Thread: Changes in the Hip Pocket "Remix" Edition

I just recently bought the Hip Pocket version of this. I was hoping someone might be able to fill in a few details about the differences between the two versions. I don't think a new BGG entry is needed for the 2nd edition, but some comments for posterity would be helpful.

So far, as I know is that the original was black & white and supported 2 to 4 players. The new version is color, but only allows 2 players unless a second set is added. Although it sounds like the new version plays much better, it's a shame that the animal silouettes were removed from the scoring areas. I may have to find some stickers to add.

Would someone care to list the differences between the versions?

Yeah, the Safari Jack card is a teleport. I don't know what would make someone think otherwise.

I didn't think the SJ tile ended the game? Then again I haven't played in a long time but I'm sure that it was a cheap teleport tool or something...

Thread: Four Player Safari Jack Madness!

In order to play the four player version of Safari Jack, I purchased two extra sets of cards - so that I could shuffle them together and still have a two player set separately. After trying out the four player version I have to say that it was well worth the extra expense - it is a significantly different game with a new layer of strategy added due to the extra players involved. It is more fast moving as the map is created a lot faster, and the end caps seem to be even more fiercely defended...! An excellent variation on an already superb game.

Thread: Safari Jack Remix Comment

It seems that the Remix Edition has ironed out some of the problems with the original game, plus it's prettier and more pocket friendly. I have had countless two player games of Safari Jack Remix with various opponents, and have always enjoyed it immensely. Have just invested in two extra sets so that I can shuffle those together to make a four player deck whilst keeping my two player deck separate!

Thread: Session Report

Ash liked my Hip Pocket games and had asked about Safari Jack in the past, so it was sitting in my games bag. Ash needed to wait to get his copy of Mare Nostrum back, so I suggested Safari Jack (original non-HP edition). John joined in just as we were starting. I had played it once with my wife over a year ago, so I described the rules while scanning them. I managed to forget about proper game end/scoring issues until a couple moves into the game, which I believed caused some problems.

Mostly we headed off into different directions, giving a sort of multi-player solitaire effect. I tried to place things so that I could get them with a move card but other players (when nearby) would need to use a move-4. I forgot about the dangers of being bumped, however.... As suggested, we didn't have too much interaction. The game ended when ash got his 11th point. I didn't realize it was going to end the game, otherwise I would have played a bump card on him.

When I played with my wife we managed to extend each other's journeys by playing path cards (requiring end caps to be placed further away) and make good use of bump/jump cards. In a multiplayer game it seems like a viable strategy might be to hound another player while building up areas elsewhere. I was disappointed with how this session ran, but I think that we might manage some clever game play in the future. Currently the game is neck-in-neck with Light Speed for my least favourite Hip Pocket game.

Ash: 8
Michael: 4?
John: ?

Thread: User Review

The fun in this game lies in the theme, where the players are big game hunters trying to 'shoot' as many rare animals as they can. The shooting goes like this:

The players start from a base camp (which is a tile with four possible exits). The guide (Safari Jack) has vanished into the bush, and the players have to go looking for him. They do this by putting down a tile next to the base camp, then moving or scoring according to the value of the tile.

There are four different types of terrain, and each sports specific species that lives in those parts of the bush. In one direction from the base camp lies the river, in another lies the forest, etc. Animals living in the River has to be put down next to a river tile, and so on.

Typically, a player starts putting down tiles for one type of terrain and move onto this. If he's lucky, he draws animals matching his chosen terrain. Other players will normally pursue different paths in search for Safari Jack.

Eventually one player will draw the tile with S.J.'s picture, and thus ends the game. The player who has bagged the rarest animals wins.

In my view this game is about as light as its packaging. No disappointment there... :-) It rarely gets my attention these days, mostly because there's so many other fine games to be played.

Thread: Session Report

It’s a 20 minute, black and white Drakon, but where the tiles are terrain (jungle, caves, etc) and have no powers at all. It’s Draw a tile, Move, Place a tile - meaning if you place a scoring tile, everyone else has a move before you can move to it yourself and score it. And ‘score’ tiles score negative for you if you don’t place them by game end. So we mostly went our own ways. The first game ended so quickly we played a second - only to conclude that whoever gets the most ‘move x spaces’ and ‘jump’ tiles and least scoring tiles in their hands should win, so no need to bother playing again. A rating of 5.
