Use the remaining "blank tiles" along with the "item tiles" to randomly fill in the interior spaces. Just remember to set aside one such "blank tile" for the first move of the game.

sontikka wrote:
Hi! I think that i cannot understand your variant's board set-up. Could someone post an image about it? I have some tiles glued on the board, does it matter?
My intention was to create the same kind of board setup as Master Labyrinth. In that game, the magic items are tokens which are placed on top of the maze tiles. At the start of the game, these tokens are not placed on any tile which is on the perimeter of the board.

In aMAZEing Labyrinth, the tiles have pictures of the magic items pre-printed on them. Don't place any of these tiles (the ones with the item pictures) on the perimeter of the board. Additionally, save one of these tiles (without the item pictures) to be the first one inserted into the maze with the first player's move.

I conceived of this variant while visiting relatives of mine who own aMAZEing Labyrinth. I own Master Labyrinth, so I can't generate a picture for you. Perhaps someone else can.

My family and I have been playing this variant for a couple of days now. We are enjoying this set of rules even more than the standard. It seems to add an element of excitement and sense of urgency. Getting the most treasures vs finishing first seems to keep everyone involved in the game. To solve the downtime we have been using our sand timer. This game has been a big hit at my house since I picked it up at local GW store recently. We also stick with the random set up and adjust the number of treasures to shorten or lengthen playing times. Overall this game with the house rules has been a very pleasant surprise.

I thought this game looked interesting when I first found it, until I brought it to my parents' house to play this weekend. That's when I fell in love with it! This is just an all-around fun game that manages to be competitive while not leaving anyone feeling upset they didn't win (at least in my world).

Nice report. This is one of my favorite games. It's in my top 10.

We played a game of Leonardo Da Vinci last night when all of us where overtired. Not a good idea. The game lasted way to long because people took so long to make decisions. We even forgot to advance the turn token once or twice. Who was keeping track.

Sometimes a game can perk us up and sometimes we just need to go to bed. Last night it was the latter. Gaming under the influence, of any kind (including the need for sleep) is just not a good idea. We did enjoy each others company so not all was lost.

Thanks for that. I've posted to a few threads here, but was quite nervous at posting my first review. Going into the game, I thought it would be ok. I couldn't believe how much I actually enjoyed it once we started playing, though! I definitely consider this game a good time, and IMHO, it's the perfect game when you don't have time to play something heavy, but still want to feel like luck didn't play a major part in victory.

Great review. You basically summed up what I've felt since first playing this game. Easy to learn - difficult to master. Lots of potential for indirect player interaction.

Well done!

Thread: Oh, No!! 7-year Old Plays Under the Influence!

Introduction
This was the 3rd game of aMAZEing Labyrinth for our family. The players were: our 7-year old daughter who will be referred to as “D” for the remainder of the session report, Mystery Bob, and myself (i.e., Mrs.). Since D was still fighting a cold, I gave her a dose of a previously untried nighttime cold medicine before our game.

Gameplay
We let D play with the children’s variant whereby she could scrutinize her 8 treasure cards, traverse the maze, and pick up her treasures in any order.

Thanks to EndersGame

Mystery Bob and I utilized the regular rules where we sought one treasure at a time. D started off strong and picked up her first two treasures right away. Mystery Bob and I were having trouble and each managed our first treasure by the time that D had found her fourth.

After acquiring my first treasure, I was able to pick up the next 3 rather quickly. Then Mystery Bob was on a roll and found another 4 treasures. At this point, D found her eighth treasure and only had to return to her starting point to win. Mystery Bob continued to find more treasures while I again began encountering some difficulties.

Then, it happened, D had the winning move in her hand but placed the maze card in the wrong way!!! At this point, the effects of the cold medicine were starting to show and she didn’t seem to care that she could have won and finished the game. Her eyes were actually beginning to glaze over a little.

Thanks to frogmind

Poor D, she kept blocking herself in closed corridors—over and over. After a few more turns of this, Mystery Bob found his eighth treasure. I still had 2 more to go, so the race was on between Mystery Bob and D for the win!!

Endgame and Scoring
As I managed my seventh treasure, Mystery Bob pulled out the win!! D won in her next turn and happily went to bed. I finished last (again, sigh!)

