Thread: Customized Cards!

Hey All,

So I played this as a teen-ager and of course we thought it was oh so cool to be partying as we played. We had a regular group of friends and played it enough that I made up my own cards to add into the game. It was stuff about what happened to us, or stuff in the news about weed and busts and such. I remember it added a lot to the game for more variety, but mainly for laughs and to get a discussion about one of our friends going.

I just wrote my friend who I know still has the old game we use to play to see if the cards are still in there?

I was just wondering if others had ever made their own cards for this one?

Not sure if I am ready to play it again, but I thought it would be cool to post pictures of the old cards I made for the game when I was 16 or something, so over 20 years ago.

Game On'

Thread: Re: Dealer McDope: The Straight Dope Review

Loved it when I was in High school, and we partied way to much to this one.

As far as theme goes, if people are not into partying they will not want to play this one. It is a great theme for stoners though, and a very good party game, for adults. Remember when this was made High Times had centerfold of Cocaine, a razor, and a rolled up $100 bill, so times where a lot different back then.

I am glad to see some one review this one, one of my old friend still has our old game from way to long ago, it even has the homemade cards we made for it, so it is kinda cool to look at and see what we where like way back then ( from the cards we made ).

At last I can own this w/o it costing an arm & a leg. Strange they've got it under "Books (Hardcover)" though. Thanks for the heads-up!

Thread: Dealer McDope: The Straight Dope Review

Dealer McDope: The Straight Dope Review

Note: If you are a huge fan of the Freak Brothers then you will want this game immediately!

Components:
1.	Game is made up of a gloss-coated paperboard, five player tokens, money, bust/karmic/deal cards, two dice, and mine came with suicide punch. Components are as low budget as it gets. The cards are paper thin, serrated edges, one color on one side, and some are blurry (thought I had a knock-off copy). The player bits look like something out of a five cent gumball machine (think late 1970’s), the board will be destroyed after a few plays if one is not careful (my first copy was). The money is green on the back, light green on the front, and again some of the pictures are a bit out of focus. Many of the cards and money bills contain crooked printing and over-all this game is as low budget as it gets. Grade: D for Quality
a.	I have seen five copies of this game and the player token/bits were different for each game. I have been told it depends on the edition and batch but I have no way to confirm this. I have/had two of the 1993 black box versions.

Theme:
2.	This game’s theme is based on the Freak Brothers Comics so it is simple: score drugs; sell enough drugs to make money, and then party. Think of this as mix between the mechanics of Monopoly, Life, drinking party games, and a humorous simulator of the life of a drug dealer. (Before there were computer games that did this). If you are a Freak Brothers comic reader, the game is dripping in theme, and the various highs and lows will seem familiar and funny. The theme is great for a Freak Brother fan, but may not translate to people who know little about the Freak Brothers.
a.	If you intend to play this as a drinking game or another “indulgence” there are plenty of locations where you are expected to consume libations, orange sunshine, get ill, gigabush, or other items of one’s choice. Grade: A when I was 16; C for the recovered; F for those who find drug and alcohol humor offensive or boring.
b.	Side note, there is some foul language in this game and extremely sexist content. When I was young I found it funny, but now I could do without misogyny. I am not politically correct, but if I gave you an example of what bothered me this review would not get printed.

Goal(s):
3.	When I played this game with friends we would always choose various goals.
a.	The winner is the person who has the most money after twenty turns.
b.	The winner is the person who runs out of money last.
c.	The winner is the person still conscious.
d.	The winner is the person who earns a particular dollar amount first.

Mechanics and Depth:
4.	The mechanics of the game are simple so I would say the game play is light, the rule difficulty is very light, and the theme is heavy. Roll the dice, move your bit, resolve the location’s storyline. The storyline might earn you money, take some of your money, earn you a card, or earn you the opportunity to buy or sell drugs. There is not a large amount of depth in the game in regards to keeping track of multiple goals. You can make drug deals, score drugs, and go on trips to locations like Peru where the risk/reward of drugs, danger, sex, and cops is high. If someone plays conservatively they could still loose all their money in an instant. I have tried to play the game with some kind of strategy involved, and I must say the best strategy is just to enjoy. You can be a clear leader in the game and two minutes later have nothing. Grade: C-

X-Factor:
5.	Some games have an X-factor: something that is compelling, draws you in, keeps your interest, or irritates you. I still find this game compelling when I am playing with the right people. It can be a humorous trip down memory lane, worth a few laughs, and is not too serious if you want a party game. For those who are worried that this game glorifies drugs, it does but after I play this game the last thing I want to do is score anything. The idea of getting busted, which happens frequently in this game, just does not seem appealing. Grade: B

Overall:
6.	I would have to rate this game between a B- and a C depending on my mood. I definitely would not play this game with just anyone, and I certainly have to be in the mood to want to play the game. In fact, because of the rarity of the game, I just sold it for $120 on e-bay and bought several new games like Twilight Struggle. I would play it again if people asked me to, but it would not be my first choice. Grade: B-, C
