Thread: Re: Availability?

This is quoted from Studio Denmark Forums:

It is true the Haunted Woods and Den of the Wererats have been out of print for some time. What happens is that Atlas Games does a print run of 5000 or so copies. When these sell out they wait until there are enough back orders to cover the reprint cost before they do a reprinting. And also they try to double-up Dungeoneer print runs when possible to save costs (that is print multiple sets at a time).

Since no other sets are currently out-of-print there may be a bit of a delay in reprinting Haunted Woods and Den of the Wererats. I do not have an estimate when that may be. There are currently no plans to combine Haunted Woods and Den into a single set (though I have speculated about it).

This is a feature on all Entrance cards included in every set. This is often overlooked and I'm surprised when criticisms about hard Quests come up because they can always be cycled.

I would recommend you try these following variant options:

1. Pre-Build the Map. This introduces a lot more strategy into your game.

2. "Fixed 3 Movement", OR "Fixed 2 Movement; Tip hero for extra Movement" rule. This eliminates the problem where higher-level heroes have too many Movement Points, thus making it too hard for lower-level heroes to catch up.

Thread: Our First Dungeoneer Game

After much research here on the geek I decided my girlfriend and I would like Dungeoneer so I went ahead and picked up Den of the Wererats because thats all my FLGS had.

We played last night and the game went pretty smoothly. There were very few questions that arose during the game. I think thats mostly because I spent a lot of time reading the FAQ and the 2.2 rules before we actually played. I did that because a lot of people were saying the rules were a little confusing.

Anyways on to the game. I started out explaning the different cards and the different phases of the turn. Shes pretty smart and picked it up pretty quickly. We were on our way. The game lasted about 30 minutes, she ended up keeping me really busy with all the good monsters while I couldn't seem to draw any. She had some good map draws, 1 that gave her her quest. Then she played a card that let her move a map card giving her another easy quest completion. She coasted to victory 3-0 on the quests.

Even though I got beat pretty handily we both really liked this game and I look foward to picking up some more of the expansions and playing some bigger/longer games.

Thread: Lots of new mechanics in a little single-deck

Before I start, if you're looking for reviews on the game play in Dungeoneer, you should read this review of "Dungeoneer: Tomb of the Lich lord" first.

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/article/1026948#1026948

In this review, I'll be going through the new mechanics that have been introduced into the game.

OVERVIEW
Dungeoneer: Den of the Wererats (DotWW) is the fourth deck in the Dungeoneer series and my favourite one next to TotLL. It's only a single-deck, but it comes with so many innovative card mechanics that it plays just as intensely on its own or combined with another Dungeoneer set.

First off, it's a city-themed set, so expect dark alleys, dodgy locations, and so on. Out of the three new Heroes introduced, I feel that only the "Darkling Thief" seems to fit the theme best, while the other two Heroes are so-so.

Being a single-deck, the Map Cards form a very small playing area (10 Map Cards!) but I've found this not to be a problem. If anything, the close quarters give you more opportunities to challenge your opponent's Hero with your own Hero. I've played many close, tight games with just this deck, where the winner is just one step ahead of his opponent.

HEROES
Durin Ironthumb (Dwarf Guard) Vermin Halt: pay Glory equal to the Peril value of 1 Vermin attacking you; that Vermin returns to its player's hand or Pack. Limit oncer per turn.
Your regular pest control officer. Durin is a safe hero to play in Den, but his ability just means that Dungeonlords will try throwing more non-vermin at him.

Bel Brewspirits (Human Alchemist) Brew Potion: on your turn, you may pay 3 Glory to take 1 Potion from the discard pile and put it in your hand. Limit once per turn.
A friend mentioned that although he's fascinated with Bel's ability, he just can't get it to work. And no wonder - there's only two (count 'em) potions in the entire deck! But once you combine this deck with another deck that has some more potent potions (ie. Dragons), Bel becomes a lot more useful.

Sela Shadowknife (Darkling Thief) Streetwise: if you are on an Urban space at the end of your turn, you draw and keep 1 additional card during your Discard/Draw Phase.
My favourite in this deck, and definately the most useful. Having that one extra card in your hand opens up your options a lot more. However, Sela doesn't do too well in non-Urban spaces, so might not shine so well in combined deck games.

QUESTS
The quests in Den are all fairly standard Slay/Search/Threat/Escort stuff.

MAP CARDS
All Map cards have a nice, dingy feel to them, as befits a city-themed deck. More importantly, there is a new mechanic introduced in this deck called "Sewers".

