SCOTTISH HIGHLAND WHISKY RACE: James, Mark, Eric, Berna, Phil, Steve

The Coronas were flowing, and Eric was keen to show off his new player aids (which are available on BGG), so we strapped on our kilts and got ready to tussle over some home-brew. I drew first blood, scheming my way past Eric grab the 6 malts (by way of my 2-step whisky), and then trading in my empty bottle for 5vp on my next turn. Unfortunately, it was all downhill for me after this. Steve and Mark bid the same amount of malt on each of the first three turns and couldn’t make much headway. James held back, conserving malts while waiting for the right opportunities to advance. I kept trying to get ahead of the English soldier, and wound up spending a whole lot of malt without anything to show for it. I did buy the +1 malt whisky, only to have James successfully battle me for it later in the same turn. My subsequent attempt to re-obtain the whisky on the next turn was stymied when we both revealed the same amount of malt. Mark, meanwhile, finally got out of Steve’s shadow, and pulled off a slick move when he used his 2-step whisky to go backwards and then sold a bottle for 5vp. He actually pulled this off one better later in the game, first landing on the refill bottle, then using his refilled 2-step to go backwards, and then sold his unfilled 2-step for 5vp. James, too, seemed adept at landing on the selling spaces, and wound up selling three bottles by game end. Everyone sold at least one bottle, except for Steve, who seemed content to hold his whisky and his malt (he got the 3vp bonus for finishing with the most malt). Eric surprised everyone late in the game by racing past the English soldier by bidding 16 malt! This put him on the end space, netting him 8vp. James finished in second and Berna was third. But the VP totals yielded different results: James edged Mark by a point! Final scores were: 19, 18, 15, 14, 10, and 9.

<samp>J: 3x5, 0x2, 0vp counters, 4vp finish = 19
M: 3x5, 0x2, 3vp counters, 0vp finish = 18
E: 1x5, 1x2, 0vp counters, 8vp finish = 15
B: 1x5, 3x2, 2vp counters, 1vp finish = 14
P: 1x5, 2x2, 1vp counters, 0vp finish = 10
S: 0x5, 3x2, 0vp counters, 3vp malt = 9</samp>

Several questions arose during the game. Eric posted these on BGG, and got a fairly quick response from the designer!

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geekforum.php3?action=viewthrea...
Thread: Re: Situations that aren't covered in the rules

Andreas, thanks for the clarifications! Just to follow up:

Mod-Games wrote:
3. The rule is: if there is more than one marker in the space you can activate only one of them. If you activate St. Culabans Feast you can use it to swap another marker in your space and activate this marker (if you alone and there is no other marker in the space).

So I can activate two markers on the same turn IF AND ONLY IF I land alone on a space that has only St. Culabans Feast and swap the Feast for another marker. Is this correct? In essence, the Feast becomes another marker, so it's as if I didn't activate it in the first place, right?

Other than this situation, though, I can't activate two markers on one turn. For example, a player in a recent game landed on Sacred Place, reactivated his Kinclaith, then moved back two spaces and sold the Kinclaith. I had missed the note at the end of Kinclaith that said this move was illegal, so I wanted to check whether two activations was possible at all.

Mod-Games wrote:
5. No, I think a translation mistake. You can use more than one whisky marker during his turn! Most whisky markers can only be used once per game.

I always thought the second sentence (on page 11) was the mistake, not the first (on page 8). It's good to know that players can use their whisky in any way possible, even if most can be used once per turn.

Thanks again for the response!

Hello

1. No tussle with the Englishmen.

2. Yes you may activate the marker - even if you stand at the end of the movement in the same area as in the beginning of the movement.

3. The rule is: if there is more than one marker in the space you can activate only one of them. If you activate St. Culabans Feast you can use it to swap another marker in your space and activate this marker (if you alone and there is no other marker in the space).

4. Yes

5. No I think a translation mistake. You can use more than one whisky marker during his turn! Most whisky markers can only be used once per game.

6. Yes he had to start behind him and end ahead of him. A player can not use these Whisky markers if he starts or ends in the same space as his "victim".

Hope this helps. Have fun with tha game.
Andreas

Thread: Situations that aren't covered in the rules

Andreas, I know you frequent the Geek, so I hope you can answer these questions. Our group decided answer as these situations arose, but I'd prefer to have official answers for future games.

