Ok, thanks for the answers on that! I read a message and someone had said there was a reissue with round bases, but if there are no minis turning up, then you are right, probably just rumors!

I personally don't like the square bases, it seems to take away from the game and the mini stands out as being different.

D.

The are a few miniatures of the Alliance&Empire Set available with round bases as part of the Battle of Hoth Scenario Pack.
There have been rumors of a reprint of this set with round bases, but so far these continue to be just that, rumors.
The Alliance and Empire Set is the only one that has the square bases. This set was released as part of the 30th anniversary celebration for Star Wars. All of the other sets have the standard circle base.

Generally, the square base was not well received in the SWM community. . .you can read more on this topic over on the SWM Forum on WoTC's site. . .

Thread: Alliance & Empire Set Questions

I'm pretty new to SW Minis, my boys got into them and now I am too. I've been buying a lot of commons on ebay and in trade groups and whatnot, and I have a quick question.

On the Alliance & Empire set, are there two different base styles? The square commemorative ones that say "Star Wars" on the front AND regular circle ones, or is there only the square ones?

Thanks,
D.

Huges are almost all overcosted anyway, so they need as much help as they can get. The recent ruling on setup for huges also makes a few of them a bit more playable as well.

Thread: Gaming with my 5 Year Old... Part 2: The Fall of Kenobi

(First an apology, I somehow managed to post this as a review when I had intended to make it a session report. Someone sent me an email to let me know it was wrong and to resubmit this as a Session Report which I am doing now - so sorry from the new guy! thanks!)

Well, after our first game of Star Wars Minis last week my son really has been really eager to get back in and play it again. We have been mostly playing the basic HeroScape and he has done quite well, but I think he likes the SW game better because he is such a huge fan and always watches the movies and cartoons and has no trouble pointing out characters by name, making the game flow much faster since he already knows who is who in the Star Wars Universe. Also, since he knows the game is for the "older kids", being able to play it (even the very basic streamlined version that we play) makes him very happy with himself.

My older son likes the D&D Minis, so it looks like I'm going to be getting hooked on buying into the whole collectible game thing again (something I had no plans of doing after MageKnight, HeroClix and MechWarrior), at least I like these minis better (the D&D and SW minis), and I like the cards with fixed numbers better than those clix dials anyhow.

I wanted to add some rules into the game this time around and slowly make it more complex so he can learn one or two new things at a time and handle it without any frustration. This time around we added in Vader and Kenobi. My son has been having a great time playing the Empire, so he continued and took Vader to lead his troops. I explained his special ability to double attack in hand to hand if not moving and he understood this quite well.

We setup our cards, and used poker chips for the hit points (each chip was worth 10 points, so Vader had 14 chips, Kenobi had 10, etc.), this method of stacking the cards with the chips seems to work better than trying to use those little cardboard point tokens when they take damage, or trying to keep track of it on paper, it just makes the game flow faster and is a bit easier - especially for him being only five.

If you read my last session report, I controlled some Rebel Fleet Troopers as they tries to gain access to one of Vader's bases, they were killed, and as a result we decided that this time the Empire should have an advantage because they knew Kenobi's forces were on their way.

My group of characters consisted of the Rebel Trooper Captain (I will keep calling him Captain Antilles, but he was not named that on the card), and a small band of Rebel Fleet Troopers. They were all lead by Ben Kenobi. My son had a squad of Stormtroopers with one Heavy Stormtrooper in there (doing more damage per hit) and they were lead by Vader himself. The point totals were completely equal except I did not let Kenobi use any special force powers, only Vader with his double attack.

The special bonus he got for winning the last scenario, was to setup his guys wherever he wanted, and when we entered the base he would have the first attack. It actually worked out quite well for him, he did a great job putting his guys around corners and setting them up nicely. Perfectly positioned to defend against Kenobi's soon to come assault. I wanted to take out his heavy Stormtrooper as soon as possible but it wasn't possible for me to get any shots at him in the beginning.

As the game began, my Rebel Fleet Troopers met a lot of resistance entering the base and I lost two of them right off the bat, but I was determined and my wave of troops pressed forward into the main base, taking out Stormtroopers left and right. The feel of play really felt like the movies, troopers vs troopers as shots blasted back and forth down the hall, the only thing missing were R2 and 3PO trying to cross the hall between them.

After a few turns had gone by, we were down to a few troopers on both sides, that ended up in a shoot out in a hallway on the right side of the throne room. While this battle raged on, Vader and Ben finally met in the hallway on the left side of the throne room. Kenobi and Vader had an epic (and long) lightsaber battle while the battle on the opposite side ended with Captain Antilles being the sole survivor.

As the lightsaber battle continued, Vader was doing quite well and Kenobi was quickly running low on health, so Captain Antilles ran to his aid. Antilles arrived too late though, he managed to get a couple of shots off, only one of which actually managed to hit and damge Vader, but it was at that moment that Vader's saber cut down poor old Ben.

As Vader turned and moved towards Antilles, I did what any Rebel Captain would do when facing the Dark Lord, I turned and ran! I managed to get out of the base before Vader was able to reach me, and I told my Son he was going to call for help and get Luke and Han to join him in another attack.

