It's the same game but with better production - the box is properly made rather than stapled together and the board is made of sturdy cardboard sections unlike the original which wouldn't lie flat. Also there is some reasonable artwork on the board rather than the very basic original. (It's available from Adamspielt as well).

Thread: A Walk Thorugh The Forest: Review of Waldschattenspiel

I got this game from a gentleman in Switzerland just recently. I am going to attempt to provide a review so others can determine if this game is for them or not.

The Gist of the Game

This game is for 3-7 players; one person is the antagonist and the remaining players are playing cooperatively against the antagonist player. The antagonist is attempting to "freeze" all of the elves (or some translators have said gnomes), while the elves are all trying to make it into the shadow of a single tree.

The Bits

You get a heavy clothpaper-like board, a rack (which is a dowel and a flat piece of wood, which is used to move a tea candle around), 6 dwarves in various colors, one die, 3 small trees (which are made of triangular wood pieces that slide together), 4 medium sized trees, and 3 large trees. What is not provided is a tea candle. The trees are a bit flimsy feeling, being light wood, so be careful sliding these together, so you don't break them. The elves have little felt hats that you can glue on. The board has a path of circles that lead around the edge and throughout the interior of the board. The box it comes in is also flimsy cardboard. The version I have is in this photo

. I noticed that I do not have a little plate to hold the candle; I did buy mine used for a Euro (plus 14 Euros shipping), so it may be incomplete - the photo also doesn't show the fuzzy matching color felt hats.

Set-Up

Put the tea candle on any edge circle, the antagonist places the trees on the board anywhere desired as long as they don't cut across the circle paths on the board. Light the candle and turn down the lights low enough such that you get clear distinct shadows from the trees. Then the antagonist player closes his or her eyes. The remaining players can place their elves behind any tree (i.e. in the shadow) as long as they are not at the same tree. NOTE: with fewer players, the farther these elves should be set apart.

Game Play

The game play is very simple, the antagonist rolls the die. He or she then uses the rack to move the tea candle along the path in one direction circle by circle. If you reach a fork in the path, you may continue along either direction. You may never reverse direction and double back along the same path. You can circle around and take the same path again. If the light uncovers an elf at any time during its movement or when it stops, that elf is frozen. It remains frozen even if it again falls into shadow until another dwarf comes along and meets it (touching it); it must be rescued by an unfrozen elf. This is the only time the antagonist should be looking for elves and that is to look for ones the light is revealing.

Once the antagonist is finished moving the tea candle, he or she closes his or her eyes and the elves move anywhere they want on the board. They may not move into the light or cut across a shaft of light.

Play continues until all elves meet up in one tree's shadow OR all elves are frozen.

Analysis

This is a simple, but fun game. Best probably with at least 4 people (so you have three elves - two seems to easy to meet up) with a parent as the antagonist and 5-8 year olds as the elves. I like the unique aspect of light and shadow within the game play. The game as it is played is stunningly beautiful.

Strategy

As the antagonist, stay as close to the center and near those elves you have frozen (you know they have ot be rescued). As the elves, move around the edges to meet up and within the shadows of larger trees; watch the directions the candle can take.
Thread: Play this game with a Zauberwald set

Waldschattenspiel is a bit hard to get hold of, but is great fun. However if you can find a copy of Zauberwald you can play the game very nicely using those components (and that game is not too bad in its original form either). See "Shadowy Forest" under Zauberwald for details.

Thread: Re:Rule Question: Dice for Dwarves?

them (#48784),

Dwarves can go ANYWHERE on the board, and are not restricted to spaces. Their only restriction is that they have to stay out of the light. Usually, they need to stick close to the trees, and the best place to hide is within the nooks formed by the two tree pieces. Harder for light to get to you that way.

Thread: Session Report

WALDSCHATTENSPIEL. Fellow players included Kyle, Teri the Taco Soup Cooker with Stunning Eyes, Kevin, ...and that's all I can recall. It was dark, after all. Oh my goodness. As a gamer's game, it fails. But it fails delightfully. This game is played in a very dark room. The components consist of many wooden trees, seven pawns, a candle, and a funky little candle pusher shovel thing. Here's the deal: The responsible adult supervision lights the candle, and places it on the forest path. All us dwarves (pawns) hide behind trees while the responsible adult supervision isn't looking. When we're done, we call the responsible adult back to the table. He rolls the die, and uses the funky little candle pusher shovel thingy to move the candle along the forst path. If any dwarves are illuminated by lightrays, regardless of how faint, that dwarf is "frozen".
Call it freeze tag, if you will. That dwarf can be frozen once he goes back into shadow by another dwarf coming along and pushing him a little. Dwarves are allowed to move as far as they want while the responsible adult
supervision isn't looking, as long as they stay in shadow the whole time. Game ends either when all dwarves are frozen or all dwarves congregate together under one tree.

This game was an absolute joy. Not something that is skillful, but lordy it was fun. The game is suitable for children age 5 and up, plus one responsible adult supervisor. Playing this game, I felt all the excitement
of my first trip to Disneyland. It was positively magical. All us dwarves managed to thwart the responsible adult supervision. It was GREAT. And promptly added to my MUST BUY list. While I don't see it hitting the table
often, it's unusual and fun and PERFECT for late nights.