Conclusion
This is a very enjoyable game that challenges your ability to adjust your plans and foresee possible alternatives. Strategy is important and you can set up your moves somewhat, however you need to be able to react to the changes your opponents make to the maze in order to be successful. I find that the maze becomes more manageable as the game progresses and everyone begins linking the corridors to find their treasures. I believe that next time we will try the regular rules for D as well; she is pretty good at figuring out how to move the maze--when she is not medicated.

Ratings out of 10
Mystery Bob: 6.8
Me: 6.5
D: 7

Important Endnote
Nighttime cold medicine should not be given before a game. D seemed like she was truly lost inside of a maze by the end of the game!
Thread: Introducing a new game to the parents

Intro

My fiancee and I headed over to my parents' house for supper on Friday night. It was a great meal, followed by relaxation in the hot tub. After all of that, I asked if my parents wanted to try a game I picked up at the Park Point Rummage sales (a huge yearly rummage sale here in Duluth Minnesota). They said sure, but my fiancee decided to sit out and just watch/kibitz with my mom.

The reason I chose this game to try is because of my mother. She enjoys games that are simple to figure out, but she has trouble understanding things that get too complicated, due to an accident she had as a little girl. Anyway, now that I have the time, I thought I would try my hand at my first review based on that playing of the game.

Theme and Audience
There isn't much to the theme of this game. The items you have to pick up in order to win range from ghosts to bugs to pieces of armor. If anything, I suppose the theme would be that it's "cute," which is more than fine by me. In regards to audience, based on the art design of the game, it is obviously geared towards younger children. The ghosts aren't remotely scary, many of the pictures have a "cartoony" feel to them. A note here, while the intended audience is obviously children, don't let that influence whether or not you will give this game a try. Once you actually sit down to play it, you will find yourself racking your brain when your turn comes around.

Basic Info
Number of Players--2-4
Difficulty/Time to learn--None/a few minutes.
Time to play--Depends on starting layout but probably 30-60 minutes
Theme--Not much of one, although technically fantasy I suppose as most of the items to be collected seem to fall in that vein.
Mechanics--Modular, constantly shifting board; player movement
Strategy/Luck--These occur at two different times in the game. The inital placement of the pieces is pure luck as the board is randomly built, and then your cards indicating what you need to pick up are dealt to you. Once the game actually starts, however, it is almost entirely strategy.

Components
Playing Pieces--There are four wooden playing pieces colored red, blue, yellow, and green. They are well made, but art-wise no better than pawns in a game of trouble. Just small, solid, wooden cylinders.

Board--Is well-made for a childrens game. It's your standard board that folds in half, with several pieces of the map permanently affixed. Nothing terribly exciting here.

Map Tiles--The art on these are very well-done as far as I'm concerned. Each piece has a piece of the labyrinth on it. The walls are made of bricks in various shades of red, and not just one solid color. Each of the items that appears on the tiles is done in a cute cartoony manner, while still managing to make you feel perfectly ok playing the game without any kids around.

Cards--These are small cards. For anyone familiar with Arkham Horror, they are about the size of the item cards from that game, but not quite as sturdily made. Definitely still ok. The only concern in regards to children is that they are small and may easily be lost.

Rulebook

There really isn't anything to say about the rule book. It's small, four pages long, and extremely simple to understand.

Set-Up

Set-up only takes a couple of minutes, as it only consists of placing the map tiles and dealing out all of the cards. Once that is done, play is ready to begin.

Gameplay

This is where things can get confusing from reading the rulebook to actually playing the game. When I read the rules, I thought it would be a simple, quick, somewhat thoughtless game. I was right for two out of the three. This game is extremely easy to play and understand. So simple that I'll list out the basic rules here.

1.There is one extra map tile once the board has been built. On each players turn, they must slide the extra map tile onto the board anywhere that the board allows.
2.The player whose just placed the tile then moves their piece towards the first item on their list. There is no movement restriction other than that you can't go through walls. If there's a path, you can get there.
3.Once that player finished movement, the next player takes the map tile that was pushed off the board and uses THAT tile somewhere on the board.
4.Once a player has gone through and collected their entire deck of items, they must return to where they started to win the game.

That's it, those are pretty much the rules. There is one other side-rule that states that if a player is on the tile that is pushed off the board, they reappear on the other end of the board where the new tile was placed (think Pac Man).