It was a great game and lasted about 45 minutes or so. My son has been improving in his math skills quite a bit with this game. In HeroScape we never needed to figure any double digit numbers, and in this game it seems as though all of the numbers are double digits, making it more difficult for him to figure out some of the dice rolls and once in awhile he needs some help, but overall it isn't bad and he is learning the rules quite well.

Thanks to everyone who helped me with suggestions from my last posting, I think that I'll be enjoying Star Wars Mini games with my 5 year old for some time to come now, and have as much fun with him and this game as I do playing with adults my own age.

D.

My 5-year and I also play SWM. It is easier to play than other games like Heroclix, due to the fixed stats. We actually play using all of the rules now - later intorductions included combined fire and Attacks of Opportunity. He cannot read the actual abilities on the cards but can pick out the Defense, Attack, etc. I just review the cards with him before each game, telling him what eeach character can do . . .

He was really excited about it and really happy to be there and see it happen, he wants to play it badly! ha.

I am playing again tonight with him, this time I am going to add Ben Kenobi to my team and Darth Vader to his team and see what I can figure out to make those special abilities easier. Someone had suggested giving them each one ability like allowing Vader to strike twice if he doesn't move, etc. So We'll see how that goes tonight and how well he does with some more rules.

Thanks,
D.

I'm not entirely sure where to find other players, though Does anyone know of a group in new York City, or where there are resources to find one?

Hey everyone, thanks for your tips and suggestions, I have found some great new things in here that I will be working into the games - thanks!

As for me calling Warhammer "heavy", I may have mis-worded what I was trying to get across to you. There is absolutely no way I can even think of introducing him to Warhammer right now, he is just too young to grasp too much of it. So in the terms of me starting him off with the basic HeroScape and the Star Wars game streamlined to the bare essentials, Warhammer is a "Heavy" game by those standards.

Thanks,
D.

Hi D. I enjoyed reading about how you modified / simplified the rules and provided a nice backstory in order to grab your son's attention. You might take a look at Neil Thomson's HeroQuest session reports. He's written up several games that he's played with his three sons. If nothing else they might provide some ideas on how to pace certain competitive elements. They are also just good reads!
In the Hoth-Starter there is an easy-to-play Vader. He is giving all stormies in 6 range +4 to defense, this should be easy to understand. And you can also introduce the force points: spending 1 force to reroll a bad die roll or gain 2 addtional movement points.

Some other Jedi powers are also quite easy to understand, like lightsaber block / deflect.
Darth Vader would still be powerful without his special abilities. In fact he would be able to hold his own against several grunt level rebel soldiers, his stats are very impressive. Actually for the most part, the Point Cost for minis usually fits their stats even if you don't use the special abilities.
However, you could also consider adding 1 or 2 special abilities or force abilities without making it too difficult for your son and yet it would still give him that feel of using a character that can wield the force.
For example, some characters have Double Attack, which allows them to attack twice if them don't move. This should be an easy concept for a child to pick up. Lightsabler sweep allows a character spend force points to attack every character that is adjacent to him in a single turn. Lightsaber Deflect allows a mini to block an attack from a shooter. Also all minis with a force number can use a force point on their turn to reroll a missed attack.
Of course you probably wouldn't want to us all of these abilities at once, but maybe have on character on each team that uses one of these abilities.
There is also an added bonus of incorporating force abilities. Since some minis get only a limited number of force points for the whole game, it teaches your son to save those points until he really needs them.

Very cool report of playing strategy games with your boy. I like hearing about these, it gives me hope for my growing game partners, er, I mean sons.

Cardboard Carnage wrote:
Can anyone give me any suggestions or tips and let me know what I can do? How well would Vader do without any special abilities? He has a butt-load of hit points, so he'd last awhile, but how uneven will battles be if I omit those abilities and still use the point values on the card?

I've never actually played SW minis, but I'm assuming that Vader is uber-powerful just like an Ogre. So you could teach your son a new version of Star Wars minis called VaderOGRE. Basically have one of you be Vader and the other guy gets a ton of lesser figures and Vader has to all the way across the map to a specific location. It's up to the rebels to whittle him down step by lightsaber-hacking step. If Vader makes it alive, Vader wins. If not, well, the other guy does.

Edit: PS
Oh yes, being a teacher, I also like to see kids play games to increase their math and reading abilities. I love to have people come into my room and tell me games aren't good for kids... Nod and smile, nod and smile.

Thread: Gaming with my 5 Year Old...

My 5 year old son has literally grown up around gaming. I have held game nights every other weekend for years and play everything from board games to light mini games, to <strike>heavier</strike> games like Warhammer. (Note: That didn't sound right and caused some confusion, I was trying to illustrate how the games my gaming group played were heavy for my 5 year old, meaning that games like Warhammer were out of the question to try and simplify for him because there is just too much going on, whereas a game like HeroScape of Star Wars Minis has more potential because they come with fixed weapon stats, little cards to help you understand the pieces, less dice rolling and math, etc.)

He has always shown an interest in gaming, he plays with his toys and rolls dice as he moves them and things of that nature.

