Thread: Re: 4 Player Draft Tournament

Thanks for the suggestion dudical. I chose to include all maseitai in order to make it possible to have two of the same piece. I also enjoy playing with skype, but I think there's a certain feel to staring at your opponent that you can't get when you're not face to face.

Hey Deebs, I enjoy playing the game over skype.
As for the draft, you need but one set of Maseitai for two boards:
1-Deal out 10 cards to each player.
2- Each player discards 3 cards face down to the player accross from them.
3- Add these 'new' cards to your hand and discard final three from your hand of 10.
Now each player has 7 different Maseitai on the board. It looks cooler, and plays better
-Dude

Thread: 4 Player Draft Tournament

I just love Navia Dratp and have done since I found the game a couple of years ago. Since then I've been collecting the pieces and now I finally reached my goal of getting 2 full sets of all Maseitai.

However, during these two years I've hardly ever played in real life. My wife hates chess and is intimidated by the fact that I used that comparison when I introduced the game, and my competitive friends don't want to play since they think I'd have too much of an advantage since I've known the game for so long.

Just recently I managed to convince my closest gaming friends to come over for a tournament. Hoora! I spent many nights at work (yes, I work shifts) thinking about what format to use for the tournament and I finally decided that we'd have a Draft Tournament.

I was expecting 5 of my friends to show up, so I prepared by setting up three boards and lining up all 88 Maseitai from my collection on my kitchen table. It was an awesome sight. Two of my friends however cancelled but Niklas, Rasmus and Samuel showed up ready for some Navia.

Only one of them had played before, so we started off by introducing the rules. Fortunately they're pretty simple, but I also wanted to explain several of the Maseitai's abilities since we were going to draft our armies. When they all were ready we started the draft. We used a simple draft scheme since we're all old CCG-ers and ended up with an army of 10 Maseitai each (7 are used in the game and we had a small sideboard for tweaking the army between rounds). Everyone got to pick the Navia that they thought was coolest as well.

At this point we were eager to get started. The draft was a great way to select armies but it took quite long, especially since my friends wanted to think long and hard between all choices since they weren't familiar with the pieces. I felt pretty confident with my army that had a good mix of control (Midrah), cheep/mobile (Viskunmateus), and heavy Maseitai.

Since there were only 4 of us we decided to play everybody against each other. We randomized the game order and set off. My first game was against Rasmus who had played the game with me before. We both played a very disciplined game without anyone making any mistakes. In fact, we were fighting for every inch of the board for a LONG time, but finally after two and a half hours he got my Navia cornered on one side of the board and could eventually close me down.

Niklas won his first game against Samuel with an army of two Gyullas Turtles bringing home the crystals.

At this point we realized the games took a lot longer than expected. We decided to just go directly into a final between Niklas and Rasmus and I played Samuel for third place.

Samuel suffered from inexperience in the draft because he had selected an army that was a bit weak. Each piece was good individually but together it was just a bit light-weight and I took the game fairly easy.

In the grand final Niklas muscled down Rasmus' army for the glory. Niklas final army was:
M003 - Hamulus Garuda
M007 - Tiny Kiggoshi
M010 - Moses
M012 - Gyullas Turtle
M012 - Gyullas Turtle
M023 - Hansa
M024 - Kapinahs

WHAT I LEARNED FROM HOSTING THIS TOURNAMENT
1) A draft is a lot of fun, but takes time.
2) Plan for long games (1.5 - 2 hours).
3) Inexperienced players can quickly learn the game and compete in a tournament.
4) Playing the game IRL is a whole lot more fun than playing the game online.

Actually with a shharp Exacto knife they cut not bad

and I wasn't suggesting alterig, rather just a straight proxie.

For the mos part Dreamblade minis are cleaner looking that ND. Some of the ND are rather I'm not sure of the word, but overall the two match pretty well in my mind

D&D minis are a smaller scale,

Thread: ND Maelstrom figs

Hmmm,
Some of the Dreamblade figs are of decent quality, but others are a bump on a log
But the few that I have attempted to alter with blade and pliers are a real pain. So, I'll look
for some good sized D&D mnis that could fit the bill.
Hopefully I'll get an ok from Bandai to produce my own figs some day

That's a good idea Bear. Do you have a link to images of those dreamblade figures?

The Maelstrom figures still need play testing.
Sprite, Zola, and G4 need a cost increase and some tweeking. Sprite should not have one of it's invoke dots behind it because in play he could take, and invoke to move back a space (turned out to be pretty vicous)

I just had the idea of using Dreamblade minis as possible Navia home builds

would any of them fit with the mini ideas presented here?