Sewers
As you might know, Movement is key to winning in Dungeoneer. DotWW features 4 Map Cards that have a "Sewer Entrance" in the middle of them; 2 marked "A", and the other 2 marked "B". While on a Sewer Entrance, a Hero can travel to the other corresponding Sewer with 1 Movement. As you can see, some strategic placement of these Sewer Entrances can make the all difference to getting to your Quest locations fast.

ADVENTURE CARDS
And here's where the bulk of the new mechanics can be found.

Level-pumped monsters
Some monsters (particularly the wererats) can be pumped up. Although we've seen the "pumpable monsters" mechanic in "Dungeoneer: Vault of the Fiends", here it costs just 1 extra Peril to add the opponent's Level to the monster's stats. The result - cheap monsters that are still tough against high-level heroes.

Monster-to-Hero-attachments
One Peril card called "Lycanthropy" can be attached to a monster card. If that monster card hits a Hero, the "Lycanthropy" card is attached to that Hero, and he now suffers the effects stated on the card. Although innovative, I've never really seen it used well in any of the games I've played.

Self-Growing monsters
One Monster card called "Rat Swarm" actually accumulates tokens on itself whenever it makes a successful hit. Each token gives the swarm an additional attack and lifepoint in its next attack.

Permanent Dungeonlord Enchantments
DotWW introduces several new Permanent Dungeonlord Enchantments which stay in the game once played. These enchantments do not affect the player's Hero, and do nasty things from sucking away Glory from other players and converting them into Peril points, to giving a +ve modifier to creatures played by that Dungeonlord. One particularly innovative effect is "Vermin Proliferation" which allows you to rummage through the discard pile for Vermin monsters to resurrect.

CONCLUSION
DotWW is an excellent addition to the "Dungeoneer" series. Each new game mechanic ports over well to other Dungeoneer decks, which shows that a great deal of thought went into creating this deck. To a new dungeoneer player, I'd recommend trying a more basic set first like "Dungeoneer: Tomb of the Lich Lord" or "Dungeoneer: Haunted Woods of Malthorin". To a seasoned player, I'd highly recommend that you grab a copy of this.

Under the Quest:Chance section of the rules it states "If there is a cost to increase your chances, you may pay for and stack as many bonuses as you can afford, but each bonus only affect one attempt". So you could pay 6 Glory and auto-suceed.
Thread: Review of Dungeoneer: Den of the Wererats

This is not a how to play the game of Dungeoneer. If you are looking for reviews on the base game you can find them here:
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geekforum.php3?action=viewforum...

This is also a great list of all the expansions and their themes.
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist.php3?action=view&listi...

This will try and cover how this expansion fits in with the rest of the game or a stand alone game.

This is a single pack expansion card set for the game of Dungeoneer. It can be played as a stand alone game or added to other decks to enhance (hopefully) your gaming experience.

This deck revolves around a Wererat that is loose in city areas. The theme is a widerness (or outdoor) setting, but mostly takes place in city tiles. I like the addition of lots of city areas. Also there are sewers on the corridor areas which allow you to move under the city for expidited movement.

The expansion adds three new heroes for your Dungeoneer game: Darkling Thief, Human Alchemist, and Dwarf Guardian. Basically the thief can keep an extra card when on a city space, the Alchemist can pay to get potions from the discard pile, and the Dwarf can make you discard one of your vermin when attacked. All these mix well with the specfic pack and can also be used quite well if mixed with the other decks in the game.

As a single deck game it is rather lite and does not quite have the bite of the two deck games. It does play short and you can have most of your quests finished in a short amount of time. It should not be considered for teaching the game to new players as it adds new concepts of monster attchements (to pump the up or make them stronger), serwer movement, and upkeep cards. The upkeeps cards seem rare in this game and are a welcome addition for more seasoned players.
Although it does have its fair share of monsters there just does not seem to be enough of them around to kill another player. The monsters is does contain can be powerful and pumped up.

All in all, I think this is a great Expansion (and just that). The one time through as a stand alone and it just did not have the staying power of a full fledge game. But as an expansion for the other outdoor Dungeoneer titles, do your self a favor and get this one and enjoy the enhacements to your already great game.

We played for the first time tonight. These questions came up for us as well.

Where did the clarification on the arrow come from ? Is that a house rule or did atlas put it up somewhere ?

The clarification was how I felt it should be played as well and I think its a great idea. I was just curious of its origin.

Thanks,
Tony

Thread: Re: Holy Symbol Quest

From the Designers web site:
He posted these items to the forums.