In reading the rulebook, one might think "That's it? This definitely is a kid's game." That was my first reaction as well, until I sat down to play it on Friday. One you start playing it, you find that strategy abounds. If you can't get to the item you need on your turn no matter where you slide in the new tile, you have to weigh giving you a slightly closer ending point with that new tile against using that tile to mess up another player getting their item (or what you suspect is your item, as no one knows what each player is going after for sure until it has been collected). On top of this, the being pushed off the side and coming back on the other side also adds to the strategy. We found ourselves sitting and staring at the board, usually for a couple minutes, when our turn came around, trying to figure out what the perfect move was. A couple of times during the game, I felt like I was playing chess. This, to me, is definitely a "easy to learn, more difficult to master" type of a game. As stated earlier, other than during setup, there isn't a whole lot of random to the game. Once the game actually starts, every move is strategic.

My Rating
These will all be rated out of 10.

Components--Playing pieces:5 (gets the job done, nothing fancy)
Board/Map Tiles:9
Cards:7

Average: 7
Luck--2
Strategy--9
Fun Factor--9.5
Gameplay--10
Theme--5
Replay Value--9

Overall--9.5 (Note, this is not an average of the above scores, as I personally place less importance on several of the issues I rated than on others. This is just overall how much I enjoyed this game).

Conclusion
If anyone is looking to play an extremely easy-to learn, fun-to-play, light-hearted game that still requires strategy to become truly good at, I would recommend this game. And due to the simplicity of the rules, it could definitely be an amazing gateway game to introduce to non-gamers.

Well, that's it for my first review! I hope it wasn't too terrible, and if there's anything I should have touched on, or was confusing, please let me know so that I can improve on my next. Thanks for reading and game on!

I keep thinking it might be improved for any number of players by placing a couple of monster figures randomly on the board, whenever that monster gets linked up to a players piece, the player goes back to their start square and the monster is moved.

I'm thinking that the only metric your going to be able to judge one win against another with, would be based on the number of turns you take to win. Do you have any other ideas, I'd like to hear 'em.

Thanks! that is good idea to keep under my sleeve:

a-It can come handy either to play with younger kids as you said (let them to be the only ones who can use it),

b- it can also come handy to come out from some sticky situations, where a player has fall behind many turns trying to reach one particular treasure. I know that is against all the rules, but I have played many games with young kids where a player is swallowed by frustration using turn after turn to try to reach a particular treasure without success. Usually what I did was to allow him/her to open an additional card.

Please, bear in mind, that i am not talking about serious games with serious players in here. Just playing Lab with young kids to all have a good time.

Happy games! and Happy NYear 2008!

Fer
SKorea

Thread: Re: Turn ANY one tile instead of moving a whole row?

I have not tried it, although I will leap to the conclusion that it will vastly simplify the game, and remove two aspects of strategy:

1. Snookering someone as they gain a lead will be impossible while still improving your position -- something that becomes important as you become more experienced with the game.

2. Complete removal of the teleport feature, which can be key to getting out of a jam. It is possible to get yourself quite stuck on one part of the board and the teleportation is often the most effective way to clear the clog.

I also think it will be more limiting to the player as they can only clear one hurdle at a time. Moving a row often creates pretty remarkable opportunities to change your piece's reach. In short I think the change will make the game simpler, and less interesting.

My seven-year-old is quite adept at reading how the maze will be affected by a tile insertion, so don't be too quick to underestimate your eleven-year-olds. If you are still unsure, play-test with real opponents as you will get a better feel for the game. It is one of my few titles that is popular with my wife, who often spits after saying the word "boardgame."

This is a good game as-is. Try the rules as they stand first, and then propose the variant if the kids are losing interest.

             Sag.

I just bought Amaze-ing Labyrinth and hope to teach some 11 year-olds on a game day. After test playing myself a couple games it seems to me that it might be more fun to have players turn ANY tile instead of shoving a row with a new tile. This would give the player more direct control over their route through the maze. Has anybody tried this, and, if so, did this make the game better or worse?

Thread: Question regarding priority of winning

OK, so here's the question:

Suppose you and your opponent are each down to your last card. You are positioned on the end of a row (edge of the board) and the off-board tile contains the object you need for the win. After placement of the off-board tile, your opponent will have to execute a move for the win. She places the off-board tile at the opposite end of the row in which you are presently situated such that your piece is ejected from the board. According to the rules, your piece is then moved to the newly placed tile which, as you recall, is the one you needed for the win. Who wins?