1. Do players tussle with the Englishman, or not?

2. I am alone on a marker at the start of a turn. I choose one malt, but before I move that one malt is stolen because an opponent used the Benromach whisky. Now I will move zero spaces because I am spending zero malt and will stay on the same space. If I am still alone on this space, can I activate the marker? (The rules say, "If a player ends his movement by standing alone in a space..." Some people say I haven't moved, so I can't end my movement; others say that I did move zero spaces, then ended my movement in the same spot.)

3. You can buy or activate only one marker each turn, right? (This isn't spelled out anywhere, but I think it's impossible to do except through the use of Kinclaith, which does say you can't get two.) If you use St. Culabans Feast to swap the Feast with another marker, can you activate or purchase the new marker or not?

4. I believe all markers that are sold, discarded, or claimed (in the case of Malt Camp markers) are mixed into the reserve and can be drawn again immediately after the Englishman moves. Is this correct?

5. Just to clarify, a player can use only one whisky on his turn, correct? (The rules say only one on page 8, but "may use one or more" on page 11.)

6. Regarding Coleraine and Convalmore: To move past a player, do I need to start the turn behind him (that is, not in the same space) and end ahead of him (again, not in the same space)?

I really the enjoy the Race and would love to get these questions cleared up so that I can explain it better before the game begins rather than figure out answers (or have players vote on answers) in the middle of the game. Thanks!

I have one question about this game. If you use the Whiskey Marker "Convalmore" (you may swap a whiskey marker for another whiskey marker, used or unused, held bij another player) and you take an unused whiskey marker from another player, does that marker becomes active (unused) or does it stay inactive (used)?

Thanks in advance for helping me!

Thread: Re: typo

JamesT (#64677),

Whoops -- there's a potentially very confusing typo in my description of how movement works. Should read "If you are alone on a space, it costs 1 cube to move to the next space. But if you are on a space with one other person, it takes 2 cubes to move off. If you’re with 2 other people, it takes *3* cubes to move on, and so on."

Thread: User Review

I got to try this one last night. It’s a race game in which you’re trying to pick up whisky tiles and sell them at pubs along the race track.

The goal of the game is not to win the race but to get the most victory points (winning the race helps accomplish this goal since you get VPs for being 1st, 2nd, and 3rd). Along the race track there are various whiskey tiles you can pick up, along with tiles that represent pubs which will buy the whisky tiles from you (for VPs). There are also tiles that let you do other special actions.

The core mechanic is the blind bidding of brown “malt” cubes to determine movement. The person who bid the most cubes goes first, on down based on number of cubes bid. If two players tie in the bidding, they must negotiate for who goes first, and are allowed to offer cubes, whisky tiles, and I think even VPs as part of the negotiation. If they can’t agree, neither player moves, but both must still pay the cubes they bid (cutthroat players will soon realize there is a lot of room for extortion here).

The number of cubes you bid is also how many cubes you may use to move. Movement is interesting. If you are alone on a space, it costs 1 cube to move to the next space. But if you are on a space with one other person, it takes 2 cubes to move off. If you’re with 2 other people, it takes 3 cubes to move on, and so on. So if there are players ahead of you on the track and you want to move past them, you have to take that into account in your bid.

Much of the wacky fun of the game comes from the fact that players behind you can thwart you by bidding more than you, then moving past you so that the number of cubes you bid is no longer enough to get where you intended to go, since now you have to pay extra to pass them. For whatever number of cubes you bid, you must move as far as you can, so if you end up being off by one it means the differencing between landing on a tile or not.

Also, you can only pick up whisky, sell whiskey at the pubs, and use other special tiles if you are alone on the space that has the tile. If 2 people land on a tile, neither can use it. So out-guessing your opponents about where everyone’s going to go is the heart of the game.

The whisky tiles also can be used/drunk once to give you various special powers (such as move yourself or another player 2 spaces in either direction, or try to steal another person’s whisky or malt tiles).

Finally, there is a special token representing The Englishman. He moves 3 spaces per round and if he ever passes you when he moves, he taxes you for 1 malt cube per whisky tile that you have. A couple of the special tiles let you move the Englishman.

If The Englishman get to the end of the track before any of the players, then rather than getting victory points for being in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in the race, the players in the lead lose victory points for being closest to The Englishman.

We had fun with the game. I didn’t mind the blind bidding and the need to outguess opponents, but players who hate those mechanics are advised to stay away. My biggest criticism was the difficulty of remembering what all the special tiles did – they added a bit of a fiddly element to an otherwise light game. But I would definitely like to play again, and I may need to own this game just because of the theme
