I've found it in a German internet shop and it'll cost me the grand total of 6 euro wich according to this online converter thing is about 7.50 dollar. or (not knowing where you're from) about 5 GBP.

At that price it seems worth taking the gamble.
The game sure looks great, asfar as graphics go.

thanks for your advise.
I thouroughly enjoy this game. How much is it going to cost you? It is not one of those games that I pull out every day but it is a game that I thoroughly enjoy this game. Simple, straightforward, short on time, and fun.

Do you like games of area control (with a twist) and ccg elements (being that each card has text and optional uses)? Thats what this is.

Thank you!

I've located this game on a shops website.
Very pleasantly priced and the theme interests me, so I decided to check out what it is all about.

I must admit I am a total novice where this kind of game is concerned.
I'm used to moving armies on big game boards so with that in mind this all just looks boring. A card game? hm...

Don't missunderstand, the graphic side of it all looks fantastic and would be another reason for buying it. But I just don't get it.
Ahwell after all, it's at the end of yet another day, so maybe I'm just a bit to tired to catch on.

So while I promisse you all I'll check out the rest of the reviews to find out more. Let me simply ask you.
Will I regret taking the gamble of simply buying this, or will I really enjoy it once I've opened the box and given it a go.

The whole theme of the game and the graphics surely make me want to go and like it.

I saw this game on a website and decided to check it out on BGG.

Actually after reading all this, I may go and buy it.
Not sure if we'll like it as we've never played this kind of cardgame.
But looking at the beautifull pictures, the artwork alone seems allready worth it.

I'll have to buy a german version though, well typical of german shops they sell.... exactly, german versions.

This means I'll probably be busy translanting the cards for the benefit of the other players.

Ahwell, nothing on telly anyway.
I bought a bunch of dice from Chessex to use as shown in the pictures above. You can get a dice block of 36 12mm dice in standard opaque colors for about $5 each. The blocks of 16mm dice (12 per block) are about $3.50.

Thanks for your kind comments about Camelot Legends, everyone. Regarding the game's overall rank, I am simply happy to see that so many have rated the game favorably and expressed their enjoyment for the game. If some do not enjoy this type of game, or if the level of analysis / info tracking is too burdensome for some, then I can certainly see where they are coming from and we have taken these critiques into consideration when working on other games over the past four years.

To Alan: Back when we were working on Camelot Legends, most of our playtesters were CCG players, and so the level of information tracking did not seem problematic to us. These days, we have a much larger pool of playtesters for our games, and we are careful to get a larger sampling of the gaming community.

That said, I am grateful to those who have posted special ways to track the game's information here on BGG because that means more people will be able to enjoy the game.

Thanks again, and keep on hunting the elusive Questing Beast!

Andrew

Thread: Reducing the number crunching: a pictorial suggestion for simplifying book-keeping

The problem stated

One of the criticisms frequently leveled at Camelot Legends is that there is too much counting of stats, re-calculating, and number crunching. Consider comments like these:
"I can see where people are annoyed by the text and the symbols and the recalculating. Those reasons alone will keep this game from rising to excellence, in my book."
"And you will be doing a lot of counting stats..."
"The problem is that the game is far too fiddly and math oriented. Far too much to keep track of for my taste. "
"...too much time spent constantly refiguring point totals saps the fun."
"I find the need to constantly add up attribute values and read special power texts really bogs the game down. "
Is it that bad? It has to be admitted that there's some truth to this. But don't give up on Camelot Legends just yet!

The solution described

There are ways to simplify the book-keeping. First we observe that each character has six abilities, which use both icons and colours:

How about using tokens to indicate permanent or temporary modifications to these abilities? (idea first suggested by Ava Jarvis). For example, if a character gets a +2 bonus to Combat, add two red counters to that knight. If a company gets +1 bonus to Adventure, add one blue counter to all the knights in that company. This makes it much easier to keep track of modifiers, and certainly is one step to making the book-keeping somewhat easier.

I used some old Risk tokens for this purpose, as pictured here:

Colours were used as follows, more or less matching the colour of the border around the ability icon:
Red = Combat
Black = Diplomacy
Blue = Adventure
Green = Cunning
Pink = Chivalry
Yellow = Psyche.

Here are some pictures from a Standard game, demonstrating how the tokens were used as ability modifiers.

I think it works rather well, and it certainly makes it relatively easy to keep track of modified abilities.

There are certainly more solutions worth considering. Some other gamers have used coloured dice in a similar way.

It's your choice, of course, what option you use. The bottom line is that there are options available if you want to find ways to simplify the book-keeping and number-crunching of this very thematic Arthurian game.

