Thread: Missions and Quests for The Sorcerer's Cave Game

Below are some Missions and Quests I created for the Sorcerer's Quest game to add a bit more variety.

The Missions where written on the blank cards I got with the game and shuffled into the other cards. When found they where read by the relevant player and kept face down till completed.

Missions -

Befriend a Unicorn +15pts.

Find the Magic Sword and kill a Spectre +25pts.

Kill a Giant +10pts.

Carry the Eye of God to the Tomb of the Kings +15pts.

Carry the Lost Ruby to the Centre of the Viper Pit +30pts.

Reach the Fith level +20pts.

The Quests where written on pieces of papaer which where turn face down and the start of each game and each player randomly took one to complete.

Quests -

Carrying Talisman to the island in the Deep Pool +30pts.

Carrying Magic Staff to the Great Hall +10pts.

Find the Magic Flute and put a Dragon to sleep +15pts

Slay a Dragon. +20pts

Destroy the Sorcerer +40pts.

Hope you like them, feel free to change them around.

My nephew is a similar age and has recently got into this having come across it at my mum's. It is a nice exploration game for kids (and I still like it better than some new games).

p.s. I think we created a dynamite card, which allowed you to bring down the tunnel behind you, plus a card that allowed you to clear it (and the earthquake). It was nearly 30 years ago so I don' remember very clearly

I agree that it's much more likely that there are an even number of cards and that I'm missing one. I'd be very interested in knowing what I'm missing. My set consists of the following:

8 blank cards
3 Dwarf
3 Woman
6 Man
3 Priest
1 Woman Hero
3 Troll
1 Unicorn
3 Ogre
1 Spectre
1 Hero
3 Dragon
3 Giant
3 Wizard
1 The Scorcerer
1 Sibyl
1 Ghouls
1 Medusa
6 Silver
6 Gold
3 Gems
1 Treasure Chest
1 Eye of God
1 Strength Potion
1 Charmed Flute
1 Magic Carpet
1 The Lost Ruby
1 The Ring
1 Magic Sword
1 Magic Staff
1 Healing Balm
1 Lotus Dust
1 Talisman
2 Earthquake
2 Trap
1 Mutiny

If anything I'd suspect that I'm supposed to have 2 Mutiny. Hope this helps.

Thread: Re: Components Count

To clarify, I'm trying to separate my expansion from the base game and also check to see if my base game is complete. The four hazards from the expansion are all accounted for. I have pulled all 29 of the cards listed in the expansion rulebook inventory from the base game but I can't figure out what the 30th card is (since its not listed) and I don't have an inventory for the base game (other than the OP's list above). Lastly, I have 72 cards total for the base game meaning the above list may be incomplete (not to mention the 8 blanks).

Thread: Re: Components Count

Hmmm. . .I have 72 cards plus 8 blank cards (plus an additional 30 from the expansion) for a total of 110. So perhaps the base game came with 80 cards total?

My own dilemma stems from the expansion. The inventory in the expansion rulebook states 30 cards but only lists 29 cards. It appears that the card missing from the expansion list is a Dwarf (the expansion cards are a very slight different shade). I would ask how many Dwarves you have in your base game?

My point is that the tiles are larger than they need to be. Like I said, reducing the size of the tiles may not necessarily reduce the requirements of the playing surface, but it will make things more manageable.

Thread: First Session with a six year old

I just got this game from Ebay, got it almost on a lark, as I knew nothing about it.

What I got:

60 Large Area Cards
72 Small Adventure Cards + 8 Blank Adventure Cards
12 page Rulebook
4 Party Tokens in 4 colours
Level Markers in 4 colours
1 six sided die

After reading thru the rules once. I'd decided to test it out in solo play before I got the kids to join. I chose the Woman Hero/Dwarf combo and was starting out when Cesar saw me laying the thing out and asked to join. I let him have that combo and chose a Wizard/Woman combo for myself.

Cesar's party split from mine as he only was exploring mainly the first level. For some reason he did not want to go down stairs until he got trapped and going down was his only option. He got lots of strangers to join him so he had plenty of muscle power. Pretty soon he was loaded with treasure, dumping silver so he could carry gems, etc.
Also, he got a unicorn to join him, and he got the sleeping powder so he took a dragon's treasure without much bother.

