Yes, the Skorzeny effort and the Heydte parachute drop seem to show up in all the games, though they had little or no practical effect on the battle at all, in terms of actually fighting the enemy. Their value lay in the confusion they sowed - Skorzeny's reputation definitely preceded him in this case - as everyone was running around looking for the commandos sent to assassinate Eisenhower. The hopelessly scattered para drop made the unit completely combat ineffective, but apparently the Americans thought the Germans had dropped an entire division into the middle of things.

Yes, those OOC units could be brought under command by an Army HQ, but could not be ordered to attack or do exploitation movement - they can be ordered to do strategic or tactical movement, presumably back into the command range of a corps HQ. This is as it should be, especially in the beginning of the game to reflect the chaotic US response on the part of some units.

I assumed so, it's just using the "historical" set-up by Chris Fawcett some of the Yanks set up OOC. But they can always use the army command.

Hi Darrell,

Yes, most Bulge games do have special rules for Skorzeny and Peiper and the Von der Heydte parachute battalion and what Eisenhower had for breakfast on the 17th, etc. etc. ... not my game.

I felt that at this level of study, a lot of these chromy bits would simply come out in the wash. Peiper was not the whole of the 1st SS Panzer, and Panzer Brigade 150 did not contain any Shermans at all - here's a short account of what happened to the brigade (as a note to how it was implemented in another Bulge game): http://www.avalanchepress.com/150thPanzer.php.

However, just because I didn't put something in doesn't mean that you can't either. Have fun with it!
Hi Darrell,
Your original assumption is correct:
5 "tactical movement" MF to trace to a corps HQ (but you ignore rivers);
10 "tactical movement" MF for a corps HQ to trace to an army HQ (and only along roads).

The strategic movement rules are meant to be only for the faster movement of units themselves.

Thread: Peiper variant

Most Bulge games have a special rule for Kampfgruppe Peiper and Skorzeny's commandos.

On the first turn of the game, the 1st SS Panzer unit may only be given exploit move orders. When it moves, it may use strat movement regardless of whether it moves adjacent to an enemy unit. It must use road movement however.

Panzer brigade 150 may use the following special rule: for a single activation, which must occur during the first 2 turns, this brigade may ignore all US units on the map while moving (ie. it may move through enemy counters and may use start movement without regard to enemy units).
150 Bde may not end it's move in an enemy occupied hex, and may not attack during that activation. This move may be a regular or expoit move.
Note: the unit must still obey all road restrictions due to German units.

Thread: supply / command trace

Units must trace a LOC/LOS of up to 5 MF to their corps HQ to be in command. Can they use the strat move rate (1/2 mf/road hex) for this trace if they do not trace adjacent to an enemy unit at any point?

I assume not (as it doesn't say either way) but there could be a positive argument for it (supply tends to travel along roads).

ltmurnau wrote:
Sure the game would still be playable. The reverse side of the unit counters have a colored dot indicating whether they are Allied or German, that's all. Nice! However, because they are 1/2" counters, with hexes to match, you might find it difficult to locate a source of 1/2" wooden blocks. Why not use some thick cardboard or Bristol board?
I think it would look cooler.

I've heard the game is decent but the components are flimsy.

Would the game still be playable if you mounted the counters on blocks? Not necessarily for fog of war but for making the counters look better.

Thanks.