I could only criticize the graphics, since some colour and some symbols in the game are too close/similar to each other that you need to play in full daylight to avoid mistakes. But that's a minor detail.

I agree and I as well thought that it was a minor detail.

Why it is not higher ranked is sad as well. When I played the game for the first time I was Like "I have had this sitting in my closet and playing ____________ instead?????!! AH!"

Just a flat out fun game and I always loved the mythology surrounding Arthur and His knights.

Great game!

I am a fan of Camelot Legends too.

I don't understand why it's not in at least in the Top 200 of bgg rankings... imho it shows how many people give ratings based on trends more than based on the real value of the games.

I could only criticize the graphics, since some colour and some symbols in the game are too close/similar to each other that you need to play in full daylight to avoid mistakes.
Thanks for taking the time to compose this insightful review, Gregory. I am glad to hear you are enjoying the 3 - 4 player game, and that you and your wife are also enjoying the 2 player game. I have been pleasantly surprised to hear from many couples who play the 2-player game together. In fact, my wife and I were the two primary playtesters for the 2-player game.

Be sure to check out the official "Lords of Camelot" variant, as this increases the strategy level of the game quite a bit. You can download the variant here:

http://www.zmangames.com/products/camelot_legends/variants.h...

Thanks again, and I hope you continue to enjoy your adventures in Camelot!

Andrew

----------------------

Andrew Parks
Quixotic Games LLC

Thread: A neat suprise

Camelot Legends
My First Review!

INTRO:
Picked up a copy of Camelot Legends a few months ago and as I pulled the game out I was originally dissapointed because it was a card game in a format that I did not expect, but have been pleased to have sat down a few times since to play.

Camelot Legends is a card game where players are trying to earn victory points by completing quests. Each quest has a set of requirements on them if you will that you complete by putting together sets of knights that match or exceed the requirements listed. During the game players are adding new events, playing their knights, and moving them from one of three locations in an effort to complete quests. This will be discussed in detail more later.

Opening The Box:
Legends of Camelot comes in a nice sturdy box with some very good artwork on the cover of the box. One of the things about this game is flavor and the art work on the cards, rulebook, and box are covered with it. Upon opening the box the owner will find two shrinkwrapped deck of cards, three large location cards, and four player reference cards. The cards are in a decent card stock (the cardstock is good enough for the game and price). Also included is the rulebook for the game.

The Rule Book:
I will not go over the rules here, but I want to say that the rule book is well written and it took only a couple of read throughs before I felt comfortable to teach the game to a group of players. The rules are set up into two variations (beginner and advanced) and this set up works very well for this game by allowing a transition from the simpler cards in the game to the more complex. The rulebook also contains a nice compendix of all the characters included in the game with some additional flavor background information.

One thing that I would have liked to have seen is an example of play in the rule book. The rules in this game are pretty straight forward and I did not have to much trouble reading the book and then turning around and teaching someone else, but an example of play would have eliminated, probably, a few questions that I have.

Overall the rulebook serves its purpose and does an above average job of it. This game is not that complicated to play. I took 15 minutes to go through the book twice and then taught our group to play.

Gameplay:
The box says the game takes 60-90 minutes to play and this of course is determined by how many people that you have play. I have found that a 2 player game for us takes les than the noted 60 minutes. I can actually play a 2 player game in 30 minutes which is nice for replayability.

The game can be played with 2 - 4 players and I think the game works the best with 3 or 4 but the 2 player game is fun and for me it is the one that gets played the most (between my wife and I). The one thing that you do not have with just 2 players is a sense of having to make harder decisions on where you are going to focus your knights because in the two player game you are just responding to each other, BUT the random events eleviate this some by the simple fact the players do not know what is going to happen next. There is enough unknown and ebb and flow for me that I enjoy the two player game.

When playing the game you are collecting sets at the three locations (Camelot, Cornwall, and Perilous Forrest) in an effort to try and win quests at each location. Every persons turn a new quest is added to a location so the quests are always evolving. To earn a quest a player must match the skill points required by the quest. Each knight has six different skills and certain knights modify skills as well as certain allegiances, more on this later. For example: the quest the Black Knight requires 12 combat points to complete you would have to get a combination of nights to that location that meets or exceeds the points required. When you do you do not win the quest immediately but have to wait till your next turn to pick it up, and I like this because it allows players to respond and makes you strategize over your company of knights to make sure they are going to survive.
Keep in mind everyone else is trying to do the same thing. Lots of strategy in this game. At its heart Camelot Legends is a set collecting game with lots of flavor, and CCG feel by the fact that the cards have special abilities that they can use as well.

The gameplay continues this way until the Final Event, and at the end the players add their scores from the quests one, each quest gives victory points, and the highest score wins.

