John,

You have at least one friend now.
I picked up a copy of this at a Thrift Shop years ago....
...Until now I never knew what the "one rule" to the game was and could never play it.

Thanks!

Thread: Re: The one rule game which isn't really much fun

Friendless wrote:
In theory, this is a great game, but I find it doesn't work very well. The arrangement of the colours on the tiles encourages chains to terminate, so you never see someone scoring 38 points in a move. In fact, almost all moves score between 12 and 16. Also, because you draw tiles randomly, with no chance to plan, all you have to do is find a good place to put that tile down. Once you're half-decent at doing that, you can play optimally, and the game becomes pure luck. It's just not very interesting.

I beg to differ. I scored 38 in a single turn in my last game and my opponent went further with 41.

Part of the strategy in the game, though, is ensuring that you don't leave that kind of scoring oportunity for the next person if you can help it.

Thread: The one rule game which isn't really much fun

We bought this game at the Stuart Landsborough Puzzling World in Wanaka, New Zealand, when we were on our big international holiday to see the snow. My son was 7 at the time, easily fitting into the 5-105 age range. I was intrigued by the idea of a one rule game.

Continuo is a tile laying game. You start with a stack of 42 tiles, each of which looks something like this:

Each player draws the top tile of the draw pile, and places it next to one or more existing tiles to make the longest chain of the same colour possible. For example, I would do this:

I would score 6 points, because the only chain I created across multiple tiles had 3 parts on one tile and 3 on the other. I might then play:

where I am just using the as a spacer. That move would score me 15 points. There are actually 4 different colours available in the game, but I am all exampled out now.

As for its physical aspects, the game is quite sturdy and nicely packaged. The tiles won't survive thousands of plays, but the game won't get thousands of plays anyway :-).

In summary, I was disappointed with this game. My 7yo son was able to play it, but he wasn't very interested. Neither was I, so it went into the suitcase to be rediscovered at home in Australia. If you go to New Zealand, be sure to drop in at Puzzling World. However, spend your money on the maze, and don't worry too much about Continuo.

Shuffle the deck and place it face down. Turn over one card and place it in the centre of the table. Each player in turn takes a card from the draw pile and places it so it touches at least one other card on a side. You get one point for each square in chains of squares of the same colour with squares on the new tile and on the old tiles.

For example, say this tile is on the board:

and you add a tile to make this:

you get 2 points for the yellow and 6 points for the blue for a total of 8.

Keep a running total. Person with the highest score when all cards have been placed is the winner.

We used to enjoy playing this game. It was misplaced for years and recently found. Unfortunately, I have lost the original rules and would appreciate seeing them posted on this site.

I don't have the original game, but the Rhombo Continuo variant. AFAIK, the rules are exactly the same, the only difference is the shape of the tiles:

One player:
Take the top tile and place it on the center of the table. Take the next tile and place it touching (but not overlapping) this tile, matching as many chains of the same color as possible between both tiles. (Tiles MAY be offset from each other when placed.) Add up the number of squares in all of the chains formed/extended by adding this new tile. (Chains MUST be on two or more tiles to count.)

Continue by drawing another tile and scoring until all of the tiles are played.

Two Player: Take the top 2 tiles to start and arrange them so that a maximum score would be obtained. No one scores for this. Players then take turns adding tiles and scoring individually for them.

Four player: Like 2 players except start with 4 starter tiles.

3 Player/5 Player: Like 2 Players, except start with 3 starter tiles.

(There are 48 tiles in Rhombo Continuo. The above rules ensure each player has an equal number of turns. If Continuo has the same number of tiles, these number should work as well.)
