Not WotC.

But you are essentially correct - it appears that from the catalogue being presented to Hasbro management and board members that Heroscape is falling out of production. They've neglected to put any sort of future release schedule into 2009 beyond February, and what I've seen is that anything aside their bland fare of boardgames has received low priority and possibly cancellation.

Not that it should stop fans from trying to carry this game without corporate support. The mods and other things I've seen created for Heroscape absolutely give rise to many years of fanbase support, and should Hasbro be utterly retarded enough to sell or ditch Heroscape, someone should pick it up and run with it.

I was a much larger fan of the game for the first year I played it (and rabidly collected it, too, as well). However, over time I grew weary and disappointed of both the hassle of ownership (figure storage and map-creation and maintaining as well as the hassles of porting figures and terrain around from time to time) AND frustrated with the over-the-top amount of luck involved in the game.

I like the game and will definitely introduce my 7+ month old son to the game once he's older (as a gateway drug of sorts) but I no longer consider it terribly strategic or entirely balanced.

It has a GREAT community but it appears that WotC has basically canceled it without admitting it yet, in hopes of wringing every last drop dry of the well before the axe drops.

I think it's a fun game on the surface but when you dig deeper the luck-factor can really douse your initial enthusiasm.

Freshly turned 44 last month. Been playing HS with the family since '05(that's how us old guys talk). I want to join up just so I can be in the same "room" as Reapersaurus and Teamski. These guys are Legends in the Heroscape World. I would be honored to be counted in the same Company as these 2 esteemed Gentelmen and the 'ol Coffin-Dodger(a BGG legend as well). I'm gushing like a schoolgirl now...

Nice review.

I rate Heroscape highly for all the reasons you list. I have yet to play it against another adult but I play alot with my son, his friends, and my nephews. And it is perfect for that. The game is simple and fast enough for the kids to play well and contains enough variety, strategy and depth to keep me interested.

We love trying out new combo's of units and it is always neat to see the reactions when somene discover a new combo for the first time and see it tear up the opponents' army

I love what you say and how you say it! As a die-hard Heroscaper, it is always good to see someone new come into the fold.

A fine job voicing your opinion and viewpoint of the game. Yes, it is often overlooked as a "kid's game", but that is not the fault of how it plays, but as to how it was marketed.

I started buying this when it first hit the shelves, and have every expansion ever sold in duplicate. Do I think it is the best game in the universe?

You know it!

Fine writing, Scott. Keep on 'scaping!

Thread: Heroscape: All Others are Number Two, or Lower

When I think of Heroscape, it brings to mind one of my favorite movies of all time - Mystery Men. Mystery Men was released in 1999 accompanied by a phenomenally bad marketing campaign. The movie looked puerile, pedestrian, and crude, and I swore that I'd never waste any money on it - that is, until one of my buddies talked me into giving it a try. I found that I was not entirely wrong, but that on some level, the whole enterprise just worked - it was crude and puerile at times, but it was also campy, and funny, and sarcastic, and smart. So it is in honor of what has become one of my favorite movies that I bring to you my thoughts on Heroscape - why I've come to love this game in spite of itself and what elements take this game a step beyond most other fare on offer.

So let's get first impressions out of the way: the marketing for this game is not the best. I mean, when this is your public face:

then you're already in trouble. This game doesn't scream badass - it cries like a kid who just got pantsed and had his lunch money stolen. Even Mimring and Grimnak can't salvage this one. I must have passed over this game dozens of times at the local big box and, while I did pick it up once or twice, I couldn't get past two things: the juvenile marketing and the big old Hasborg logo stuck on the side.

Ok, I admit it - it's elitist and snobbish. But if I had done my research, I'd have learned that the guys behind this are the same ones that gave us things like The Queen's Gambit and Risk Black Ops. And when I did learn that, I began to pay a little bit more attention. Geekbuddy analysis came back promising - could I have misjudged this one? So when the opportunity came to trade some stuff that had been gathering dust for a load of HS swag, I jumped.

When the box arrived, I tore into it like a fat kid on twinkies. I was impressed - they packed a lot of plastic into that box. The minis were well made with surprisingly detailed paint jobs - in fact, I'd say excellent quality for a mass market game. The terrain was interesting, certainly unique - but we had an important hurdle to cross. Would it pass muster with the harshest critics in my house - my 7- and 9-year old boys?

Let's get one thing straight - this game has dragons. It has samurai fighting robots. It has an orc riding a GIANT FRICKIN DINOSAUR. It has everything except Disco Plumbers. Did it pass muster? You bet your sweet bippy it did.

Over the months since, we've played hours and hours of 'scape, and it doesn't get old. What keeps it fresh?