Now that he is able to count and do simple addition and subtraction, I thought it might be good to bring him into some real gaming (we have done things like Kids of Catan and Candyland and whatnot), but recently I introduced him to HeroScape using the basic rules and simplified a bit... he loved it and caught on rather quickly!

Earlier this morning he asked if we could play with the Star Wars Miniatures. I am not a big player of the game myself, but my oldest son (age 14) is, and we have quite a collection. I know the game is for 12 and up (I think), so I tried to talk him out of it, but he really wanted to give it a shot. "Please Daddy, Please! I love Star Wars, I can do it!"

So I finally agreed and set up a map (one with inside walls, rooms, turbolifts, etc. and asked if he wanted to be the good guys or the bad guys. Of course he started pulling out Darth Vader and armies of Stormtroopers. So I had him calm down a bit and suggested that we take it slow for our first game, he agreed.

I setup a small 3 man unit of Stormtroopers. One was an Elite and had a larger gun (I'm sorry if I am not being extremely accurate here, my oldest son could tell you anything you wanted to know about this game, but I am pretty new). Anyhow, I gave myself three Rebel Fleet Troopers, one of them was a Captain. Our groups were evenly matched.

I said "Ok, let's set them up and then I'll explain the basic rules to you" and his reply was "Yeah, but what is the scenario!" I laughed that he used the word correctly, but sure enough, he wanted to know the back story before we would begin the game.

"Ok" I replied as I took out a mini of Vader and a mini of Ben and placed them out on the table, "We are not going to use these minis right now, but let's pretend that Ben is on a mission to Capture Vader, and he is starting off by sending in these Rebel Fleet Troopers to determine the location of Vader."

My son seemed quite eager to hear more. It seems as though his imagination is such that he really got a better experience out of our game by me setting it up nicely for him, so I continued, "If I can take out your three Stormtroopers, then in our next game, when Ben meets Vader, he will get some kind of a bonus for being able to take out the Stormtroopers... and if your Stormtroopers win, then in our next game Vader would know Ben was on his way and you'll be able to have a trap set for me!"

My son was really excited about the game now, "Let's play!" he shouted.

So the rules I used were EXTREMELY streamlined. I figure that I will do like I did with HeroScape and slowly introduce a rule for each new game we play, making it more complex up to as much as I think he can handle at one time.

I noticed the hit points and the damage each mini could do were all in 10's, so I used poker chips for the health. For instance, on the Elite Stormtrooper, I think he had 30 health, so he had 3 poker chips. I figured this game would be easy to keep track of the damage, but when using Vader or Ben or anything character like that, I noticed some high numbers, like 140 health... so I figured in future games the poker chips would be a valuable tool to help the game run smoothly and keep track of hit points and damage on some of the more powerful guys. He understood the concept quite quickly.

For movement I explained that each guy could move 6 squares and then shoot, or he could move 12 squares and not shoot. He understood that right away as well.

For the shooting and damage I just rolled the D20, added the attack number, and if it beat the defense of the person he was attacking then it was a hit, subtract the damage as indicated.

That was the entire set of rules I used for the first game and it worked wonderfully! Because of the dice being a D20, he had to do some more complex math than he was used to, and there was quite a bit of counting on his fingers, but it all worked out well in the end and I feel as though games of this nature will be a big benefit to him when he goes back to school after the summer.

As for the game itself, my first move was to enter the complex and take positions near some walls, I split up my guys into 2 groups. For his first move, he ran out into the hall to confront me at both spots, which was a huge mistake because I was able to get the first attack.

He realized after his turn was over that he should have waited for me to enter the room his Stormtroopers were in so he would be able to shoot at me first. Again, I feel as though this is really helping to teach him things such as match and strategy and problem solving too.

As my turn started, I did as promised between turns, and I opened fire on him. One of his troopers was down on the first turn. He returned fire and took out two of my guys.

It was now one of my guys against 2 of his. And we were both separate now. I moved my trooper down a hallway to try and get to a good spot to fight him, and he actually managed to come in at me from two sides, and in another turn he had taken me out and won his first game.

It was a super experience, and I hope to play more with him soon and slowly work him into more rules.

I am not sure how to approach some of the bigger characters though, we are not using any of the special abilities as listed on the big white area of the card, mainly because I think it is way to complex to start off with. I know he is eager to have a lightsaber battle and use some of his favorite guys, but I don't want to ruin the game by making it over complex for him.

Can anyone give me any suggestions or tips and let me know what I can do? How well would Vader do without any special abilities? He has a butt-load of hit points, so he'd last awhile, but how uneven will battles be if I omit those abilities and still use the point values on the card?

Thanks all!
D.

Edit: Blue Text at Top

I found a taker. It's now been claimed.

Hey everybody,
I somehow ended up with a Star Wars minis Attack on Endor scenario book. I don't own any Star Wars minis, so I was wondering if anyone wants it. It's free. No minis, maps or anything else are included. Just the booklet. It's in quite nice condition, although it does have a faint smoky smell. Send me a PM with your address and I'll pop it in the mail. First one to claim it gets it.

