I don't feel comfortable playing Samurai because it has little statues of Buddha.

Having read the whole thread over at Amun-Re, I offer the following observation, on the off-chance it might lessen that discomfort / enable you to enjoy the game:

To the best of my knowledge, Buddhism doesn't involve worshipping anything / anyone; deity-worship is neither required nor proscribed. (There might be specific branches which do? But not in general.) I'm positive it doesn't involve worshipping Buddha - he basically came up with a psychological/spiritual self-help program, and was called enlightened for it. Neither a prophet, nor divine.

All that being said, if you're not comfortable with it, you're not comfortable with it, and apologies for the bother.

Cheers!

[ED: Whoops - in a mad multiplicity of windows and distraction, I forgot that the source comment was on a post for a game other than Samurai. I probably should have taken this message to private mail, since it's not really on-topic for the post; many apologies. I'm leaving it up for now only so anyone who just got a comment notification won't wonder what it was.]

But there's nothing wrong with them, and by virtue of the fact that they're so wordy, every possible question you might have is covered thoroughly.

At least, I thought so.

You'll just have to mail some shops about the shipping costs they charge.

I buy most of my games in reallife shops, so I don't have a lot of experience with internet buys. These shops carry Medina for around 16€ at least:
http://users.pandora.be/adriaensen/ (Belgian shop carries a LOT of games, I'm preparing an order myself, ignore the crappy looking site, payment by international banking)
http://www.besteleenspel.nl (Dutch shop, site address meaning : orderagame, paypal possible)
(spel=dutch for game, like the german 'spiel', bordspel=dutch for boardgame, so you can google yourself)

(I don't know if these links are allowed, I'm in no way related to these shops, haven't even bought there yet)

A larger order for you/friends would be more economical I guess. Best and cheapest would be a friend visiting Europe bringing back a game of course...

GL.
yes, this may be done.

the rules state only one unfinished palace may be on the board at a time. but a palace that can no longer grow is technically finished. it may be claimed at a later time if desired, but does not have to be.

Thread: Question: Can a 5th palace of a color ever be started?

A rules question regarding a 4-player game -- If the fourth palace of a given color is unclaimed but complete (cannot be made larger), can a player start a new (5th) palace of that color? A player tried to do this last night when he was the only player needing a maroon palace and someone placed a single maroon piece where it could not grow. The player could ultmately get a larger maroon palace if he was allowed to start a new one elsewhere -- meaning the 1-piecer would never be claimed by anyone. Was starting a 5th maroon palace legal? (We voted no, but we weren't sure.)

Thanks.

Can a player claim a palace which is already finished (i.e. no further improvements are possible in any direction) but unclaimed?

Yup. And I know this point has confused players before. There may come a point where it is impossible to expand a palace of a color any further. At this point the palace is finished, but it may remain unclaimed, and a new palace of that color must begin with the next piece of that color that's played. But at any point anyone can decide to claim it if they haven't already claimed a palace of that color.

In some games I've played, near the end when the board is getting full, there are sometimes tiny one-block palaces of a color left unclaimed, and I usually have to claim them.

In a 3-4 player game you may claim any palace provided that:

- it isn't already claimed
- you haven't claimed a palace of the same colour yet

There may be more than one unclaimed palace of a given colour (at most one of which is possible to expand), in which case you can claim any of them subject to the above limitations.

Thread: Re: Question regarding The 2-player board

I have played the ofiical 2P variant once. It was my first game of Medina, actually. I liked it quite a bit, but my friend and then-most-often gaming partner didn't care for it with only two. Three is probably the best number, but I like it with four as well. The biggest problem is the right-left dependancy. If one person plays poorly, the person after them will reap all the benefits. Two-player eliminates this, but I'd really need to play again before knowing if I thought it was a great 2P game or not.

Thread: Re: Question regarding The 2-player board

I would presume not, as the 2P variants use an assortment of pieces similar to the amount used in a 3P or 4P game. I looked around briefly and also found no mention of how the reduced board is intended to be used. My assumption is that it is so two players can play a "straight" game without the variant rules. However, that still doesn't tell how many of each unit a player should start with.

I sent a GeekMail to the person who posted the file, and asked them to answer here. Hopefully they will.

The right side of this "modified" board is a printable addon to use with half the original board (folded) instead of the full board. It is not a variant in itself.

You can find it in the "Files" section for Medina.
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/browser.php?itemtype=file&gamei...
Hi Jeff,

I've suffered the same problem. You have to go to the link "DEFAUSSER DES PIECES" down the map, and vote to eliminate the brown palace pieces or whatever piece that you can't place. Then the other players will have to vote the same.

However the real problem with Ludagora version of Medina is that the rules are wrong, mostly because the french translation -Faidutti and others- (and the english too) is wrong.

You can read in the english rules: once only one player has pieces left to play he must play at least one dome per turn as long as he has any

And the real rule, in Stefan Dorra words is: If only one player has one or more domes (in the end of the game), he must play at least one dome per turn.

More about this "domes debate" in this thread:
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/71491