If we established a set list of proxy figs, Dreamblade 'A' is used for ND idea "X" it would create a general template for everyone to follow

Went through Dreamblade, would suggest the following could work:

Lunar Handmaiden
Saint of Roses
Steelborn Lion
Zungar Bodyguard
Chrysalis Spinner
Relentless Eviscerator
Armadillo Sheieldbearer
Mhjina
Dreadmorph Ogre
Ekkya Wayfarer
Forgeblind Punisher
Virtuous Maiden
Cyclopean Sprite
Murderous Beserker

The above link will take you directly to the pdf. You can print the dials out, and paste them on other figs to try them out. I'll post some more images in the gallery when I get a chance. Proteus should be a 15 rather than an 8.
Tell me what you think. I sent the file to Koichi and will tell y'all what he thinks as soon as I hear back.
Keep playing,
-Dude

There really aren't all that many pieces (you're only missing 5 from the first set), and at this point they're fairly cheap. After a few games with what you've got, you could try making up some proxies for the missing pieces (the stats are on www.naviadratp.net) and see which ones you like.

Hmmmm,
I have never felt a need to bid in Navia. Everything seems so well balanced. It would also take a bit longer to get started.
Thread: Bidding for Maseitai

Another thing that I've been wanting to try out is bidding for your army.

Each player gets 60 gyullas, and a priority token is given to a random player.

Then N random cards are placed face up on the table (where N equals to the number of players). After looking at the revealed cards, all players make a closed bid with their gyullas. Then all players reveal their bids simultaneously. The player with the highest bid gets to select one of the revealed maseitai cards first, followed by the player with the second highest bid and so on until all the cards have been taken (i.e. all players have taken a maseitai).

If two or more bids are the same, you check who has the priority token. The player with the priority token has priority over the player to his (or her) left, who in his turn has priority over the player to his left and so on.

When the N cards have been selected the player with the priority token passes it to the player to his left.

This is repeated at least 7 times (depending on the number of players and pieces available) and finally each player discards extra pieces to create an army of 7.

Example:
Emil, Sven, Annika and Johan are sitting around the table (in the named order) and they have one full set of grays (44 maseitai). They decide to use Deebs' bidding system to distribute the pieces so each player gets 60 gyullas and they decide to give Emil the priority token since it is his birthday. They also agree on using all 44 maseitai, so they will have 11 bidding rounds in total.

The first four cards are turned up and they are: Gyullas Turtle, Olip, Gilgame II and Viskunmateus. The players select their bids and reveal them simultaneously:
Emil - 4
Sven - 5
Annika - 15 (she really loves Viskunmateus and wanted to make sure she'd get him)
Johan - 5

Annika bid the highest so she gets to pick first, and she takes Viskunmateus. Sven and Johan are tied, but since Emil has the priority token, Sven has priority over Johan. Sven picks Olip and Johan picks Gyullas Turtle. Finally Emil picks Gilgame II (surprise...)

(note that even if Emil bid the lowest, he still has to pay those gyullas and only has 56 gyullas left)

The priority token is then passed on to Sven for the next round and the procedure is repeated until all 11 bidding rounds are completed.

Finally each player has 11 maseitai and they discard 4 each to create their final army.

Thread: Re: The Navia Draft:

Thanks for the post. I have actually been planning to do something similar in an upcoming get-together, since I'm the only one who owns pieces.

However in my draft, cards will be dealt to each player who select one of the cards and pass the rest to the next player. They then select one of the cards that were passed on to them and then pass the remaining cards along and so on.

For example, with six players I would do the following. Bring two sets of grays with cards. Randomly distribute 6 cards to each player. The players take a card and pass the rest on clockwise. This is repeated until no cards remain. Then I would distribute 6 new cards to each player who select a card and pass the remaining cards counter clockwise (and repeated until each player has 12 maseitai).

Finally the players discard down to an army of 7.

Thread: The Navia Draft:

The Navia Draft is a great way to get each player a different team very quickly.
One person needs to bring a full set of figures and cards.
Deal out 10 cards to each player. Players discard three that they do not want to use.
As a fun twist, you can pass the discarded cards face down accross the table. Players add one anothers cards to their hand and discard any three they want.

You will get some great combos that you had never thought of, and will have many great games to come.
I've had a lot of luck with this, and it has become the standard practice in my area.

Another very nice thing is that every Maseitai on the board is different.

Give it a try and tell me how it goes
-Dude

I usually add "two players only" to the list of requirements, although that then excludes Chinese Checkers.
