Thread: A 4 player game at last!

Well, tried out the game with 3 three of my friends, and it was a huge hit! Between the four of us, we've played well over 50 of the 'new'(Post Cataan) games, so we're not exactly 'n00bs,' but somehow this one hit a nerve and we found ourselves spending 2 hrs of our precious gaming night playing it three times, despite a pile of other games we'd brought along to play.

The first game was more of a learning curve for 2 players, new to the game, who started to understand the nice interplay of offense and defense, of greed and caution, that this game balances so nicely. The second game was an all-out war, with all of us doing what we could to force other players into giving us advantages, and that's where I feel this game shines: it's not so much maneuvering your own pieces, but playing to force your opponent into a situation where he has the choose (if you leave him a choice!) between the least of two evils.

By the time the last game was underway, we were having unbelievable fun. That's also when it occured to me that you could work out short term alliances, so that if I wasn't going to win, then at least neither of the 'perpendiculars' (coined the term, proud of it) would get the win either.

This game was extremely easy to learn, has a simple and fun mechanic, some good playing pieces, and can take very little time. I'm sure it might be prone to analysis paralysis, but this wasn't a problem with this group. It's now a 'must play' for the next time we game again.

P.S. You'd think that with owning the game and teaching it to them, they'd let me win at least one of those 3 games! Sheesh!

Thread: Pyramidis

Recently bought the game for $3 and was looking forward to playing it with my wife, who tends to dislike strategy intensive games. This one flies below her radar, being too fast and easy for veto, and she even won 2/3 games!

Game one was a learning curve, and we both soon realized that the rules were unclear about what to do with opponent pieces dropped on their 'finish' spot. Since the rules state that they go 'home' regardless of the owner ot the pile, we agreed to make it a shortcut home, and based on my ineptness in this regard, she won that one.

Game two I was more careful, trying to move so as to minimize the 'freebie' effect. It was very close, but I won.

Game three I got greedy. I left 4 pieces on my starting spot, hoping to force her to take them over. But by forming a tower, she could then 'jump' this stack and also freeze it in place at the cost of only one of her pieces. All 4 of my other pieces made it home quickly, but then I had no legal moves left and she could take her time winning. Note to self: never leave more than 3 pieces on the starting spot!

The rules were easy to learn and teach, the game was fast and fun. I'm sure that id I'd been playing with a 'deep thinker' kind of player, it could have dragged on much like a chess game can, but we kept it quick and light. The game was fun for two but I can see how it would really be great with four. Can't wait to try it out!

ThomasinNY

Thread: Session Report

I purchased Pyramidis a few years ago when I noticed it on a bottom shelf at a local game store. It was covered in dust and long forgotten. After haggling with the store owner (it obviously had been on the shelf for many years) I picked it up for less than $10.00 CAN.
The premise of the game is to move five of your eight "pyramids" to your home square. Every turn you select one stack to move. You may only move a stack if your pyramid color is at the top. The stack is picked up and moved forward one space. The bottom pyramid is then dropped off in that square. The process is repeated for every piece in the original stack. For example, if the stack had four pyramids the stack would be moved four spaces forward with one piece being dropped off every space. (i.e. Every time the stack moves another space the bottom pyramid piece is released.) Once your pieces have made it to the other side of the board (seven spaces)they move one space to the right and then begin their final journey home (see posted pictures).
I have played the game a few times and with four players the game is definitely more interesting as your pieces can branch to the left or right. Mike M. arrived at my place early so I co-erced him into a game.
The one question I have about this game is regarding a rule listed as follows: Opposing pyramids captured in a stack are all abandoned on the home square in their original order from the stack. I am not sure if the pieces then continue their move or stop on the home square. We play that the pieces continue their journey as normal. Another confusing rule is in regards to opposing players moving your pieces to thier home square. We play with a rule that if an opponent drops your piece in your home square it makes it, but only the bottom piece is home; all of the other pieces continue moving. If anyone can help clarify these points that would be great.
Mike and I played two games and we ended up splitting one game each. Again, I think I would enjoy this game more if I had a correct interpretation of the rules, or if they had better examples in the all-too-brief instructions. Or, more likely, it is just me...

Thread: General Comment

You can't play it with 3, and is rather unremarkable with 2. However, with 4 it is quite good, has fairly easy rules, is accessible to non-gamers, and passes the wife test.

Mayfair games has old ICE produced copies for 25$.
