cannot be removed, but rather must be taken and used, is that how you play it?

They work like Zeitmotor tiles, but they do not advance the clock, that is why they are labeled differently.

As you note, there are already 12 Zeitmotor tiles, apparently Schmiel just wanted there to be a bit more screw you in the game than the 12 zeitmotor tiles would allow for

This game looks pretty interesting, and I'm strongly considering preordering it (actually, to be honest, I'm considering preordering several of the Valley Games Classic Line, and Supernova, too, though I've got to watch my wallet...!)

A thought came to me -- with the different sticker sheets comes an excellent opportunity to use the game as a foreign language teacvhing/learning aid. Will there be any way to play, out of the box, multiple languages with the same copy? Or to order extra sheets of counters to use with other languages?

Thanks, and keep up this great stuff coming!
-K
I have to admit that I had never heard of Extra-Blatt! before it hit the table. Everyone else had played before, but I generally pick games up fast.

Scoring: (in turn order)
[c] Gerry Kenny Paul Me
Headline Bonus 60 60 60 60
Sections:
Red 60 0 0 30
Yellow 30 0 0 60
Blue 0 60 60 0
Green 0 0 60 30
Orange 0 60 30 0
Purple 0 60 0 30
(90) (180) (150) (150)
Stories:
Headline 120 180 120 80
Regular 80 130 140 90
(200) (310) (260) (170)

Final Score 350 550 470 380[/c]

Gerry went first and as such, wound up being a good target for Ads. Kenny battled with him early 3x times, winning two out of the three (more on the checks later).

Paul also decided to battle across the table with me, taking two of the 3. Kenny beat Paul and that was the final Ad battle. Astute readers will realize that the Extra Turns got doled out as following: Kenny 6, Paul 4, Gerry 2, Me 2. I believe there is a pretty decent correlation between the amount of extra turns and a player's score.

Now to Checks -- I was dealt the 1-5-12, so I knew I was going to win at least one battle. I used the 12 first battle to capture Paul's 11. Second battle I put up the 1 which lost to his 6. Our final clash saw the 12 return to me, beating my 5. This left me with the 12-11-6 -- I though I was pretty well set for the "ducks" (a mistake -- more later).

I felt at a disadvantage going last (though it may have been my exacerbated by some bad plays) -- when it was my turn often the choice of the 5 faxes was poor -- Everything seemed to be in conflict with another player:

. It was a color that was already dominated by two players
. It was an article already dominated by another player
. There was no available space to place it
. Playable as a picture, but no picture tiles left
. Unplayable triple

I spent some of this time dithering by filling my Headline with tiles that would eventually be trashed just to get the 60pt Headline Bonus (Gerry filled his right away setting the bar, and Paul soon afterwards, so it became clear that the headline would have to be filled to get any points at all from the bonus).

In retrospect, I was a bit stubborn with my choices, often taking a bad fax over trashing two -- This often forced Gerry (the next player to trash, which wound up benefiting Paul and Kenny. The few times I did trash, I often made bad choices (more later on color/identifying pieces) and once I trashed a Duck (more later).

We seemed to get a lot of duplicate faxes, and the majority of the pictures (only 2 per color) were played by 6:00, and all by 9:00.

Never having played the game, I made a strategic error in holding back playing articles from 1:00-5:00 -- I figured I could score more points by concentrating on playing during the 2nd and 3rd phases, where each article would be worth double, then triple points. This turned out bad for two main reasons -- first, I was locked out of playing a lot of faxes due to competition (see above) and secondly, phase 2 was shorter and phase 3 was non-existant.

Speaking of phase 3, ours lasted exactly 4 turns (the last two being Kenny using his last Extra Turn). I attacked and beat Gerry to go to 9:00, Gerry attacked and beat Paul(10:00), Paul played a 30pt fax, and Kenny was able to get the clock to 12:00.