The game started with my wife being the rebels and me being the imperials. It was a 150 point game and the light sabers were hot and ready to carve some human or alien flesh.

I decided to keep Darth Vader, Sith Lord behind my storm troopers to provide cover for him and also keep him from getting any damage in the start of the game with my wife doing the same with Luke Skywalker and her rebels.

The shooting went badly for both sides with only a few deaths on both sides as the groups gathered closer together.

Darth Vader was making a meal of the rebel troopers while Luke wasn't doing so well with the stormtroopers who were being very annoying.

With no rebel troopers left my wife decided to take a gamble and put him against Darth Vader.

What a mistake, even though I probably would have done the same thing.

Luke was chopped apart like a slaughtered animal. The decaying body of Luke Skywalker can be found on the planet Tatooine for any one that is interested and you need not watch the Star Wars movies any more because this is what really happened!

That is pretty bad... though the version I have doesn't have the crazy eye paint job and is decent for a prepainted mini. Maybe I've been collecting for so long that anything better than what we got 5 years ago is good to me.

I'd much have them be honest and post production painted samples than "studio" painted work that is nowhere near the final manufactured product.
Thread: The EU strikes back! My thoughts on the Legacy fo the Force set

Below are my thoughts on the figures and their contributions (if any) to the game. As far as I can tell, this set only has 2 characters from the movie canon (not counting those that are Expanded Universe "future" versions of movie characters).

Wizards truly listened to fans (or finally figured it out themselves) and designed some excellent Vong and Mandalorian pieces to bring those factions to the same level as the others. However, Sith and Old Republic are still quite lacking; even though they have good figures, you’ll be better off pairing them with Fringers than troops from their own faction.

Old Republic

1 Nomi Surinder VR

It seems WoTC forgot we already have battle meditating Old Republic Jedi in Bastila…and one that was great at that role already. If Nomi cost about 7-10 points less she would be quite useful, but as it stands her Meddle commander effect doesn’t justify her low stats.

2 Old Republic Recruit C

This trooper is basically the Rebel trooper from a long, long time ago… doesn’t offer very much just like the Rebel successor when compared to the similarly costed Stormtrooper, but is a cheap way to fill up Old Republic squads. Don’t expect too much return for your investment – you may be better off with Gran Raiders and Uggies.

3 Old Republic Scout C

This scout definitely needs a commander to grant super-stealth to keep him alive long enough to use his Flanking. Still, he doesn’t add much to his faction, which is still sorely in need of good troopers and Jedi.

Sith

4 Darth Caedus VR

Evil Jacen’s stats aren’t too impressive, but his activation power and super darts are fantastic. He may be better at ranged attack than melee! Illusion grants him defensive abilities that Sith are sorely lacking, and is quite versatile. He’s a follower so can benefit well from Revan (to add even more initiative circumventing!), but that puts a bit too many points into 2 figures.

5 Darth Krayt VR

Krayt effectively has double his hit points with his armor, but he’s still not a powerhouse like Darth Bane. Lightning is superb as always; triple attack is also nothing to be ashamed of, and he’s durable and mobile enough to take advantage of the triple. If only there were better Sith followers for his commander effect… he’s solid, but not comptetitive. It’s strange because on paper he looks awesome, but the synergy isn’t there when he’s actual fighting it out on the tabletop.

6 Darth Nihl VR

There’s nothing redeemable about this Sith Lord (or rather Sith Puppy). Don’t be seduced by his Reach 2 – his stats are lowly and his worthless commander effect prevents him from benefiting from other better effects.

7 Darth Talon VR

I’ve always though Jedi should be better at Deflect than only a 50% chance (on top of already costing a Force point) – the Bubble is the answer. Talon will be very tough to take down, and she has the offensive capabilities to justify her cost. Hold her back

8 Lumiya, the Dark Lady R
Melee Reach 3! The Dark Lady will be a great surprise to your opponent if they’re not careful – though you must plan well also when using her. She has a few contradictory powers that serve only to drive up her cost (main self destruct and reach), probably due to fluff reasons, but overall she is quite capable. Hopefully we’ll also see a Fringer who grants abilities to Pilots for her and Krayt.

Republic

9 Republic Commando Training Sergeant U
Sev isn’t the only Delta Squad member who’s useful anymore! The commandoes just went up a notch, though you must be careful as this NCO doesn’t have shields himself and is quite fragile.

Separatist

10 Darth Tyranus, Legacy of the Dark Side R

Master of the Force 2 helps him quite a lot. Naturally, Darth Sidious is the perfect power battery for him, and he can dish out a ton of hurt and activations together at his side. He is fantastic at the 150pt to 200pt level as he needs a team to protect him being he is without range defense.

Rebel

11 Bothan Noble U
Rebels have been on a streak since Alliance and Empire in receiving fantastic support figures, and this Bothan is no exception. Odd-HP are always good for that extra bit of survivability, and he fills multiple roles. Best to pair him with Elites or Heavy Weapon grunts that have HP to heal.