Divine the Holy Symbol should have the standard text that is included on all Search type Quests:

To find the Quest roll 7+ while on any Urban space, adding +1 to your roll for each space you are from the nearest Entrance, each search attempt uses 1 movement.

You may also want to note the following for your game.

1)Wererat Lair should be a Portal.
Vermin Rage should be played during Dungeonlord (not Hero) phase

You can download the corrected cards here:
http://www.studiodenmark.com/images/hosted/DEN_errata.pdf

2)Zum's Dancing Arrow (clarification)

This isn't an erratta per se, but more of a clarification. Zum's Dancing Arrow says:

*: 1 target hero or monster of your choice in same space must overcome Magic Threat 5+ or take 1 wound.

Your Magic attack still inflicts 1 wound, this adds the effect of possibly hitting another opponent (or the same opponent again) in the same space in addition to that.

(* is the hit effect symbol)

Thread: Holy Symbol Quest

I can't recall the exact name of this Search Quest, but it's the one where you have to track down a holy symbol by rolling no duplicates with 4 dice.

It is, however, also marked as a "Search 7+" Quest with no information on what modifiers are applied to this Search roll. If there are no modifiers, the Quest is a tad difficult, obviously ...

Help, anyone?

Cheerio,
Maik

RaistlinMajere (#64293),

According to the rules the black bordered cards indicate dungeon cards, the white borders indicate wilderness cards.

This really only matters when making the map, so that the wilderness map and dungeon map are built separately.

You could still play white-bordered (wilderness) monsters into the dungeon. It is only for the map that this matters.

td

Gabusan (#62031),

Every card in the set is unique. That's right, every card! The reason for this is that you could combine 2 copies of Den of the Wererats to expand the game. The only thing you'd need to do is set aside duplicate Quests, and possibly duplicate sites (wilderness map cards that aren't roads) that you don't want to use.

10 map cards is just right for a quick 2-player game.

td

Gabusan (#62031),

Ten map cards is good for introducing people to the game. However, experienced players will probably only view this set as an expansion to the base game. I don't see how making copies of the alley cards will upset the balance of the game - it will just make the game a bit longer.

I just got my den by mail, and after a quick check of contents, I see there are only 10 map cards. Ain't that a bit lacking? Would it hurt balance if I make copies of the alley cards to make the city (or wilderness) a bit bigger?

The art of the new cards is wonderful, btw.

ammms (#55683),
Vault of the Fiends has a good mix of Melee monsters.

To mix them with a 1st edition set you'll probably need to use card sleeves, since the backs are different.

Den and Woods both have a fairly even ratio, but the heroes are weighted towards Melee.

td

I have bought the 1st edition of the "Dungeoneer: Tomb of the Lich Lord". I notice that in this edition, most of the monsters attack by means of Magic, which gives the player who used Drawf a very hard time.

I would like the game to be more balance by adding more monsters with meele attack. In short, which set should I get if I am going to buy one only?

crusher100 (#49431),
IS this expansion mixable with Tomb of Lich Lord and Vault of Fiends? Can be played by more than 2 players?

Yes.

The concept of Dungeoneer is that it is expandable, every set mixes with every other set and is 100% compatable.

If you wanted 6 players you could combine Den of the Wererats with Vault of the Fiends. If you wanted 14 players combine Tomb, Vault, Den, & Woods (the turns would be very loooooooooooooong!).

These smaller sets in fact create a small Wilderness prelude to entering the Dungeon (Tomb or Vault) when played together.

td

Den of the Wererats is a smaller set of 55 cards. It is designed for two players, and it is 100% compatible with other Dungeoneer sets so it may be combined with other sets for more players.

Features include:

1. Wilderness maps*. These do not mix with Dungeon maps, instead they form a separate map that links through a "Portal" (you can see the Portal symbol on the Tower of Malthorin map). So Wilderness represents "upstairs" and Dungeon is "downstairs".

2. Expanded rulesheet. It seems Dungeoneer will never have the "perfect" rules sheet, but this one has been expanded from the 2nd edition, a "2.1" if you will. The actual rules are the same except 1 significant change: declare attack form in the first step of combat (that's how everyone plays it anyway). Unfortunately this expanded rules sheet has left no room for the Campaign rules, so they will appear as a web enhancement along with a large number of other interesting optional rules.

3. 31 new Adventure cards, 3 new Heroes, 10 new Maps and 7 new Quests.

4. Variety of new mechanics including: Lycanthropy, Transform, "permanent" Banes, and finally cards with Upkeep.

*Den of the Wererats is set in a city or "urban terrain" which is a subset of the Wilderness maps.

td