The Cards:
I want to spend a moment talking about the cards themselves because they are the core of the game. The cardstock is nice and is perfect for this game. There are two different types of cards Quests/Events and Characters. Each card represents a character from the Arthurian Legend, and a quest that they would have went on from the stories. Great artwork and flavor text are represented on each card. Theme is all over this game.

I mentioned earlier about the knights and their six different stats and modifiers and I want to take a moment and talk about this. You the player will be spending more time dealing with the stats and modifiers than with anything else in this game as you try to complete quests because it is the combined stats of a group of knights at one location that win quests. The stats follow the theme (combat, chivalry, psyche, diplomacy, adventure, and cunning)but what happens during a game is that there are so many knights on the table and you throw in a couple of modifies and trying to keep track of waht someone has becomes hard. This is the biggest gripe that I have about this game, but there are some good ideas on BGG to deal with that and one is to use colored chips to mark the cards that are modified.

Who Would Enjoy This Game?:
If you like the theme for one, but especially if you like set collecting with a twist this game is fun. Easy rules and easy to teach and understand with nice reference guides included for each player. My wife regularly asks for this game becasue of the short playing time and simple rules.

Final Thoughts:
Overall a good game. I gave it a 8 on BGG ratings and it finds its way to the table. As I said the only real gripe I have is with the lost feeling one can get with lots on knights on the table with modifiers floating around, but you can get over this with some ideas presented on BGG.

For me money well spent.

Thank you!

To Bonnie: I'm glad you found this game again! Since I originally wrote this review I have been able to find a third player. The game still plays nicely but there is a bit more angst involved as you compete to finish an event only to have it snatched away from you at the last moment. Adding the third player forces you to make harder decisions on where to play your knights.

I also noticed in the few games we played that the point differences going into the last round usually ends in a "king maker" scenario. This may change the more we play it though.

To Andrew: I tried the variant. Wow! We love it. From here on out, it is now a standard when we play. Thanks!

To Greg: Was there a particular reason that you didn't like the game?

Thanks for the review, William. I'm glad to hear you and your wife enjoyed the 2-player game. My wife and I often playtested the 2-player game during the game's early development.

Be sure to check out the official Lords of Camelot variant when you get a chance. It reduces the luck factor of the game dramatically. You can download the variant here:

http://www.zmangames.com/products/camelot_legends/variants.h...

To Bonnie: Make sure you toss that dusty shrink wrap in the trash and get playing! I hope you enjoy it.

To Greg: Get that game out of the rubbish bin! King Arthur commands thee!

Thanks,

Andrew

-----------------------

Andrew Parks
Quixotic Games LLC

Thanks for reminding me that this game has been gathering dust in my closet, as well--and has been for a good 18 months now. Good to know that it works with two players, too, as that's probably how I'll have to play it. Time to dig this one out.

Thread: A tactical card game with an Arthurian theme that really works!

Note: This is a short analysis based on my experience with Camelot Legends, it is by no means meant to be an intensive analysis of every aspect of the game.

In short, this gorgeous game is a nail biter right to the very end. I have only gotten the chance to play this as a two player game, so my opinion may be skewed somewhat.

It seems as though sword and sorcery themed card games are a dime a dozen these days. So when I initially bought this one a few years back, I looked at the cover art, read the back of the box and nonchalantly tossed it into the cavernous maw of what I like to call “my games library”. I then promptly forgot about it. Then one day, my wife decided to relocate my collection to a more advantageous location… in other words, I lost my closet. and while I love my new location, what I love even more is that it brought to my attention, the plethora of shrink wrapped games that were gathering dust in the far flung corners of said “games library”.

So I tear off the shrink wrap and shuffle a few decks while my wife reads the instructions aloud. Within a few minutes I am immersed into the world of Merlin, Morgan and Arthur and half a minute later I realized what a monumental mistake I had made by ignoring this one. The game play is clean, engaging, strategic and down right fun. Overall, you are competing for victory points. These are represented by events that take place in one of three basic locations; Camelot, Cornwall and the Perilous Forest. I say “basic” because with the advanced rules, a few more come into play. These events are won by assembling a company of Knights. Each with his own strength and weaknesses which are measured using 6 traits; Combat, Diplomacy, Adventure, Cunning, Chivalry and Psyche. If you meet the requirements of a challenge, you get to claim it, thus garnering you the much needed victory points and usually, something else, like trait bonuses, extra cards, etc.

Earlier I made the claim that this game was a nail biter… and it is. Each game came down to a slim victory by 1 or 2 victory points. Up until the final turn, it was anyones game, and that (in my opinion) is cause for celebration. I would highly recommend this game to anyone who loves Arthurian lore or tactical game play.