The Terrain: This is perhaps what makes this system the thing of beauty that it is. Modular terrain that can be taken apart and put back together in infinite combination, that's simplisitic enough for a 7-year old to handle but that can produce results like this:

Check. I don't think the terrain gets enough credit around here. Sure, the colors aren't completely realistic and the transition between levels is more like terrace farming than a sloping hill. But you can play on a different map every game, if you so choose - it would take ages to exhaust the possible maps that you can produce out of the box. Show me any other system where you get this level of versatility and variety out of the box, without the need for painting or spending your weekend scouring craft stores for small trees. Go ahead - I'm waiting.

Army Construction: This is a game that is both strategic and tactical at the same time - and it's hard to find that in combination. The strategerie is found in the crucial skill of army construction -putting together a set of units that fit a set points requirement but that also have synergy and provide a range of tactical options. This part of the game appeals to the ccg player in me - I love finding synergies and tuning a set of units to maximum efficiency, whether that set of units is made up of cards or Grut Orcs. Which brings me to -

Expansions: First, I need to get something off my chest. For those of you who are haters because of "collectability" but whose collections look like this:

SHUT YER PIE HOLE, YA HYPOCRITE.

(For the record, the user whose collection image I borrowed actually has good things to say about HS.) The expansions really make this game shine. It's really a system whose whole is greater than the sum of its parts - adding more terrain or more units opens up new possibilities and new strategies. Don't get me wrong - you can have a blast with just the Master set. But the fact that it is expandable is, in my opinion, a good thing. Also, there's no reason (besided OCD) to buy everything you see. Expansions are never supposed to go out of print, and are regularly rereleased - so have patience and that hard to find Heroes of Bleakwoode will be yours eventually.

Gameplay: So all of these things are useless without a game that plays well, and HS definitely has that. The reason, though, that I list terrain and army building as significant is that those two elements determine how successful a 'scaper you will be. The rules are simple and intuitive, and don't take themselves too seriously - want to check line of sight? Get behind the figure and look! Height is important, and the order marker system adds a degree of tactical depth. Don't get me wrong - ASL it ain't. You'll roll tons of dice and occasionally the backbone of your forces will go down to your opponent's Deadeye Dan. But it's a fast, intuitive hex-based minis game that rewards skill and patience more often than not.

Community: I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the great community that's sprung up around this game. This Saturday (Oct 18, 2008), National Heroscape Day will be celebrated at venues all across the USA (and a few international locations as well). It's supported in large part by the great group of folks at heroscapers.com. The community is a source of strategy, news, custom figs, events, and unique maps that have been vetted by the best players around.

The true test, I think, is how often the game hits the table - and, at the end of the day, this is the game that my boys ask for. We play Settlers, we play Carc, we tried Zooloretto and other family fare - but this is the one they want to play. They ask to break it out - and, really, what else is there to say?

I am barely qualified age-wise, with a mere 35 circlings of the sun, but I make up for it with my collection (16-ish master sets and multiples of everything else). Also, with my youngish age, my "Scape percentage" will be likely be higher than many in this club. I have been an avid Scaper for nearly 8% of my life.

Although my interest will wane in the lulls between waves or tournaments, I've been collecting since Wave 3 was new and still get giddy every time a new wave is delivered.

Which reminds me... I was recently at such a social function, and at the table were a lot of people that I didn´t know. We opened conversation the usual way, talking about our professions! These people were all highly educated with very well paid jobs. When it was my turn, I told them that I work with: "Human ressource management and development, with a focus on personal coaching"! All were impressed, assuming I made tons of money, untill I told them that I work at a club for kids, as a "paedagog", which is not the most prestigious, and certainly not the most well paid job in the Denmark! In fact, most people see us as nothing more than glorified kindergarten teachers...

Long story, but I guess it goes to show that it´s all about HOW you say it!

I´m getting off track here... better quit for now...
Later...

Pheew! This has certainly taken most of my Geeking time for the last couple of days... Anyone getting any Heroscape played?

On the side, I´m putting some Heroclix figures on Heroscape bases. I thought that if worst comes to worst, and there won´t be anymore official HS superheroes, I would be sure to have a handfull of homebrews... I bought the Fantastic Four, X-men and Hellboy B.P.R.D. box sets, plus a handfull of loose figures from my F.L.G.S.
I´m especially happy to have gotten my hands on the Cosmic Qartet!

Hey! I'm 35! Can I join? Maybe 35 doesn't seem that old to some folks, but last Monday, playing basketball with all of the high-flying young 20-somethings, I got a good reminder of how things used to be.

My Heroscape collection looks like:
5 Master Sets
2 Swarm of the Marro Sets
6 Castle Sets
5 Trees Sets
2 Lava Sets
2 Snow Sets
3 Marvel Sets

I don't have a bunch of people to play with though. My wife plays with me because she's nice. But my buddy from college is moving into the neighborhood next month so that should change things. Plus I have 3 small ones that will be playing with me someday.

Alas, I held out, but I too must request a humble admittance into this esteemed group. I have been around for 44 years and have been an avid HeroScape fan since the start. My collection of HeroScape stuff is embarassingly large and if I posted what I own I would be labeled an uber geek by geek standards. Let's just say, I have alot

I used to run a large weekly game of HeroScape accomodating up to eight players. It has been on an extended hiatus due to a home renovation project but will soon be running again in all its glory...