Here I must talk about a flaw in my strategy -- having the 11 and 12, I was counting on being able to get two solid "ducks" in during phase 3 -- to this point I even trashed a "duck" fax earlier in the game. What I hadn't counted on was no one attacking me -- given the way the checks worked, Gerry and Kenny knew each others hands (as did I and Paul), but I didn't count on Kenny and Gerry putting me on the high checks (because of my win-loss-loss to Paul, they were able to extrapolate this). While we didn't do it this game, they mentioned that in previous sessions, they had gone as far as to keep notes as to all the check passing to keep values.

What I should have done was use those 2 high checks to win Ad battles and earn Extra Turns -- I think they would have been more useful than winning "ducks" Also, having used up my 3 Extra Turns early, I found myself boxed in -- I could never get to a Time Card as the were always at least 1-deep to me, and without that Extra Turn I could not get to them to convert my high Checks.

The game often slowed down as all 5 faxes often had to be reviewed and assesed every player turn. The active player would look at a fax, and often have to ask around based on the color (who has orange, and how big is it?) Then they would ask "Who has Gummibarchen, what size, any pictures, or has one been discarded already?" -- since it was near impossible to assess someones peices from across the table, people were having to call out when they met the criteria.

When it came down to time to score, we all had the 60pts from Headlines, and the largest areas weren't diverse in points (although Gerry and I hated to see that friendly tie in Blue for Kenny and Paul). But, once we started removing lesser duplicate artiles, my board got pillaged, leaving my Headline half empty, as well as a few other holes -- that accounted for my bad score. Gerry had been plagued by adds early, and a couple of ducks took down some more points, leaving Paul and Kenny with the big scores.

Some General Comments
We were playing the German version of the game, so the theme felt very-tacked on. To me Extra-Blatt! played very much like an overly complex Knizia game where you are trying to aquire and build large groupings of the six different suits of tiles.

I read that Valley Games is doing a reprint, and I really hope they choose 6 discernable colors -- I am colorblind, and having both the blue/purple and red/green faxes register the same made the game extremely difficult.

---
NorthBay Gamers meet most Monday nights at the Mill Valley Round Table Pizza
Info: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/northbaygamers/
Note: No meeting 11/18!
I'd like to put a good word in for Kevin Nesbitt. Some months ago I wrote to him proposing a trade for his valuable copy of Extrablatt. He wrote back saying that it was out on loan and I'd have to wait six months before making a proposal.

I thought this was odd, but I waited, and while I was waiting, Valley Games announced a reprint. I realized that Kevin was, without giving the secret away, making sure I didn't lose out by trading for a game that his company was planning to reprint.

Thanks, Kevin, for handling this situation in such a courteous way!

What follows is the official information for the reprint, including the description, price and preorder bonus.

This game can be preordered from www.valleygames.ca starting July 23rd at 12pm EST (noon).
_________________________________________________________________________

Karl-Heinz Schmiel’s fast paced game Extrablatt will now be available in an international version as Special Edition. This edition will have all new hilarious headlines in English, French, German, Dutch, Italian and Spanish and all new artwork by Mike Doyle.

In Special Edition, players take on the role of editors of a major newspaper, choosing stories of various general types (politics, sports, entertainment, etc.) to run in their respective newspapers. Hilarious headlines stream in on the fax machine and it is up to you to decide which ones to run with. How big should the article be? Is it worthy of the front page? Will competing newspapers run the same article? Should you place an advertisement in your competitor’s paper to take up valuable space? While making these decisions, the clock is running! The print deadline is drawing near and you have to get your finished paper done in time for printing. Will your newspaper have the largest circulation?

Two factors determine a story's worth: timing and size. The timing is relevant because the later in the game the story is run the more points it's potentially worth. But in this game (as in the real world) size is important, because only the biggest story of any given headline will score.

This is a 3 - 4 player game with a playing time of approximately 90 minutes.