12 Deena Shan R

ANOTHER cheap disruptive for the Rebels! Personally I like her stats a bit more than Force Unleashed’s Juno, but the sculpt is a disgrace to the Deena in the comics and that’s enough for me to not use her (well, almost)!

13 Elite Rebel Commando U

This is getting out of hand… he has so many abilities he could be worth twice his cost. Naturally pair him with the Strike Leader for super stealth and watch your opponents groan. Expect to see him on every Rebel and New Republic squad now.

14 General Dodonna R

New Republic as well Rebels have probably the most useful meta-piece in the set. His tempo control is more powerful than any seen before (he may choose one or two activations), and his stats are the same as those grunts in the same class with no special powers at all! You can fit him on any size squad and he’ll be worth it.

15 Luke Skywalker, Legacy of the Light Side R

This is an interesting Luke with one of the new game powers (Greater Mobile) and Stealth to match his comic theme. He’s built for multirole (stealth sniper as well as close combat), which drives up his cost and isn’t always the best for this game where specialists still rule. He's quite mediocre for his cost, and there are so many better figures for the Rebels now.

Still, I love the sculpt design (why couldn't Deena be as creatively made?), so here's a good strategy I've devised for him: Pair Luke with Yoda as his Force battery and a Bith Vigo for Evade, and run Luke up early in the game to get a good position in cover. Don't worry about leaving him out in the open as he's got Evade and Yoda to help avoid hits, and leave him there as a stealthed sniper. If he does get based, he can hold his own for a while in melee as well.

16 Rebel Honor Guard C

The only reason I would imagine someone wanting to use them is for replaying the awards ceremony scene… so far we have the Luke and Han for that scene, though we’re still missing the Princess in that dress… but I digress…

17 Twi'lek Scout C

Not a bad choice if you have heavy weapon teams (at least two) which he can contribute to.

Empire

18 Antares Draco R

Typical of Dark Side Force Users, Antares is quite lacking in defense against ranged attack and that is his greatest weakness that lowers his justification for his cost. He’s not terribly strong in melee either; it seems the Corossis is a bit overcosted for the very slight chance of being pulled off. Unless you plan on running other Knights in your squad, don’t bother with Antares. Having Jagged Fel also helps significantly and is almost a given with his cheap cost.

19 Emperor Roan Fel VR

This Emperor’s stats are a bit low, but he makes up for it in abilities and powers. Quite susceptible to shooters, so you’ll need bodyguards as his commander effect implies (Coruscant Guards from COTF are excellent candidates in addition to the Knights). Cortosis only has a 20% chance of activating -- on top a Block success -- so is highly luck-dependent. Extremely powerful offensely, but requires skillful use to keep him alive.

20 Imperial Knight U
21 Imperial Knight U

These knights are a great value, and given their Synergy you’ll want to pack at least two to make it worthwhile. They work well as companions in a Vader death squad or high shooting Imperial team – just hold them back for a bit while your ranged attackers softens up the opposing forces.

22 Imperial Pilot C

An good counterpart to any huge or droid that he has abilities for, though you’re more likely to use him with Fringe vehicles than Imperials as AT-STs are just too expensive to fit in a standard game, even with Blizzard Scout. It’s almost a waste that he has the Pilot keyword since you’ll likely not be attacking with him, but he benefits well from Jagged.

23 Imperial Security Officer U

They should not be allowed to keep stealing Ackbar’s ability! This officer can dish out a good amount of damage and his stolen ability helps him pull it off. Make sure you keep him in cover and not in the front as he doesn’t have stealth.

24 Jagged Fel R

A fantastic value just in stats alone – he could easily cost 50% more and still be usable. His commander effect and affinity make him a top pick. Even if you only have a few Pilots in the team he’s worth the cost.

25 Marasiah Fel R

A low cost dark Jedi, but one that does not have enough commander boosts from the faction to help her maximize her attack and potential.

26 Moff Morlish Veed VR

Similar to Dodonna, but at a higher cost with better stats, though his requirement for LOS puts him at a distinct disadvantage most of the game, especially in the early stages. Nonetheless, he’s well worth using for tempo control.

27 Moff Nyxia Calixte R

Super stealth and Recon? She’s amazing and a necessity for any squad with stealth, and even if you don’t have stealth, Nyxia’s a boon for the team.

28 Noghri Commando U
A bit costly, but if given super stealth this Commando can easily make his points back.

29 Shadow Stormtrooper U
Similar to the Noghri, he needs a bit of support to maximize his potential. Great synergies for this Shadow trooper – Nyxia of course for super stealth; Veers for Accurate shot, and any other boost for damage is highly recommended. Even without the commanders he’s good value for his cost.

New Republic

30 Corellian Security Officer U
With the proliferation of super stealth in popular factions like the Empire, Ackbar’s power to shut it down is invaluable. Overall, a very good figure that is survivable, provides good support, and also damages well.

31 Galactic Alliance Scout C
Override will always be more useful that Door Gimmick, so Lobot is still a better choice for a lower cost. This scout has more abilities, but with only 10HP he won’t survive long even with Stealth with his low defense.

32 Galactic Alliance Trooper C
Not worth it at this time: still very few competitive pieces that require damage reduction in the meta game.