Here are some pics of some of our maps:

So, if this fraternity will have me as a member, I would be honoured to join.

Ahhh... It´s nice to see you making the room your own, Fred!
I hear you, and it seems a few trends or tendencies are manifesting among the people who have joined so far...

There are those who are perfectly happy having their name on the list, where that´s it, and that´s fine!

Then there are those who want to chime in from time to time, if and when they have something to say, but want no other obligations or commitment to the club. Normal BGG behaviour, bussiness as usual! That´s fine too!

Then there are those who got a bit excited about the possibilities of this club, and want a bit more! That´s fine too!
For those people, and ONLY those people, who make their wish to do so known, here, or by Geekmail to me, let´s try, for the sheer fun of it, to take turns being in the friendly, softtone spotlight, in the not too hot, but very comfy seat!
Prepare for Mrs. Raelins Heroscape class "Show and Tell", start musing over your essay, make your sopebox rant-proof, or whatever else takes your fancy, and we´ll do this, some time, soon...

I hope I´ve made it perfectly clear, that there´s no level of commitment, other that what you choose for yourself, but if anyone should still be sad that they signed up, or ever feel that way, just let me know, and you will be disctretely removed from the list.

Jesper

I humbly request membership in this august body of like minded individuals. I have seen more than fifty-two seasons of this world and I am an avid heroscaper.

I have indoctrinated two brothers, two nephews and my son to this marvelous pastime.

My mind is awash with excitment when I think of all the things I would like to try with Heroscape.

Congratulations!
Your storry seems a lot like my own.
After having played with the basic set, a lot, I wanted more!
U.S. prices seemed reasonable, but shipping more or less doubled the cost, making any new purchases out of the question! I started printing out cards from Hasbro´s HS homepage, using stand-ins, but this just didn´t feel right... I wanted those little plastic soldiers, and I wanted them ALL!
(My girlfriend remembers this period less fondly then I do! I guess the difference between excitement and obsession, is in the eye of the beholder! She loves HS too btw!)
The first break came when a fellow Geek voluntered to help, and then slowly HS product began finding it´s way to european web stores. I have even had people going on vacation in the states, bring me back stuff...

So, over the course of the last couple of years, I´ve slowly bought everything, and I´m still excited when something new arrives, even if it´s just another set of Orcs!

If you do some cool customs, I would love to see some pictures!
reapersaurus wrote:
Sphere - I'm with you about the compulsory round-robin popularity contest.

I have seen too many examples of efforts that appeared at first to be a simple rah-rah celebration of members, turn into ugly personal-vendetta-filled group tear-downs.

Let's just keep the group on the down-low (no microbadge - heck, many of us already have the Heroscape fan mb) and if you want to do anything, have volunteers post stories about what they like best about the game, or tell stories about their memorable experiences with the game (like Hendel's brief Gencon post, just in more detail).

Heck, if you want you can make a Guild for the League, but I don't know what exact function those perform other than making it easy to cycle thru the member's collections.

Hi Reaper!
I must admit that I had not foreseen any problems and bad feelings toward my suggestion, but since they are there, let me address them properly!

First, this was only a suggestion, an idea, not something I decided, and now we´re in the process of hearing other perspectives on it...

I can see why styling the idea after "Geek of the Week" might not appeal to some. I have no intention of singling out anybody as being more or less important than anyone else, and definitely no intention to turn this into a popularity contest!
Instead of a "celebration" I thought this might be a great excuse for people, to step up and say something about why they play the game, more like a "Show and tell", musings, essays or whatever, something... different! An informal, friendly way of, as you put it: "have volunteers post stories about what they like best about the game, or tell stories about their memorable experiences with the game." Think of it as a good excuse for some, to check in, and chime in, on Heroscape more often!

Maybe it´s just me, but I can´t imagine things turning ugly!

The whole idea was just to do something funny, and if someone does make a microbadge, people should feel free to take it or leave it as they please!

The League thing has been bubbling in my head for a few weeks, and at first, I thought of starting a guild. I dropped the idea, thinking it would just be a distraction, diverting good posts, that should rightly be here in the forums, and end up as just another guild, that people would slowly stop visiting. So I opted instead for posting on the prime HS page, where people DO come by...

Maybe the "´Scaper show&tell" is not nescessary, maybe it´s not a great idea, maybe it´s even a bad one, what do the rest of you think?

And let me end this post with these words:
I am certainly not interested in pestering or alienating anybody who joined up for the fun and sillyness that was the underlying tone and promise of the thread from the very beginning!

Jesper

Groups tend to organize activities, which is fun for many, and no harm in that. If you and I would rather contribute as the muse inspires us, I'm sure that will be fine as well.

I think we should focus on what we have in common: the fascinating game system which we all enjoy.