-Will

That is how I have played, and I would never have imagined it might be wrong.

Hi, Glaucio. I can see where you're coming from, and your idea makes perfect sense. For what it's worth, the reason for the ability we intended (i.e., both lovers get to move for free) is the concept in medieval romance that love provides a sense of mutual uplifting for both lovers, and therefore what would normally be a hardship (trouncing around the countryside) becomes a pleasure instead.

The interpretation that one merely follows the other implies that the love is nearly one-sided. But in Gottfried's "Tristan" (where the Love Potion comes from), both Tristan and Isolde drank from the potion, and so both were equally enamored of the other.

Thanks for the cool discussion!

Andrew

---------------------

Andrew Parks
Quixotic Games LLC

This is quite brilliant, Universal Head. Thanks for compiling this!

There is one important error on the card, though:

"Shuffle the main Event Deck (including white, blue and if desired, red
icon events) and stack a number of Event Cards equal to the number of
players face down on top of the Final Event card."

The number of Event Cards is not "equal" to the number of players. It is determined by the number of players when you reference the chart in the Rulebook.

You might consider adding this chart to your reference sheet.

Thanks again!

Andrew

---------------------

Andrew Parks
Quixotic Games LLC

Which version of Acrobat Reader are you using?

Also, you can try to download it from Z-Man's site here:

http://www.zmangames.com/products/camelot_legends/lords_of_c...

Thanks!

Andrew

---------------------

Andrew Parks
Quixotic Games LLC

I think I'm understanding this right, but just to make sure...

If I choose to use both my card actions to move characters, the rules seem to indicate that I could move a total of four character cards (as long as they moved in pairs, each pair moving together to a location).

Am I understanding this correctly?
TIA - Stephen

Hi, KK.

Lady Etard would prevent your knight from participating in the Tournament of Logres.
Thread: Re: Siege Perilous and Discarding

Hi, Lukas.

When a Character is targeted by the Siege Perilous, he can use his "discard self" special ability and remain in play. It makes characters like Sir Bors (and, if you can manage it, Sir Mordred!) much more powerful.

In the specific case that you describe (a Character using his special ability before Siege Perilous is completed), the Character still gets to stay in play if the discard effect is at the end of the turn (such as with Sir Bors).

Thanks!

Andrew

-----------------------

Andrew Parks
Camelot Legends Designer
Z-Man Games, Inc.
webmaster@njkingdom.com

What happens when a player completes Siege Perilous, and targets a knight such as Sir Bors, who has used his special ability to add +3 Psyche to the company already this turn? Is he still discarded at the end of the turn or does he stay in play?

If he remains in play, can he use his special ability and remain in play every turn, or is he unable to add +3 Psyche to the company because he cannot fulfill the requirements of the action?

Glad to hear you enjoyed the variant, Dane. Our group always uses the variant as well. If we ever go into a second edition, this will become an official rule of the game.

For those who haven't tried the variant yet, you can download it here:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/file/10285/lords_of_camelot.pdf

Thanks!

Andrew

-------------------------

Andrew Parks
Camelot Legends Designer
Z-Man Games, Inc.
webmaster@njkingdom.com

Thread: Lords of Camelot variant = excellent

After playing with the Lords of Camelot variant for a few games, we will no longer play without it. One of my more recent games saw me freakishly draw almost all the Lords in one game, whereas my opponent drew none. Normally I would have walked away with the game, and while things still looked good for me in the mid-game, eventually she went on to win by 2 victory points.

Needless to say that while I already liked the game, I'm loving the new balance that the Lords variant brings.

Thread: Re: Our three house rules

Herr Niemand wrote:
We loved the beginner game, with all its many Location Events in Camelot, Cornwall, and the Perilous Forest. However, when we moved on to the Standard and Advanced games, we were appalled by the sudden dearth of Location Events. We've played games where, I kid you not, less than a third of drawn Events were Location Events. The rest were Heraldic, Special, Bidding, i.e., Events that don't directly give VPs but just screw someone over.

Although I've played a few games with just a random draw of cards, we tend to prefer removing the Heraldic Events from the game entirely, then separating the bidding/special events into their own deck (including the two advanced locations), put the camelot/cornwall/forest locations into their own deck, then shuffle both decks. Then we draw some cards from the "special" event deck and some from the main event deck:

2 Player game - 5 cards from the "special" deck, 12 from the main deck
3 Player game - 6 cards from the "special" deck, 14 from the main deck
4 Player game - 7 cards from the "special" deck, 16 from the main deck

Of course this is only a personal preference because I too really enjoy those location events.