If your piece is moved immediately to the just placed tile (which contains your final objective), have you technically won the game even though it is not yet your turn? Your opponent must still move her piece for the win. Or, can you only win on your own turn?

Judd

Thank you for posting this variant - I had a play of it this evening. It definitely seems to add a lot more strategy to the game (which was very interesting), but due to the inherent increase in knowledge of everyone else's goals at all times, I would say that it did seem to take its toll on the playtime. Turns seemed a little slower, resulting in more downtime. I obviously can't say this would be the case for everyone playing this set of rules, but I just thought it worth mentioning for any groups containing players whose attention might wander as a result.

Thanks for posting this variant, Beowulf. I've played it several times over the past year, and it's much better than the published rules.

However, I changed the first two steps for a quicker setup:

1. Use the official setup -- shuffle the maze tiles and place them throughout the board, without restriction. The remaining tile may have an item pictured on it.

2. On the first turn, player one must insert the loose tile into the maze but cannot move his/her pawn. Turns proceed as normal with player two.

My understanding is that you can't push the extra card back the way it came from. We leave the extra card sit there as a reminder it can't be pushed back in that row until the next player decides where it will go. It can't be pushed back in that row regardless of which way you orientate it.

Good question. The rules specify that you can't place the card in the position it was pushed out of, but makes no reference to orientation.

I've always taken 'position' to mean the (x,y) coordinates, so pushing the row or column back would not be allowed even if you rotated the piece. Otherwise there's the chance of pushing the same row or column back and forth, rotating the pieces a quarter turn each time.

The rules say that "you may not immediately reverse the last player's move by returning the extra card to the position it was just pushed out of."

Does this permit the extra card to be rotated and then returned to the same location on the board (since that technically doesn't leave the board exactly as it was previously), or can the extra card not be put back into the same place regardless of its orientation?
I think I might have the '84 version! Wait, though...no, I think I'm still in the clear. I'm missing only one tile (although one's dog-eaten but "usable"), and so it's got to be the former.

Let's hope, anyhow.

Well, here I am posting again. Alas, I think Paul is quite busy, as he hasn't gotten back to me (or, he's run out of tiles).

I'm still in need of those two pieces. Anyone have any?

Thread: First Play(s) with Kids: 4 and 6

Picked up The aMAZEing Labyrinth game from a local toy store in S Cal (Geppetto's) on Friday. This was the only game in store that was on my wanted list. Seemed like it would be a good choice as my 4-year old daughter is good at puzzles, while my 6 year old son enjoys mazes.

Initial impression of the game quality was good. The tiles and board are strong and can withstand kid-play. Some minor anoyences: box is a bit oversized and pieces will fall out of their compartments if box is stored on it's side; the board does not completely lay flat when opened, which makes sliding the tiles a bit painful at times.

Both kids were very excited to play on Saturday morning. We started out by dealing 5 cards each, with each player's top card visible. Although my son is normally very competitive, he was happy to offer suggestions to my daughter. I also tried to be helpful in providing hints and suggestions to both kids. They both caught on faster than I expected.

After another few rounds of 5 cards, I left them to their own devices. I would estimate the game kept them entertained for another 30-45 minutes. While playing the game there were no major conflicts or fighting (i.e. nobody was crying at the end).

I played another round with my daughter on Sunday. We ended up playing co-operatively. We would flip a card, and she would decide if she wanted the item or not. I ended up with the spiders, snakes, and ghosts; she with the jewelry, butterflies, and treasure. By the end the board was amazingly open, with lots of long connecting paths.

All in all, The aMAZEing Labyrinth is great way to spend some time board gaming with the kids. For me it was much better than what we've been stuck with in the past (i.e. Trouble, Candy Land, and Pirates Life).

Thread: Where can I get replacement tiles?

I've bought this game twice at thrift stores, and neither time has it been complete. This time, one tile is missing, and another looks like the dog got to it.

Where can one get replacement tiles, if they even exits? Alternatively, how can I make a replacement on my own, to match the "feel" of the official ones?

Any and all suggestions are appreciated!

If you move over (and collect) a needed item, can you continue moving & pick the next reqired one up if it is on a valid route. Or does your turn end once you have discovered an item?

Thanks,
Rob.
