Thread: Session Report

All 24 cards are dealt out. The dealer then roles the 8 dice. The images on the dice match the images on the card, though the differences between the images are slight. The aim is to find a dice that is showing a match with one of your cards. This matching pair is then passed to one of your neighbours, they then check that the two do match if so they get to keep the card and re-roll the dice. If they don’t match then they are returned along with any card of the neighbours choice. Players have 1 minute to attempt to get rid of as many cards as possible. Whoever manages to get rid of the most cards over a number of rounds wins.

The game is played at such a frantic pace that I couldn't start to tell you what happened, other then Oggie and Tel managed to get rid of a few cards in the first couple of rounds, this was followed by a few rounds of stalemate. In the final round Tel and Oggie were the only players not to get rid of cards. Oggie claimed victory due to his strong start with Tel holding on for second. Paul brought up the rear.

This is an extremely light game that is ideal as a bit of relief between heavier games but don’t expect too much in the way of subtlety or strategy.

Final Scores
Oggie 5, Tel 4, Steve 3, Andy 3, Paul 2

Ratings / 10
Oggie 6, Tel 6, Steve 7, Andy 7, Paul 7

Thread: Session Report

Played this the night before. Its a shocker. 24 cards with 12 different pumpkin faces, differentiated by types and colours of mouth, eyes and stem. Divide the cards out evenly. Start the 1 minute timer. Roll 8 or so dice which have the 12 different faces spread among them. All the players peruse the dice. If there's a dice with a pumpkin face up that matches a card you have, claim the dice, put it on the matching card and pass it to the player on your left. If you receive such a card, you check that it is a match, and if so you can re-roll that dice. After 1 minute, you all stop. If you have less cards than you started with, get a candy card for each you've lost. If you have more, lose a candy card for each you've gained, but only if you have candy cards won from previous rounds. Play a number of rounds equal to the number of players.

Problems?

1. Squinching your eyes up to see detailed little pumpkins on the dice and matching them up against cards (where the differences in eyes / mouth / stem are not very much)

2. Why go to the lead from the start? Better to get a lot of cards (you lose nothing as you've gained no candy yet) and then you have far more chance of getting matches at the end. Players who get matches early have fewer chances to get matches later, and so will lose their candy. If everyone follows this strategy, no one will claim anything

3. For a light 20 minute party game, there' s no interaction, no fun, no tactics, no thought, no strategy. Strike 5.

Here's hoping we didn't get the rules wrong, but pretty much regardless, I give it a rating after 1 play of 1 for 'defies description of a game, you won't catch me dead playing this'.
Thread: Session Report

Players: Steph, Nicki, Rebecca, Garry

Auf Achse was still nowhere near ending, so Nicki and Steph introduced us to Trick R Treat. After the rules had been explained, Catherine decided she just wanted to watch this one. I should have made the same decision as it turned out to be my least favourite reaction game ever.

The basic idea is that you have a hand of five or six cards. These display pumpkins with different shaped eyes, mouths and stalks. Several dice are rolled which also show pumpkins. Match your card with a die and pass card and die to the player next to you. Providing you have correctly matched the two, the recipient adds the card to their hand and rerolls the die. If not, both are returned to you together with an extra card from the checking player. Once a minute of this has passed, a player can declare the round over, and you gain or lose money depending on whether you have less or more cards than you started with. This same process is followed over several rounds of play.

The girls were very good at it, but I just could not make out the pumpkin shapes on the dice very easily at all. As soon as I had managed to work out a die that matched my card, I had already had three or four passed my way. Then, while I checked these and rerolled the dice, another few landed in my direction. Absolutely horrible.

Result: Rebecca, Steph, Nicki, Garry (surprise, surprise!)
If I remember rightly, in each round all cards are shuffled and dealt out equally i.e. you start with the same number of cards, so what you do on previous rounds has no consequence.

This is a fun game to play with kids. Unfortunately, there is a degenerate strategy that is rather tempting to use...deliberate do badly during the first or second round, in order to score lots of points on the second round. This strategy rather takes the bloom off the game for me.