On the other hand I was kinda reckless, I kept going down before bothering to get enough additional manpower. I got trapped by an Earthquake and my companions mutinied on me leaving my Wizard pretty much alone. I gained some companions but I took a chance and lost them in the viper pit. After a bunch of dead ends I had to return via the same viper pit and managed to go thru, even though I was alone and carrying no treasure. I did manage to slay a dragon.

I encountered the Sorcerer, and barely escaped, as there was no way for me to fight him out.
After a short while we finished the floor tiles and there was nothing else to do but exit the cave. I barely made it (with no treasure,) my trophies being only those fiends I had managed to slay.
Cesar made it out fully loaded with treasure and magic talismans and a huge throng of recruits.

All in all a fun first session. We made some mistakes during play, because I didn't go thru the rules again, but it didn't impede our play in any way.

I need to do something with the blank cards. Maybe someone out there arleady has something that works. For now the basic game will work for us.

The game plays almost as a combination of Caves & Claws and Classic Dungeon.

This could be easily re-fashioned with smaller tiles so that it becomes more practical, those tiles are huge, (even though you may still end up playing on the floor.)

I just got it for $16.00 with s/h. I believe it is complete, but it is hard to say, because there is no inventory.
The tiles are age buckled, and one of the small cards has a fold, but overall it looks very lightly played.

We played it this weekend and the kids liked it very much. They have played Classic Dungeon and Caves & Claws, and this game seems like the natural progression from them.

Later:

Based on this photo it looks as if it did come with additional bits which I did not get. But the cards seem complete. Can someone give me a card and tile count?

Just finished a game with my 4 year old daughter. We play this in solo mode, me "running" the game and her making decisions for the exploring party. She opted for her usual woman hero & dwarf starting team, and was doing OK until she slammed into the Sorcerer on level 2.

The evil archmage's magical blasts made short work of our heroine's dwarven companion. That really irritated her, and she turned to me and vowed "I'm gonna get this guy!" Retreating from the room, she stormed through the dungeon killing everything she met -- dragons, giants, you name it. Except for women, all of whom she befriended (hot dice!). Eventually she returned to the Sorcerer's lair wielding a magic sword, followed by three fellow lady-warriors and a unicorn. They kicked his sorry necromantic ass around the block, covered with holy water and magic dust, suffering no casualties in the process.

I can't wait until she's old enough for Arkham Horror...

Thread: Re: conexions between same level

Insted of just bulding the cave randomly, I usually create a grid that is finite in size based upon how large I want the "cave" to be. I also use my wallet sized versions of the cave tiles which really helps with the space problems.

Yes I believe both staircases would lead down to the same level but there may not necessarily be a path connecting them together. You have to place the tiles on the new level so that they have the same number of "spaces" between them as the staircases on the original level, and then explore the "spaces" in between with your adventuring party to see if they connect or not. So if your original level is a row of 5 tiles (A1-5 say) with downward staircases on spaces 1 and 5, you would place the tiles for the next level (let's call it level B) on spaces B1 and B5. Spaces B2-B4 would need to be explored as usual.

This is one of the main reasons you need to play this game on the living room floor and not your game table But it's also one of the cool aspects of Sorcerer's Cave.

Hi, all.
i bought a mint copy on ebay 3 years ago, and i started to read about the game just now. It seems there are many fans for this game.

I have a question, which maybe some of the expert players can help me:

Lets say i open a level down using staircase A, so creating another area for this level (-1A).
Later in the game another player or myself, again playing from the initial level use a different staircase down B, so creating another separate area (-1B).

(like 2 legs of the same chair)

Are those two areas both one level down conected between them?
if yes, how?

thanks a lot and happy games!!
fer
sk

Thread: General Comment

This was the all time favourite game of my childhood!

The central concept of the game was the modular board. As you placed the map tiles, there was a real feeling of exploration. You never knew what was coming next.

As we played it, the game basically never ended. You just keep going down the levels, building up more allies and weapons. It was like a simplified version of D+D in it's open-endedness.

Part of the enjoyment for a kid is embelishing the game events with story lines.

Thanks to Terrence Donnelly designing the game that provided me with hours of great fun. Fantastic stuff.

(btw: My starting team was always the heroine with the dwarf)

Apparently you can still buy this game at: http://www.fantasygamesunlimited.com.