33 Han Solo galactic Hero R
Soundrel Han may have met his match! This one has it all, and is a match for even Boba.

34 Kyle Katarn Jedi Battlemaster VR

Kyle straddles both Light and Dark side powers to perfectly reflect his role in the video games. Also, his awesome Grenade skill works quite well for him. If he only had Deflect or higher defense against shooting he would be perfect.

35 Leia Organa Solo, Jedi Knight VR

Leia again is built with a strong commander effect. She is a nice complement to New Republic squads with her boost, but is way too fragile for her cost so keep her out of harm’s way until the endgame. Or just don’t bring her at all; at this point New Republic has enough good choices already.

36 Luke Skywalker Force Spirit VR

With Speed 4, this friendly ghost can actually keep up with your Jedi (unlike Obi’s spirit). Functionally he’s the same and is a boon to your Force users, especially both iterations of Mara Jedi boosted with Bith Vigo’s stealth evade.

37 Mara Jade Skywalker VR

Luckily she isn’t as good as her A&E predecessor, as her sculpt is just terrible. She’s actually not a bad figure that’s a little more durable with Mettle and Deflect, but now that New Republic has more options you can use the slightly cheaper Mara Jedi and fill the ranks with others.

38 Shado Vao R

Great Mobile is an excellent ability (did I mention I love the addition D&D feats?), and while Shado seems to have low hit points, his powers and abilities keep him in the fight for a while. He’ll also need a Force battery to maximize his Master of the Force.

39 Wolf Sazen VR

The Wolf is not bad… but a tad too weak for his cost. Surprise move helps his survivability, but with his limited Force reserve don’t count on it keeping him alive too long.

Fringe

40 Cade Skywalker, Bounty Hunter VR
Cade is perfect in almost every way except for his splash damage, which works poorly with melee companions. That said, well constructed ranged attacking squad still dominates the game, and he is fantastic for any of such teams.

41 Deliah Blue R

High mobility, damage, and Accurate shot. Very good package, though not perfect for every team due to cost and somewhat low stats.

42 Dug Fringer U
43 Duros Scoundrel C
45 Guard Droid C
47 Human Scoundrel C
48 Human Scout C
51 Rodian Blaster for Hire U
52 Trandoshan Mercenary C

These Fringers just don’t cut it. It’s good to see Wizards putting some thought into designing abilities for the scrubs that are quite mediocre -- but better than the substandard common/uncommon dregs we used to get -- we would have been better off with cheap fillers that had higher stats and no abilities.

44 Gotal Mercenary C
Evade and Intuition for only 13 points! This is wonderful package, though Intuition takes a bit of experience to master.

46 Human Bodyguard C
The Wookie bodyguard has finally met his match. For 2 points more, you have someone who can do ranged attack or at the least provide combined fire. Don’t leave home without him!

49 Jariah Syn R
Another low cost high damage potential -– though it’s a bit situational so may be hard to pull off in every game. Still, for the relatively low points Jariah fits well on most teams.

50 Kel Dor Bounty Hunter C

Here’s a fun piece to employ. He has Stealth and enough hit points to get to the enemy, and is dangerous enough that your opponent has to focus more attention than he’s worth on taking him out quick. If he does base the enemy, try to hit him with splash damage to engage his self destruct.

Mandalorian

53 Boba Fett, Mercenary Commander VR

The solution for making Mandalorians a solid faction! He holds up well on his own, and also allows Mando shooters to be worth their cost. Canderous is also a perfect candidate for his leadership.

54 Canderous Ordo R

Amazing… Triple Attack (30 Damage) + Regen! Add in Boba’s Accurate Shot commander effect and now we know what Mandalorians can truly output. However, be wary of his low attack rating, so use him to take down 30 HP or less troopers instead of target high value assets with high defense.

55 Mandalorian Gunslinger U
She’s a great addition to the Mandalorians, but just be careful when using her as her base damage is only 10 and so you need to pull off the Cunning Attack early on.

56 Mandalorian Trooper U
Combine him with Boba, a Bith Vigo, and Mando Commander, this trooper will be a major headache for your opponent.

Yuuzhan Vong

57 Yuuzhan Vong Elite Warrior U

Now we finally see some good mid-level troops to fight along with your Vong. The Vong Jedi Hunter is better, but if you don’t have the points for him this is a good alternate.

58 Yuuzhan Vong Jedi Hunter U

Even if you are not facing Jedi and can’t use those two abilities, he is still incredibly hard to take down for his cost. A must on any Vong team.

59 Yuuzhan Vong Shaper U

The Shaper’s ability is sorely needed, but without Stealth and other defensive abilties, he’s very vulnerable and not that cheap either. If his effect had had unlimited range then it would be a different matter. You’re better off with a team composed of the Nom, Yomin, and Subaltern (plus the Warmaster for 200pt games).

60 Yuuzhan Vong Warrior C

This warrior has the stats/abilities of the previous version… skip him. Two Gran Raiders taking advantage of Nom’s leadership can do much more.