Price: $59.95
Preorder Price: $41.97
Preorder Bonus: To Be Announced

Counts as 2 ballots for "Free Games for a Year" contest!
_________________________________________________________________________

Y'know, I can't deny that I would love to have a shirt that says "Extrablatt" on it.

or a shirt with a valley games logo on the front and on the back it says "I ordered from Valley Games and they delivered!" (kinda headline style to fit the release)

Hope you find the humour in that.

Not sure about anyone else, but an upgraded player aid that is made of better material and/or looks nicer compared to the standard one would be an incentive to get an early special edition. As you can tell, I like nice player aids.

It would be possible to add another sheet of variant headline tiles as a bonus, but I don't know what theme one could use to make them really "special".

Player aids would be useful, but I would highly suggest that Valley adds them to the box as a standard thing (particularly if they use the same scoring system that the original did, it's a bit complicated) rather than add them as a pre-order bonus.

I honestly wish I could come up with something cool for the pre-order folks, but nothing is coming to mind right now.

Thread: Valley Games Reprint - Ideas for a preorder bonus

Hello again everyone,

The Valley Games team is looking for input on the upcoming reprint of Extrablatt. Of course, as you know, our version is called "Special Edition".

As you may also know, when a customer chooses to preorder a game at www.valleygames.ca, they are entitled to a discount, any contest that may be running, and any applicable preorder bonus that may come along with their game.

For Special Edition, we have some ideas of what we would like to offer. We would, however, like to ask the gaming community for some short-notice suggestions on what they would like to see for a preorder bonus. What thing or things would make the game that much more fun/interesting?

The only criteria we have is for something that isn't outrageously expensive (sorry, no gold bars), and that doesn't change gameplay.

Also, since we're just a few days away from the opening of the preorder program, we'll be looking at the best ideas received in the next 24-48 hours, after which time we will be making our decision. Who knows, maybe some Extrablatt fan has an idea that we haven't thought of!

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Chances are all the headlines/advertisements will be getting a near-total rewrite, so by the time this process is started I should have a much more concrete answer for you.

We're also looking at doing something nice with the "body" of the articles, but it's still in the experimental stage (you know, bubbling test tubes and lots of evil laughter).

Similar to how Columbia games sells sticker sheets, blocks, etc for their individual games.

I know one school of thought says that doing that would cut into the sales of the new version due to them not needing to upgrade. However I subscribe to the school of thought that suggests that those with the old version are more likely to buy the new version anyway since they already like the game and would want an improved version. Take it for me, I have Hannibal already AND I've reordered the new version. My friend Joe owns Titan and is very excited about the new edition, so there's the proof that it wouldn't hurt.

Just my thoughts...

-Jim

Thread: "Special Edition" - Reprint of Extrablatt

As you heard exclusively from Tom Vasel's "Dice Tower" (www.thedicetower.com), Valley Games is reprinting Extrablatt. Our edition will be called "Special Edition" and will be featured in many different languages (more on that below).

If the well-known games "Titan" and "Republic of Rome" were the main course of Valley Games' Classic Line, Special Edition would have to be considered the dessert. Long appreciated by those who could find it, and then were willing to translate it, we felt that it was high time for everyone else to discover this great game.

As you may or may not know, Extrablatt puts each player in the role of newspaper editor, carefully selecting the headlines that will make their front page. But space is limited, and the bigger the headline the less space an editor will have left for other important stories. As time passes more stories are received for publishing consideration, but what if you've already run out of space?

Special Edition will feature an English printing, with headlines that make sense and are of interest (and much like the original, can be a little silly too). Because we want everyone to enjoy this game, we'll be printing several different sticker sheets with alternate stories in different languages. If you are a French speaker, for example, just stick on the alternate stickers for a French version. In fact, it is our plan to have headlines that are "regionalized" so that the game keeps the same flavour as the original. I'll be watching this thread and answering as many questions as I can.