Thread: Re: Storing Huge Minis

While I don't have tons and tons of them, I store mine in the same setup (the black, rolling storage units), too. For the huge minis I have, I work them in there, except for the Viper droid. If I had the one with the big drawers, it'd fit easily. The little drawers are also the right size for the boxes and such.

heck, i'd settle for a good way to store the smaller mini's. the closest thing to a solution i've found is just a 3700-series Plano box, but that option works far better for Commands&Colors blocks than mini's.
Thread: Re: The Good, The Bad, The Star Wars!

Stat cards are also disappointing, printed on poor quality cardboard with goofy looking pictures of the character they represent on their "back" side.
hee hee... That's SO true! When I popped open the box I bought today (my first!), I was shocked at how bad the artwork was on the cards. I couldn't help but think that someone at LucasFilm might not be too happy with the quality of the artwork here.

Also, the paint job on some of the minis is bad. Luckily, I fancy myself an average mini painter, so I can fix these guys up without too much effort.

Nice review! It was one of the reasons I finally picked up this game!

G

Thread: Mass Battles - another option

I didn't want to hijack the Mass Battles thread already existing. For another option, you may consider No Limits(www.wargamesunlimited.com) to serve this purpose as well. It's a free system for SF battles using 25-30 mm figures and is built from the ground up to handle this scale of combat. There is currently a project going to build Star Wars conversions in all of the major eras.

The system is free, so you're not risking anything by taking a look. In addition to the Star Wars armies, there are army lists available for several other existing minis ranges, allowing any number of interesting battles.

Nice plot mechanism to get him on the ground to gut the AT-AT with his lightsaber.

I don't recall if Wedge was on Hoth or not... must re-watch..

Thread: Star Wars Miniatures Mass Battles Conversion

To preface, these rules are not meant to be a wargame/simulator, but a way to play large battles using the established Wizards Star Wars Miniatures system. Thus, many of the rules will not be "realistic" to true military doctrine or battlefield conditions, and as such, decisions have been made in order to allow the game to flow quicker rather and be more abstract.

These rules have not been professionally tested nor balanced for competitive play, so most likely there are loopholes that one can exploit. That leads to the most important rule: Play with good sportsmanship and common sense, avoid nitpicking stuff and just have fun.

1. Rules Overview

Unless otherwise stated, you will be playing with the exact rules/errata from SWM. The specifics of the rule changes are detailed below:

* Play will occur on a gridless battlefield, and scale translates to 1 grid square to 1 inch. There will be no additional penalties for "diagonal" movement/ranges due to this freeform nature.

* Adjacency equates to any unit within 1 inch.

* The majority of your units will be formed into squads, and you will activate the entire squad as one of the two activations per phase (Section 2).

* Commander effect range have been redefined (Section 3).

* Range attacks now have additional modifiers such as range and new targeting rules (Section 4).

2. Unit composition

Non-unique figures in the following classes must be organized into squads as specified below:

Irregular units (1pt - 4pt) have a squad size of 10-20.

Regular troops (5pt - 10pt) have squad size of 8-10.

Elite units (11pt – 15pt) have a squad size of 5-10.

Special Forces (16pt+) have squad sizes of 2-8.

Each squad may also add:
1 special/heavy weapon per 5 troops.
1 medic per 10 troops.

An officer/NCO (unit with with a commander effect or an elite) or unique may be one of the troops. Any number of additional uniques may be part of the unit, but only one of the uniques may have a commander effect (so a unit can have at most 2 commanders).

Each member within a squad must remain within 1” of another member.

Activation

When activating a squad, all figures must activate at the same time. You still roll individually for each figure. The entire squad counts as one activation.

Terrain Effects

Conditions such as cover bonus, difficult terrain, etc. apply to the entire squad if over 50% of the units are subject to this condition; otherwise, the entire squad does not experience it.

Exception: Abilities which completely hide a unit from line-of-sight only occur to individual figures and not the entire squad, even if more than 50% of them are subject

For example, Stealth: in a squad where only some figures are in cover, only those exactly in the cover terrain gain this ability; the other figures still gain the terrain cover bonus but not stealth.

Independent Characters

Uniques, savage, non-combatants, and large/huge base figures may act as indepedent characters and do not need to join a squad, or may form a squad of any size with each other.

Independent characters may choose to join/leave squads at anytime during their movement as long as the player announces it.

3. Commander Effects

Commander effects of figures in squads only affect the unit the leader is attached.

Independent characters' commander effects affect other indepdenents within 6" (even if the range specified on the card is greater). They also affect entire squads where 50%+ of figures in the squad are within 6" of this character.

Exceptions and other rules:

Mas Amedda's Booming Voice still grants unlimited range, but one to 1 commander, and Mas must remain within 1" of him.

Effects that only target 1 figure (i.e. Revan’s) still have whatever range, be it unlimited, is specified on the card.

4. Ranged Attacks

All figures in a unit must target the same enemy unit when shooting.

Only the first 2 "ranks" of troops in a squad that face that target may shoot and combine fire at it. The second rank of a unit does not suffer cover penalties/bonuses by the front rank.

Individual figures within a squad may not be targeted except by Accurate Shot or Sniper equivalents (even if they are in the front rank), and it also adds a -8 modifier to attack.

Any unit/squad size of 3 or less may not be targeted unless unit is the closest enemy or by another unit of same/smaller size, except by Accurate Shot or Sniper equivalent. Large base figures count as 2 units and huge as 4 for unit size purporses.

Units and squads adjacent to the enemy may not shoot at another enemy.

Vehicles may always be targeted if a reasonable part of their structure is in LOS, but still get cover bonuses.

Modifiers

Units with blaster rifles/pistols, and other small arms:

Short Range (up to 6”): no penalty.
Medium Range (6”-12”): -4 attack.
Long Range (12”-24”): -8 attack.
Extreme Range (24”+): automatically miss.

Vehicles and units with heavy weapons, missiles, etc:

Short Range (up to 12”): no penalty.
Medium Range (12”-24”): -4 attack.
Long Range (24”-36”): -8 attack.
Extreme Range (36”+): automatically miss.

Units that have moved and fired: -2 attack (does not apply to vehicles and units possessing Mobile Attack or Charging Fire/Assault).

Targeting a unit with a squad (if applicable): -8 attack.

Targeting an independent character: -4 attack (does not apply to Snipers and Accurate Shooters).

Combined Fire

Combined fire bonuses are at +2 per figure giving up its turn to combine.

Figures in the same squad may only combine fire with each other. The bonuses gained can be distributed in any way the player sees fit.

An entire squad may choose to combine fire with another squad (or independent character) during that other unit’s activation. The bonuses gained can be distributed in any way the player sees fit.

Casualties

Only the first 2 ranks of a squad – dependent on the direction of the fire -- may be hit (non-area effect damage). The squad owner takes casualties from these ranks as they see fit.

Area Effect Damage

When a unit is subject to area effect damage, count from wherever the maximum amount of figures may be hit, then roll the save (if appropriate) for each figure.

“Look out Sir!” – if an officer or unique or unique in a squad is within range of the splash damage and there is at least one other figure in the squad not affected by this, that figure may switch positions with the officer or unique before the save is rolled.

4. Melee Attack

A figure adjacent to another figure is able to make a melee attack.

When a figure kills another figure in melee attack, they may move up to half their normal movement after the attack (i.e. 3” for most figures).

Within a squad, this movement is taken after all the attacks made the squad are completed; the squad must move as a whole and maintain 1” coherency. What this means is that sometimes figures in a squad not engaged in melee can gain a free move also.

5. Misc rules

All huges and vehicles (excluding bikes) gain Damage Reduction 10. If the unit already possesses that ability, it is upgrade to DR 20.

Deflect 11 is now a free ability (no Force cost) available to all Force users with Lightsabers. For figures that already have this ability, it is upgraded to Deflect 6.

Lightsaber Reflect is now reduced in cost to 1 Force point, and the Force user needs to roll a 6 save to activate, while the recipient of the damage has save 16.

The bonus move costing 1 Force point is now upgraded to 6”, and all Master Speed powers are increased by another 6”.

6. Even more experimental rules and not tested at all: Morale

Morale tests only apply to squads, and are taken at the beginning of the round after they reach below 50% size. It is taken again at the beginning of each round after the round they take casualties.

To check morale, take the highest point cost figure in the squad and roll a d20. If it is equal or less than the point value, the unit passes morale. A roll of 1 is still an automatic failure, so it is possible, but very unlikely, for high point value units to fail.

“Stand fast!” – a named character’s point value may be used for the morale roll of any squad where over 50% of its units are within 6” of the character.

Morale save success: Squad may activate normally and does not need to make a save again unless it takes more casualties.

Morale save failure: When this squad activates, it must make an immediate full speed move straight towards the friendly starting zone. It may not make any attacks. In the next round, it must make another morale save if it is still on the battlefield.

The unit may deviate its movement slightly to avoid an enemy unit in its path. If this unit’s maximum move forces it to end in contact with an enemy character squad or unit, it is destroyed immediately.

During this move, they will pass through friendly units with no restriction. However any friendly squad that this fleeing unit passes within 1” must also make a morale save at its activation (if it has not activated this round), or the beginning of the next round.

Morale save modifiers:
Named characters with point values over 20 within 6” (when a unit is not subject to “Stand Fast”): -4 bonus to save roll
Squad is at 25% size or less: +4 penalty to roll

=====================

Comments/critiques welcome.
Thread: Re: Snowspeeders

This is a bit of a delayed response...

Personally I've been posting here, even though the wizards site does have a very good and healty/active forum, the topics there are a bit more specific to only the most competitive teams and meta, and the most current sets. I decided to keep my posts here as there are few fan sites outside of the wizards forums that actually has maintained itself throughout the years, if any (please let me know if you know of any beyond the holocron).

Anyhow, to the topic at hand -- definitely the snowspeeders are a bit underpowered even in the normal game. They treated them almost as if they were "creatures" and not fast vehicles. They should definitely have a much higher defense if not only for their speed.

Although, I don't recall the movie that well, but weren't they quite fragile to AT-AT fire? I thought only Luke and a Wedge's speeders survived?
